i posted this in another thread, but that thread is now dead so ill post it here!!!

i think i figured out what "new brooklyn" really is!!! from reading some random book i found on a stoop of all places... it's based on a French sociologist named Pierre Bourdieu and his concept of "culture capital". - how cultural experiences acted as a boundary between the elites and the lower classes. The high prices of brooklyn real estate now are a prime example of culture capital. "The purpose of..." a house in brooklyn is not so much as it is housing and basic needs as it is a way of signifying one's membership in a certain class, an elite liberal with the indoctrination of high expectations, not hard actualities, "a smug belief in one's own entitlement."

i totally hate that but it rings true, no?

For some maybe. Not for all, not for me (especially not the "elite liberal" part ;) )

My family has owned in Brooklyn since my great grandparents came over around 1913. My grandmother's uncles brought them over and already owned property, a rooming house, in Brooklyn.

For me and my family it has nothing to do with class distinction, for us it's a way of life, the only life we've known for generations. For us it is exactly housing but it is also the family business, maintaining a tradition that began when my great grandparents working to provide a better life here in America.

I think a lot of people in Brooklyn are from a similar background, long time residents who own for no other reason than housing and tradition. It is the vocal elite liberal minority that you hear from, that has to read and talk about such concepts to feel better about their own liberal guilt.

Hi folks;

I've been travelling alot, so have not been able to post much. I'm in San Jose, CA right now, and the next stop is Japan. I managed to take a look at Brownstoner late yesterday, and have a few comments:

-Montrose: I have to agree with Sam that your QOTD yesterday was REALLY off the mark. You are advocating that the government seize private property for another private purpose (housing) that you deem socially noble. Allow me to invite you to read the history of the old Title 1 program of the 1950's, if you want to see how that idea works.

-I was also struck that folks are in a mood to curtail freedom: having government seizing private property, having government ban "fedders architects and folks even complained about streetcorner preachers. Lighten up folks!! It's a free country.

-Finally, what's come over Sam? A month ago he was writing that NYC is in a golden age and now he's talking about packing it in and moving to Rye. Not only is our friend a curmudgeon, he's a mercurial one at that.

Christopher;

Your story is quite similiar to mine. Maybe that's why we're on the "right" side of things.

;-)

benson....the building that was being spoken of has literally been "abandoned" by it owner. Something needs to be done to places like that which, at the very least are an eyesore and blight on the community, and moreso are downright dangerous.

The preacher/church issue was a valid one as well....they were breaking certain laws and there's no right ro constantly blast music as a public nuissance.

Where are you staying in japan??? I'm always at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. It went through its "tired" days in the 90s but I quite like it now. Location can't be beat.

Rob-
It does ring true for those who care about status, which is a hell of alot of us. But same can be said for so many things, designer bags, iphones, $100 t-shirts....

Which sparks a new madlib

I will be staying at the Palace hotel. It's right across the street from the Emperor's Palace complex. I will also be staying in Mito City, in Ibaraki prefecture.

I wasn't referring to the abandoned house. I was referring to MM's QOTD. Take a look at it again.

I also wasn't referring to the issue of the Church with the loud noise. I was referring to some comments along the line that public demonstrations of faith should be banned.

As Paul Fussell writes, the real difference between elites and lower classes is that elites take their drinks dry, lower classes like them sweet.

a _____________is not so much ___________ as it is a way of signifying one's membership in a certain class,

a nicely mulched sidewalk tree plot is not so much for preserving ground moisture as it is a way of signifying one's membership in a certain class.

I rant.

I see no pattern in the ongoing distribution of mulch in Bed Stuy. Some non-landmarked (and arguably uglier) blocks are getting it. The landmarked block between Bainbridge and Decatur is often the worst for litter while our nonlandmarked block is amongst the cleanest, yet we get no mulch.

Yes, the Palace Hotel is not far from the Imperial. The Imperial finally got the "western breakfast" right along about 1994 or so.

DIBS;

I speak about 10 words of Japanese.

If you're ever in Mito City, there is an incredible pub near the train station called "Sound and Fury". It is notable for two things:

-it has an extensive assortment of bourbons. I've never even heard of half the brands they have.

--it has an incredible collection of America jazz recordings, mostly in the form of old vinyls.

The pub seats about 10. You sit at the bar, sip Bourbon, and the owner plays jazz songs on request on his old turntable. An incredible experience, in little old Mito City, Japan.

Posted by: benson at February 12, 2009 10:11 AM

Here is what most Brownstoner think:

"For those of us who are not "with it":

It's a tattoo on the lower back, right above the ________. When women get them, they're referred to 'tramp stamp'

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 12, 2009 10:25 AM

tramp stamp = a small tattoo, usually a butterfly or a chinese symbol on above the buttcrack (aka as a coin slot) on a girls (or gay guys butt).

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 12, 2009 10:26 AM

Yes, Japan is full of those great quirky places. If you want to go to the IH for the scotch it's "Teikoku Hoteru" to the taxi driver.

LOL...a tramp stamp is that tatoo on the back just above the buttcrack. This discussion always reminds me of this Mexican/Columbian bar/restaurant on 46th street called Tequilazzo. One of the female bartenders always carries her "church key" stuck down the back of her pants!!!!! My hetero friends love it. I'm more focused on the waiters.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 12, 2009 10:26 AM

tramp stamp is a tattoo at the base of the spine - on occasion the bearer of said 'stamp' wears low cut jeans so the 'tat' is viewable to all - get with it benson! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 12, 2009 10:28 AM

I really think the conservatives among us need to stop beating the very old, very dead horse of "it's all the liberal elite's fault." Anyone with an eyeball who watched the conventions saw exactly who made up each party's demographics- the liberal elite that they seem to think- in their paranoia- controls the country, can be found maybe with an electron microscope.

As for our fears of liberals making the government seize private property or curtail our freedoms- where have you people been for the last 8 years of the Bush Administration? The Patriot Act? The -er- liberalization of eminent domain? The freeing of the evangelical horses to run rampant of the family rights of others? The loosening of financial regulations? No wonder the GOP is in such a sad state. They are taking no responsibility for anything they've done.

Well folks- it's 2009 The old labels don't work, especially because the conservatives have so truly perverted them and turned them inside out. You took the principles of liberalism- as you interpreted them- and used them for your own ends. Sorry guys- we liberals don't buy it. You had 8 years to screw it up and that's the only thing you've done well. Maybe that's why you misinterpret what MM was saying- that new conservative guilt.

Use your imagination about the tattoos.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 12, 2009 10:32 AM

Benson, I unabashedly take the position that I don't have to be politically correct all the time.

I care very much about what I see as the intertwined threads of well built affordable housing, historic preservation, the appreciation and revitalization of good architecture, and the growth and health of neighborhoods. I also advocate sensible reuse and, pardon the use of an overdone phrase, green building practices, by which I mean not so much the use of overpriced eco products, but the recycling of perfectly good housing stock, and the components therein.

The concept of the City as sheriff may indeed prove to be impractical or even illegal, but my comments come from the frustration of seeing buildings lay abandoned and empty, while people are crowding into homeless shelters. I'd like to see more Habitat For Humanity like, sweat equity programs, where people can participate in their home's construction, and keep that sense of pride that comes from doing work and seeing the results of your labor. Anyone who's ever even painted a room knows that feeling.

There should be no abandoned, boarded up housing stock in this city, especially smaller multi-unit buildings, where you would get more bang for your renovation and housing buck. I recently sat in on a community meeting where the concerns of the homeless were discussed, and the general concensus from experts is that moving a vast majority of the homeless into permanent housing would be cheaper in the long run than our current shelter system.

Restoring our housing stock builds neighborhoods, and creates jobs. Some very inventive people are out there recycling building materials, and coming up with great ideas to do things simply, cheaply, and most important, well. Let's use some of those ideas and people. More industries, more jobs. Let's preserve the beautiful buildings like yesterday's Hancock St apts. They add to the streetscape, they are well built, and they are of a size that can provide housing, as well as commercial footholds in a neighborhood.

Enough preaching on the open thread. Just want to say that in a better world, these things would be possible. Enjoy your trip, I wish you travelling mercies, and success.

Bxgrl;

All guns blasting today, eh?

Allow me to remind you that the Patriot Act was re-authorized by the Congress 2 years ago, that is, when the Democrats were in full control of both houses.

As to the demographics of each party, please recall that the blue states are those on the wealthy coasts of the country.

Finally, the Kelo decision of the Supreme Court left the issue of eminent domain up to the states. Take a look at which states have passed private property protection laws, and which have not. One hint: use a red-blue color coding. All the elected officials in NY support the use of eminent domain to take private property for non public use - like AY!!!!

Need I remind you of how congress actually works? the fact that the democrats had more bodies in the seats doesn't mean bills will pass or there won't be changes or politicians will not get coerced. the Republicans are very good at coercion. But as I said, I'm tired of beating a dead horse.

Personally, I don't care which party is supporting eminent domain for private developers. As far as I am concerned, they s*ck. This was never the intention of the use of eminent domain but lets not blame liberals and democrats for every evil. Or accuse MM of advocating governemnt seizures.

Other than that, we missed you!

So I'm basically done posting here I think (I know you all will be very happy about that) but I would like to state for the record that Sam's last post on the Remsen Street co-op yesterday was about the most offensive, rude and downright most disrespectful comment I've ever read on this blog. I mean really bad.

Most of my most harshest of words in the past couple weeks were reserved for that sorry excuse for a man, and his post yesterday made me feel like he deserved every word of it, if not more.

He really should be ashamed of himself for talking to another human being like that, especially someone he does not know personally.

Reading that comment was basically the last straw for me.

Feel free to celebrate.

11217..I agree that sam's rant was over the top but I too have wanted to say some of those things to rob as well; certainly not the family issues which are sad. I went at him after he posted in the retail sales thread today.

Hope you don't leave. You shouldn't take too much of this so literally or personally. It's largely what blogs are about and you're not likely to find one much more civil, generally than this one.

Besides, you like the real estate porn. Who doesn't?

Montrose...I follow your posts probably more closely than almost anyone's here, and yes...it's come to my attention that we do have a lot in common, I think. Especially with regard to your opera/classical music interests.

Dave, that personal attack on Rob was absolutely disgusting. I read it and felt sick to my stomach for a second. I know I shouldn't take it so personally, but after so many people seemed to be attacking me this past week (and seemingly siding with Sam) it really left a bad taste in my mouth (don't say it...).

I know it's not about sides (well besides for the team bear/bull stuff) but his comment totally crossed the line.

Maybe I just need a couple days to cool off, and come back with a more open mind when the time is right.

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 12, 2009 11:35 AM

THL, I have friends who sang there often, that's a shame. There haven't been that many professional venues around for quite a while. This one will be an important loss. In the line between music school/conservatory graduate and international superstar, there used to be semi-pro, and smaller professional venues where a singer could practice their stagecraft, hone their chops and move up with roles on the resume, so that when you auditioned for the Met, or even for an agent, you had experience. One by one, these organizations are disappearing, and more and more people are struggling to get the few jobs available.

You would think that might separate the wheat from the chaff, talent wise, but that isn't always the case. Like any form of show biz, it's not talent that always wins the day, it's who you know, what you look like, who's your agent or teacher, what you look like, who you'll do to get the job, and what you look like. Sometimes a talent is just so great, none of the rest matters, but those people are rare.

11217, thanks, I hope we get to have those conversations someday.

Yep, it sure is!
It's hard to read though.

Hm, interesting. 11217, It must have just hit you on the wrong day at the wrong time. I think you'll live. Take two advil and call us in the morning. ; )

well if DIBS, 11217, and Rob were to leave, things really would be fruitless around here!

You guys are all too much. No wonder I don't get anything done around here until the afternoon, unless I actually leave the room. That kumbaya was priceless. So was dropping the F bomb.

Mr. Snark-
I'm always true to you darlin'

I'm always true to you darlin'

That was a brilliant comment BRG- and I mean it.
----------------------------
11217- I know I have a very emphatic writing style and it comes across sometimes angrier than I mean it to. And then sometimes I really am pissed:-)
But the fact is it's very hard to know wactly what we mean when we type it in- there's no facial expressions, no voal intonations- it's really difficult. But that said, you were right and I admire you for stepping up and saying it.

11217;

I have to make this quick because I'm travelling.

Please don't leave. I think you are one of the more "vital" posters here. You always have something interesting to say, even if it sometimes gets my blood pressure up

;-)

Actually, as Montrose once said, you appreciate the folks who disagree with you, because they make you think.

I don't know what's gotten into Sam. Sometimes, he can be among the more witty and insightful folks. Lately, he seems to be in a really sour mood. I didn't see his post to Rob until you called my attention to it. It was totally over the line, especially the remarks about his family.

Sam, get a grip!! Please let the old Sam come back.

I always find that low class when someone pees over the lot line. The other guy's just in the "grab your feet' position.

I suspect a lot more posters will now pay attention to the Third & Bond" thread now, which was probably the objective in using this photo. Remember the scantily clad contortionist typist?????????

To respond to Rob's initial posting: Brooklyn has "cachet" now -- it's kind of how downtown used to be before it got ruined by celebrities and tourists and such. Brooklyn will no doubt soon be ruined as well.

In fact, last night on Bedford Ave. and North 6th I saw those fauxpunks that hang around Astor Place. And lots of people who look like they belong in the Meatpacking District.
