House of the Day: 657 East 24th Street

This single-family house at 657 East 24th Street in Midwood has a nice feel to itand it's hard not to covet the two-car garage. The six-bedroom pad traded for $625,000 back in '07 and is now on the market with a price tag of $925,000. Any bets on whether this price flies? Seems like it might be a little high.

"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors' goods." Christ , the day before Ash Wednesday and all too. You should be ashamed.

Pretty house. That two car garage would be an awesome place to soundproof and store my drum kit.
Too far away and too far out of my price range for me, though.

I've had my eye on that one for a while. It's been on the market for almost a year - started out at $1m.
Not a bad block but just a touch too far south for me. Good space for the money and looks in decent enough condition.

CWB, offer them $625K
Posted by: dittoburg at February 24, 2009 1:33 PM
Um, if it was purchased in 2007 for $625K, and was put on the market in early 2008 for $1mm (now at $925), the owensr were looking for a one-year flip at over 50% profit? The ad says it needs renovation, so what gives? Am I missing something? Did they underpay in 2007?
Posted by: saminthehood at February 24, 2009 1:34 PM
ditto - nah. It's too far south and WAY too big for what we need. Six bedrooms? We looked at a four bedroom in Kensington two weeks ago and were like "this is too much house (and yard) for us."
Me, wife, two cats ... we don't need much.
Posted by: cwbuecheler at February 24, 2009 1:36 PM
CWB, offer them $624K.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 24, 2009 1:36 PM
if I thought it would be accepted, I would offer them $624k!

Off-topic, but cwbuecheler, you play the skins? Me too! When I moved to New York, I bought electronic drums, which I could use in an apartment. Just plugged my headphones into an amp, put a carpet down to muffle the pedals for the bass drum and the hi-hat and away I went.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 24, 2009 2:18 PM
Biff - I play them, but not well. Other instruments I play poorly include the guitar and the bass. :)
I've thought about electric drums, but right now we've no space to put them. If we ever find a bigger place where they might reasonably fit, I'd definitely look into them. The full kit - just a perl export, nothing special - is in storage upstate until I own something where I can finish and soundproof a room in the basement, or a garage.
Posted by: cwbuecheler at February 24, 2009 2:27 PM
cwb, that's funny. My first drums, which I bought secondhand from a friend, was a Pearl Export kit - standard five piece. I upgraded the snare and cymbals over time. The range of sounds and effects electronic drums offer is incredible, and the higher end snares and toms make the feel realistic. But still nothing like a traditional kit. Ok, apologies all...back to the house.

Investors looking to make a flip who are now not elgible for the bailout trying to dump. Let it foreclose. Enough of the insanity

Biff...ain't it great to be single with no responsibilities to enjoy things like drums, fast cars, etc?

CWB -- Would you mind sharing details about the 4-BR Kensington house? TIA.

Much better than having a poor wife who has to listen to you practice at all hours (trust me on this one- been there, done that) And he had the full monte (damn musicians!)

With no photos of kitchen or baths you know it is a money pit.
Posted by: BH76 at February 24, 2009 3:15 PM
I'm back! Couldn't see inside but it looks like it could be empty.
The house actually looks pretty nice with roof and siding in decent condition (and the garage exterior looks pretty good as well).
I guess the updating refers to the kitchen and bathrooms? The pictures show rooms in decent condition but looking a little dated (light fixtures, etc).
The block itself is okay - quiet and tree-lined. Some houses look well maintained but others could do with some sprucing up.
If the sellers are reading, I'll bid 624k.

chicken...why didn't you just break in and then post some pics on the Forum.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 24, 2009 3:21 PM
I would have done but I left my camera at home and my phone takes crappy pictures.
Still, you've given me an idea for tonight....(who's with me?)
Posted by: the chicken at February 24, 2009 3:28 PM
Pretend you're one of the doctors on House. get someone else of a different race to go with you!!! LOL
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 24, 2009 3:33 PM
Lesloaf - Sure. http://tinyurl.com/blfdam
bxgrl - My wife doesn't have to deal with me playing too much. Music's pretty far down on my long list of hobbies so I don't get to it that often.
Posted by: cwbuecheler at February 24, 2009 3:37 PM
I'm already of an "alternate" race. Anyone black/white/green around?!
Posted by: the chicken at February 24, 2009 3:39 PM
6 bedrooms below a million? Should be fine.

DIBS, someone just told me I look like one of the guys on House. I've never seen the show.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 24, 2009 4:15 PM
nope - always been "the chicken".
I believe I said "dew lay lo mo chow hiy lay been tiy see fat gwai" to you after you called me a retard.
Posted by: the chicken at February 24, 2009 4:16 PM
Ahh, yes, chicken I remember that. Did you see my use of the "Sec see, ou fan" yesterday? Eat shit, shit rice. I love that phrase. A guy in my industry used it all the time when his analysts had things backwards.
chow hiy is a particularly nice thing to say!!! LOL

"DIBS, someone just told me I look like one of the guys on House. I've never seen the show."
White House??
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 24, 2009 4:59 PM
Biff....there's no one on House that you look like. maybe a patient from one of the episodes.
Does BRG wear low cut blouses like Dr. Cuddy???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 24, 2009 5:04 PM
DIBS, I just clarified with my coworker. Apparently it is only because I'm sporting a little scruff at the moment, and that's the extent of the similarity.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 24, 2009 5:19 PM
"Does BRG wear low cut blouses like Dr. Cuddy???"
Who are you asking?? Who will answer?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 24, 2009 5:23 PM
I like to imagine she does.
Posted by: dittoburg at February 24, 2009 5:31 PM
Yes Ditto, use your imagination. Close your eyes and picture the hottest woman, that's me!
How bout this house??

"chow hiy is a particularly nice thing to say!!! LOL"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 24, 2009 4:26 PM
What else would you "dew"?! Oh wait....don't answer that...
Anyway kids, I snuck into this house last night and found out of date aspirin that the mice had been eating. This has been causing them to vomit on the floor, which created a chemical reaction with the wax sealant, and led to fumes that made the owners open the windows. The open window gave the flesh-eating wasps from the hive next door entry into the house and explains the symptoms of the patient. Case closed.
It's hard for me to take Hugh Laurie seriously after his earlier work.
