House of the Day: 615 3rd Street

Hot house! This 4,552-square-hoot brick and limestone two-family is certainly one of the grandest to hit the market so far this year. Built by an architect for himself in 1899, the house's kitchens and bathrooms have been updated recently. We can't find a single thing to complain about, from the park-block location to period details to scale of the rooms. Gorgeous. We'll see if the price tag flies though: They're asking $3,800,000 for a place that traded for $2,850,000 in mid-2006. Doable?

Sure you didn't miss a recessed light or two, or a patch of exposed brick?
3rd Ave is blue chip like a mofo and those details be drippin.

Totally doable assuming there's enough celebrities still home-hunting.

i am obsessed with this house at the moment...
http://www.stribling.com/propinfo.asp?webid=1106801&type=TOWNHOUSE
plus it has a fireplace. way way way better and cheaper i think.
Posted by: sender9999 at February 17, 2009 1:27 PM
i think im not creative enough to appreciate the space...i cant see past the schitzo combo of frilly pink cupcakey furniture/bed and retro zebra skin rug and orange chair. like lasers on the eyes.
Posted by: goldie at February 17, 2009 1:28 PM
well lazer eye surgery does cost less than a square foot of that place. okay and it's the second time i read this today wtf does blue chip mean?

You can't find a single thing to complain about? Really? How about the fact that every single room would need to be re-painted to get rid of those hideous colors?
Posted by: Park Sloper at February 17, 2009 1:45 PM
okay i googled it and got..
Blue chip may refer to:
Blue chips, the highest denomination chips in poker games.
Blue chip (stock market), a certain type of security
Blue chip (sports), collegiate athletes who are targeted by professional sports teams
Blue Chip (Acoustic Alchemy album), an album by Acoustic Alchemy
Blue Chips, a movie

do i see that they painted the entire fireplace BLACK in the retro zebra room? OIY!!!!

park sloper, who would buy a 4 million dollar house and then not repaint. don't be ridiculous.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 17, 2009 1:47 PM
sender9999: I understand your obsession! That's a fabulous house. Much better than the featured house.
PitbullNYC: I'm not suggesting I wouldn't paint a new house that I bought for that much coin, just that there's something pretty glaring and obvious to complain about, if one were inclined to complain.... Same can be said about recessed lighting, which can always be replaced.
Posted by: Park Sloper at February 17, 2009 1:54 PM
rob, blue chip, look up the 1960's frequent purchase program that gave you stamps.
buy 9 of these brownstones and you get the 10th free.

Mr B it is really funny how tastes differ so widely. We will prefer exposed brick to that pink, baby blue, and fuschia (sp?) combination in this place....really masks the great woodwork in this house. Now as far pricing goes we think this will sit on the market for some time. It appears overpriced by more than $1million. See 505 1st street.
Sender9999 we understand why you are obsessed with that Stribling listing.i.e 505 1st street. It is a much better house for a lot less $$. Thank you for posting it here maybe the broker and owner of the current HOTD will compare and "adjust" their pricing.
Goldie we are with you here, this may very well be a great house but the decor is way too abrasive for some of us...faux riche!

look, i get the google it joke, but it's moot when people are having a discussion about something and someone asks on a DISCUSSION board what something means. jeez. it's not like i asked what the word word means. i asked what something meant in context to this house. i did however google, bear and bull and figured out in the context of this thread and other threads it's been mentioned in what they mean. *throws all my blue chips at your head*
oh did you know they make blue tortilla chips!?! those look yummy!

I'm just going to hide my own zebra skin throws under my white vinyl couch in shame.
I really appreciate the boldness of that pink stairwell, although it does have me asking, just to make sure: no heterosexual man lives there, right?

Nice bloc, nice bones ghastly decorating, and that's coming from a gay man.

@sender999
ehh - Not bad, but I need a little room to stretch out. An owner's triplex is nice, no doubt, but how about this monster:
http://www.mmmgmt.com/brokerwebsite3/code/buildingsale_detail.asp?listing_id=21450TH,27087TH,26617TH,&index=1
7000 square feet across from the Brooklyn Children's Museum? Who's in?
Posted by: Rookie at February 17, 2009 3:00 PM
Rookie, that's was an open house pick about 6 months ago. Besides which, it's MINE! (if only!) This is my dream home.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 17, 2009 3:07 PM
Woah, can't type today. Plz excuse errors.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 17, 2009 3:08 PM
This house is gorgeous. The interior designer appears to be Jamie Drake. The rug in the girl's room is from the Rug Company. And that room looks familiar, like I've seen it in a home dec magazine. Montrose?
Posted by: mopar at February 17, 2009 3:13 PM
I really like the house on the right in the photo. That one looks like a gracious beauty.
There are some fine details in this house. Too bad it's all painted over. I'd have to strip the paint at least on the parlor floor. The decor is a bit much, but when it's yours, the rooms will be empty. Then the fun begins.
Floors are gorgeous, too.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 17, 2009 3:13 PM
Let me clarify. In my own home, I prefer hippie-intellectual decrepitude and original kitchens and bathrooms. But this is beautifully done. Possibly the most beautifully executed interior design on Brownstoner yet. Must be a tragic divorce.
Posted by: mopar at February 17, 2009 3:20 PM
Chaste and sober finishes, I mean. Nothing shiny.
Posted by: mopar at February 17, 2009 3:21 PM
I'm with DIBS, the decor is ghastly.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 17, 2009 3:26 PM
the pink hallway is very Liberace, or maybe Dame Edna, but
It's nothing that two layers of primer, a skim coat, and three layers of paint wouldn't hide.
Posted by: sam at February 17, 2009 3:31 PM
The dector is definitely ghastly. Of course, the website could be a little better. And what are you saying, DIBS? We gay men have very good taste and are therefore able to judge when taste is bad or we gay men tend to have dreadful taste, therefore your description of this as dreadful means that it's WAY bad? ;-) Just kidding...anyway
This isn't nearly as nice as the 2/13 open house on Eighth Avenue (which is no longer on the Corcoran website--does that mean it's gone--what a beauty it was--do you remember that incredible staircase). That house was also reduced to $2,195,000. Don't know what the square footage was. Maybe this is larger, but I doubt by much.
Maybe Norah Jones is looking for a guest house.
Posted by: RinTinTin at February 17, 2009 3:37 PM
RinTinTin...gay men have impeccable taste, until they start drinking. This decor is ghastly by any standards. That said, all it needs is plaster & paint.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 3:44 PM
> "gay men have impeccable taste"
There are exceptions, of course. Siegfried and Roy leap to mind.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 17, 2009 3:52 PM
ghastly by even my bad straightman standards.
'what you gonna do wit all dat ghast, all dat ghast inside dat home?'
(not sure why the blackeyedpeas are on my mind today)

"RinTinTin...gay men have impeccable taste, until they start drinking."
Then whats Marc Jacobs' problem?
Sorry for the off topic fashion week stuff - but did anyone see that crap last night? Nuts.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at February 17, 2009 3:52 PM
Not a fan, dh.
But the Jason Wu show was terrific. I also really liked Carolina Herrera and Carlos Campos this year.
Marc Jacobs is a disaster. In all senses of the word.
Posted by: 11217 at February 17, 2009 3:55 PM
Donna karen was good too - Diesel was hilarious today i heard - depression era chic, with canes and bowling hats.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at February 17, 2009 3:57 PM
I agree. DK has done it again. Her women's suits were beautiful.
I'm over Diesel.
Posted by: 11217 at February 17, 2009 3:59 PM
> "gay men have impeccable taste"
How then, do you explain Richard Simmons?
Posted by: East New York at February 17, 2009 4:00 PM
Is Jason Wu cute??? I don't know who any of these people are. Fashion designers??? I'm a bad gay. I remember getting yelled at by an old queen at Sidettracks video bar in Chicago because I didn't know that the woman in the video was Rita Hayworth.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:00 PM
"ghastly by even my bad straightman standards."
There is a lot of blatant heterophobia in this thread.
Now perhaps we should talk about great straightman standards. I would suggest Bud Abbott was one of the best.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 17, 2009 4:01 PM
Bleh...jason Wu's not my type.
11217...everyone gets over Diesel once their waist line goes above 26" :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:02 PM
We don't include Richard Simmons in our club. There is such a thing as "too gay."
And Lou Costello, Biff. The straight world does lay claim to Mr. Rogers, as well.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:04 PM
Jason Wu is not especially cute, but his clothes are beautiful.
He designed Michele Obama's Inaugural gown, Dave. Making quite a splash in the fashion world now. Anna Wintour allegedly even smiled during his show. That would be a first for her.
Posted by: 11217 at February 17, 2009 4:05 PM
DIBS, I would suggest Lou was actually the comic and Bud was the straight man. Another great straight man was Oliver Hardy (to Stan Laurel).
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 17, 2009 4:08 PM
He's not cute to me and I'm a RQ.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:08 PM
And no, I didn't know any of them personally from my days working the Borscht Belt...
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 17, 2009 4:09 PM
If I hadn't actually met you Biff, and knew that you weren't that old, I would have guessed you went all the way back to Vaudeville.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:11 PM
"discerning" might not be the right word either, 11217!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:12 PM
"I don't know who any of these people are. Fashion designers??? I'm a bad gay"
Don't worry dave, we cancel each other out as i'm a bad straight guy for actually following thsi stuff
Posted by: dirty_hipster at February 17, 2009 4:13 PM
"everyone gets over Diesel once their waist line goes above 26" :)"
Or when the 17-year-old salesboy asks you if you're shopping for your (nonexistent) child. Never been back after that.
dirtyhipster, I thought the first quarter of Marc Jacobs show was lovely. I plan to sit out the big-shoulder pad trend. I'm getting old, as I learned at Diesel.
Posted by: mopar at February 17, 2009 4:29 PM
im definitely a bad gay too with horrible tacky taste and no working knowledge of fashion.. but then dave said something very interesting, that they have impeccable taste until they start drinking. lol well there you go. ive always wondered what my problem was, no i know!

In that regard, we are no different from straight men, rob. Beer goggles know no sexual preference.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:34 PM
"Is that doable?", you ask. No, that's nuts.
Posted by: donatella at February 17, 2009 4:40 PM
Since most people would agree that home prices are down to about 2006 levels, what exactly would make this owner think that they deserve to make 1 million dollars in less than 3 years...?
Posted by: 11217 at February 17, 2009 4:45 PM
11217....maybe the furniture comes with it.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 17, 2009 4:49 PM
I just don't get MJ mopar. the media is infatuated with him and it seems he can do no wrong. although i have to admit, up until this season the shows/parties etc were pretty damn fun.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at February 17, 2009 4:49 PM
Anywho - nice house. too much money.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at February 17, 2009 4:52 PM
Hotd: $2.85 million to $3.8 million for two bathrooms. They must have used a govern ment contractor.
Posted by: Minmin at February 17, 2009 5:13 PM
While the house itself is lovely, each room seems to have been an assignment for the contestants from the much-maligned Top Design reality show on Bravo -- which is like a train wreck for me, I want to look away, but cannot!
Posted by: honeycut at February 17, 2009 5:14 PM
Wow honeycut, you pegged it!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 17, 2009 5:46 PM
I like that its only $18,000 per month. The stimulus tax deduction of $8/week should help to get a lot of these type houses moving.
