Dekalb Avenue "Gastropub" for Fort Greene
Clinton Hill Blog has the inside scoop on the soon-to-open "casual bistro" at 247 Dekalb Avenue that we reported on last month: It's going to be a "gastropub" called Brooklyn Public House that will feature both a 30-foot bar with 16 beers on tap and a back room with booths and dining tables at which to partake of the mix of burgers, salads, fish and chips and pot pies. As for the decor, it's going for an old-timey feel. GMAP

You get to charge higher prices for beer and bar food if you're a gastropub instead of just a bar. There's usually a justification in the form of period lighting and bead board wainscoting. And people don't usually throw up in the bathrooms.

oh hmmm i wasnt sure if you were just yanking my change so i looked it up.. apparently youre right!
from WIKI:
A gastropub (or gastro pub) is a British term for a public house which specializes in high-quality food a step above the more basic "pub grub." The name is a combination of pub and gastronomy and was coined in 1991 when David Eyre and Mike Belben opened a pub called The Eagle in Clerkenwell, London.[1][2]
The concept "helped create a truly British culinary scene" and "arose from a conscious effort to promote great food in well-loved places."[2] Gastropubs have been described as the Anglo-equivalent of the French brasserie or the Japanese izakaya [3]
Recently, scholars have debated the necessity for such an obviously redundant term. Instead, phrases such as "a restaurant with an extensive bar" or "a bar with high quality food" have been suggested as alternative methods of identification. Additionally, New York Magazine has introduced the term "Pub Grub" to refer to food of a similar concept.[5]
(ok i still don't get it) basically it's just a fancy bar, no? the opposite of a dive bar?

Please delete the "gastro" from the description. It's only used as an excuse to justify the high prices. Burgers, salads, fish and chips and potpies are just plain old pub food.
And for god sakes...
If it's warm enough to wear a T-shirt it's warm enough NOT to wear a ski cap indoors (even if you want to show off the cool polo logo on the front).
IMO this offense is 10X worse than a backwards baseball cap.

It's some sort of hipster look, THL. Most of these young hipsters wear these hats because they're going prematurely bald worrying about how to afford Williamsburg when they can't.

bitter ain't pretty, folks.

Yeah, it's sad. It's either that or the sad looking "david Spade" haircut right? Going bald gracefully just isn't cool enough.
In all honesty you know what goes through my mind when I see the indoors ski cap head? Ugh, god his head must stink something awful. One of my all time biggest skeeve-outs is dirty hair/head smell.
Enjoy the food!

At least the hats that the Japanese hipsters wear are interesting.

well is it a gastropub or isn't it? Fish n Chips and pot pies ain't gastro.
Posted by: dittoburg at February 10, 2009 12:16 PM
uh, The Spotted Pig (W. Village) is a gastropub... Burgers and fish-n-chips is just a pub...
Posted by: tanner at February 10, 2009 12:27 PM
dittoburg - if the fish is panko encrusted sea-bass and the pot-pie is made with cave aged gruyere, i think it gets a gastro badge.

Very well put, goldie.

Opening the mail I find a notice of a public hearing next week regarding an application to operate a sidewalk cafe at 247 Dekalb Avenue. Ha!

Great news. Nothing wrong with some new options for bars in the area.

"British" --- "culinary scene"
Historically, an oxymoron.

You all have missed the point. Whether or not it deserves to be called a gastropub or just a bar, the place will have 16 beers on tap.
16 beers on tap!!!
That's welcome news for the neighborhood.

Who cares what they call it as long as it has good food and decent prices. Guess we'll see when it actually opens. Lot's of people with nothing better to do than sit at their computer and talk s***.

i sometimes wear a winter hat on my head at home in the winter to keep warm because i have short hair and i keep the heat low in winter. i do wash my hair every day, i promise, and i also keep my hats clean!
i also like beer very much, also a warm atmosphere and decent food.
