Crime Rose in Most Precincts in 2008

70th-precinct-0209.jpgSparked in good part by a sharp rise in juvenile muggings, crime rose in every precinct in Brooklyn last year but three. “Electronics still drive our robberies,” explained Chief Joseph Fox, the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South The biggest percentage rises came in the Brooklyn South neighborhoods like Benonhurst, Bath Beach, Flatlands, Bergen Beach, Marine Park, Mill Island and Mill Basin. Crime in Brooklyn North was actually down slightly on a percentage basis but still was almost 20% higher than Brooklyn South on an absolute basis (4,086 versus 3,375). If you take out the rash of teenager-on-teenager robberies of ipods and cellphones, other crime in the borough actually declined. For example, the number of burglaries, assaults and car thefts all fell last year.

Can we break out the white-on-white crime? I don't mean the Madoff stuff. :)

for all those knee-jerk frightened of projects people and claims of worsening economy causing crime waves by the downtrodden-
"76th Precinct in Carroll Gardens, where 31 fewer robberies took place (from 125 in 2007 to 94 last year)."--->
Remember the 76th precinct which includes the very large RedHook project and the Gowanus Houses continues decades of one of lowest crime precincts in NYC.

Holy misleading conclusions Batman!

A few crime categories were up SLIGHTLY in 2008 from ALL-TIME lows and the tabloids and brownstoner want to portray a crime wave/chaos.
The reality is - there is no upward trend (Brklyn So up/Brklyn North Down) and while the rates should always be watched (since as citizens we should never allow things to go back to what they were) such sensationalism will only weaken the argument if crime actually does begin to become a problem.

That's right, stoep2, and perhaps Brownstoner should change the site's motto to "The Whole World Inside and Out"

Posted by: Atlantic Frantic at February 17, 2009 10:09 AM

That impression was uncanny. Except for the subject/verb agreement and correct spelling.

Oh, I do hope you're kidding, AtlanFran. Mind your rationale, please.

If the NYPD kept assrape as a category, I would check it before making any real estate purchases in the neighborhood.
