Coney Island Lager Doing Well Despite Great Depression

shmaltz-brewing-0209.jpgA ray of sunshine in a storm of depressing economic data: According to a press release, Shmaltz Brewing Company, makers of, among other things, HE'BREW Beer and Coney Island Lager, reported that its sale rose 80% in 2008 and predicts it will clear the $2 million sales mark in '09. Although it's a member of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Shmaltz actually makes its brews in Upstate New York.

is it true they actually had jars of schmlatz on the table at the old second ave deli?

at first i thought they'd be just about schtick, but they have genuinely great beers, and the labels are fun to read to boot.

dittoburg, you ever go to Sammy's Roumanian on the Lower East Side? Delicious Eastern European fare in a most endearingly tacky room with a cheesy keyboardest playing traditional Jewish music with some Frank Sinatra mixed in. They still have jars of schmaltz on the table and use it quite liberally when mixing up the chopped liver with the fried onions (to prepare what they call Jewish Caesar Salad).

Sammys has schmaltzy music too.

I think the last time I was there (years ago) the table almost collapsed under the weight of the plates.

I was last there with relatives and a guy at another large table was celebrating his 50th birthday - getting food for other tables and pouring vodka shots for everyone. It was like one big party. Everyone was into it. We even joined their party bus after to go get dessert at some Italian place in Little Italy. It was one of the most fun nights I ever had. Their tenderloin is delicious. Everything is artery-cloggingly delicious.

Vaseline is skyrocketing as well. The depression is their friend.
