sand-pier-2-3-09.JPG
Thanks to a tipster for sending in this photo. Does anyone know what's up with the sand being dumped on the Pier near Cobble Hill/Red Hook?

Those look like the toy trucks I had in my sandbox a few years ago. that's some pretty nice looking sand.

its the giant sand castle installation to follow up from last year's multiple waterfalls.

Posted by: dittoburg at February 3, 2009 4:13 PM

It does look like sand, but it wouldn't happen to be a new load of rock salt, would it?

Posted by: denton at February 3, 2009 4:14 PM

i would venture to say the most probable explanation is that its salt, not sand.

Posted by: brooklynlark at February 3, 2009 4:16 PM

that would be awesome if they made a water taxi beach like they have on long island city. those were some fun parties in the summer!

I third the salt idea.

Not long ago I called 311 to complain about the lack of sand on the pier. I had no idea this would happen.

Is it sea salt for the high brow gastronomic tastes of all those Cobble Hill residents??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 3, 2009 4:24 PM

That is the February shipment of cocaine.

Salt, not sand...

I pull up the Prospect Heights This Old House house and think it's on fire

freaked me out!

Posted by: bkkkkklyn at February 3, 2009 5:05 PM

It does appear to be on fire... jeeze...

Posted by: bren at February 3, 2009 5:16 PM

Holy crap Ringo, you're right!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 3, 2009 5:20 PM

but the workers are going in and out and if you look at the interior view everything seems fine

it must be some lighting issue

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 3, 2009 5:21 PM

don't they usually keep salt covered in some sort of quonset hut? maybe another water taxi beach is coming soon?

Posted by: janelle at February 3, 2009 5:21 PM

From the back it looks like the house is on fire inside the windows but i think its just that the lights got turned on

The interior cams show no such evidence

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 3, 2009 5:23 PM

The workers have been standing around and going in and out since you posted at 4:55. I think the fire department would be there by now.....even in prospect heights!!! :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 3, 2009 5:24 PM

Could that be light reflecting off snow on the lens of the camera?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 3, 2009 5:26 PM

should have added I don't think it's on fire. but on first glance, it looked like it was. I was sure it was! then I saw the guys working away inside. wind shaking the camera?

Posted by: Ringo at February 3, 2009 5:35 PM

and I like their painted cabinets! (not so much the rental kitchen, but whatever..)

"That is the February shipment of cocaine."

That looks like only enough for Williamsburg, though.

Posted by: 11217 at February 3, 2009 5:39 PM

That's not coke. It's the monthly Metamucil shipment for Brooklyn Heights.

Its not salt, salt needs to be covered and trucks cannot drive on top of it from what I know. I have been fairly close to it and it definitely appears to be sand.

Posted by: hhbrooklyn at February 4, 2009 9:26 AM

The picture was taken before it snowed.
Agree salt is usually covered and if it was, isn't it a little late in the year? I'm hopping the fence tonight.

Looked pretty closely at this photo and couldn't see any people in it. ANYWHERE. Most logical answer?
Decepticons.

That is indeed rock salt belonging to International Salt Co. There is more on its way too. Once the pile is built to its final height it will be covered.
