Closing Bell: Best New Name for Park Slope

park-slope-brownstone.jpgThere’s a thread on Brooklynian that wants you to vote for the best new name for Park Slope. Why the need for a change? The original poster states that "since no one can ever agree what qualifies as Park Slope vs. Windsor Terrace vs Sunset Park vs South Slope etc. I propose we just call the whole thing off and decide on a new name for the area." In the lead is Obamanutville and second place is North Sunset Park. Some write-in contenders are Slopeparksburg and Gowanuswood Park.

A little off topic, but I've been promoting Sunset Park as SUPA for some time. Think of it as Brooklyn's Tribeca.

how about shangri-la-dee-dah.

Obamaville is good too though.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 5, 2009 4:37 PM

Succeed or secede? Both fit into your sentence quite well.

I though you said spelling wasn't important...

Park Slop

Without expressing a judgment on Park Slope, everyone knows its boundaries perfectly well: Flatbush (South side) to Prospect ExpWy / 4th Ave (East Side)to PPW. Only the real estate agents and the folks who bought outside those boundaries hoping to be annexed-in would have us think otherwise.

Posted by: MaxOthermoxx at February 5, 2009 5:21 PM

Indeed, all the areas outside those boundaries are known as Slopey Seconds.

How about Glacier Slope.

Perhaps it ought to keep a meaning of "Why Park Slope Slopes", anyway. It slopes because of the glacier under Prospect Park. Yes, it's true.

From comments on today's Open Thread about slipping and falling on "dangerous" Park Slope -- we already posted (tongue in cheek) about the glacier under Prospect Park causing Park Slope to Slope, and people to slip and fall on ice.

Actually, I think it should stay Park Slope.

I forgot Swamp Slope

Posted by: BklynSoFar at February 5, 2009 6:48 PM

I always thought the western boundary of park slope was Fifth Avenue and the southern boundary 15th Street. beyond that its fringe, or worse, gowanus!

Posted by: sam at February 5, 2009 6:54 PM

It seems that the Park Slope boundaries have been creeping (and slipping) over the years. Originally, the boundaries covered a small area before realtors began slipping the slope for profit. (As you readers already know.) Over a decade ago, I read, "there is no such thing as the South Slope. That is just a title invented by realtors to charm and fool buyers." Today, South Slope is a real thing. Next thing it will go all the way to California.
