357 Dean Street Hits the Market

When Gowanus Lounge looked at 357 Dean Street (aka Green on Dean) last week, he called it a "perfect example of out-of-context architecture," a description that's made all the more painful by the fact that a beautiful, albeit down-on-its-luck woodframe house was torn down to make room for this six-story structure. If you can get beyond that, though, the layouts look pretty nice, the windows are big and the building's LEED certified. There are six floor-through units all with a little more than 1,000 square feet on the market with asking prices ranging from $759,000 to $799,000. We haven't been able to dig up any interior photos on either the broker's site or the development's site.

Out of scale to what? the massive school next door? The four story condos across the street? An as for the "down on its luck wood frame house" it replaced, it was way past down on its luck, it was a festering pile of sawdust that was beyond salvaging.

Not saying I love these, across the street looks more interesting, but I do think this is an appropriate tear-down and replacement job. Also, can't believe how fast it went.

I wouldn't be concerned about "out-of-context" architecture here. As kuroko said, it's right up against the massive building that formerly housed the troubled Sarah J. Hale High School. (I just googled it to find that it's now got the Brooklyn High School of Arts, as well as Math and Science middle school aka as Upper Carrol in the building that takes up most of the block) And it's 4 doors down from the no-pork halal chinese food joint at 4th ave, where the context is now all about huge new condo developments.

Love the wall of windows in the back. Hate the 1990's design bathroom. Already looks dated.

Oh boy, is that a sore thumb. It it were ON Fourth Ave, OK, but Dean between 3rd and 4th is a rare and unusual block with quite a few old wood-frame houses. Crying shame, if you ask me.
