Sunset Parkers Sick of the Porn

midland-video-0109.jpgThere may be more and more artists in Sunset Park, but there are also quite a few adult video stores, a fact that has residents increasingly up in arms. In fact, the melting-pot neighborhood has as many as 25 porn shops and peep shows, reports The Daily News. "Our community has been dumped on," said Community Board 7 Chairman Randolph Peers. "Mothers can't bring their children to school without exposing them to things they shouldn't see," said Gloria Hidalgo, 70, one of 200 Sunset Park residents who signed a petition calling for the shops to be closed. The shop owners say there's no cause for concern. Here's the money-shot quote from Gamage Prabath, an employee at Midland Video at 4106 Third Avenue: "They arrive at their sexual satisfaction here, so therefore the children and the ladies on the street are safe." At least he's not beating around the bush. And if they need an alternate local to "arrive at their sexual satisfaction," well, there's always a McSam hotel!

Could you possibly GMAP all of these places?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 10:36 AM

Dibs, I've walked past some of it and let me assure you, you don't really wanna see it. Seedy doesn't even begin to describe it. Some of the pick-up lines (or rather solicitations) that have been tossed at me near those places made me go home and literally get in the shower!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 30, 2009 10:39 AM

I'd also appreciate a GMap of these locations -- err, ya know, so I know where to avoid with my, err, children and such.

Posted by: tybur6 at January 30, 2009 10:39 AM

exposing kids to things they shouldnt see? from the storefront, it just says 'midland video', as generic as any store. i doubt they have xxx material facing the sidewalk.

time to make a new xxx vid called Sunset Porkers

Posted by: goldie at January 30, 2009 10:41 AM

sorry, other than we one place mentioned in the article we don't know where any are. seriously!

Posted by: brownstoner at January 30, 2009 10:42 AM

God forbid any of the kids watch sabado gigante. Thats something they shouldn't see.

Posted by: dittoburg at January 30, 2009 10:42 AM

PS has Babeland.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 10:43 AM

Generally speaking when I think about moving to a neighborhood, I go visit it first, so that I know if it's full of porn stores or not before deciding to move in.

I'm crazy like that.

Posted by: cwbuecheler at January 30, 2009 10:43 AM

ditto...I always surf through the Spanish TV stations now and then for some hot eye candy!!!!!! There was some extremely hot Venezuelan guy on one of the novella's last night with his shirt off. MUY caliente.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 10:46 AM

guilty also.

Posted by: dittoburg at January 30, 2009 10:48 AM

sunset park is one of the greatest places in the city.

Posted by: Santa at January 30, 2009 10:49 AM

locale, not local

Posted by: cmu at January 30, 2009 10:55 AM

that is awesome. sunset park is along the r line right? im one of those people who doesnt believe in porn on the computer, i prefer old school dvd porn and a big tv. i might stop at some of these places when i get paid soon! are there any specific stores that anyone could recommend as good? specially ones that have cheap-0 gay compilation dvds in budget bins? honestly id rather pay 10 bux for a 5 hour dvd with 30 scenes than a 40 dollar dvd with like 3 scenes. there's always a couple of good scenes on the compilation ones mixed in with the schlock.

these stores are also very good for the economy regardless of what people say. doesnt matter what the economy is like people still need to drink, smoke, eat, and rub one out.

Which ones have real glory holes, not those assinine "buddy booths"?

What, come on, you've been there, tell us.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 11:09 AM

Babeland = Playboy

Sunset Park's generic pornstores = Cheri, Screw, Juggs or Hustler

I guess it depends on how you like your smut classy or skeevy.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 30, 2009 11:10 AM

glory holes are gross. i cant imagine why someone would ever visit one. arent you afraid of a psycho biting your hoohoo off or something? creepy.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 30, 2009 11:11 AM

You must have some library, THL

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 11:15 AM

I don't get all the complaints. These are all located on Third Avenue. DIBS, you can stop by on your way to Costco!

Nobody walks on Third Avenue unless they work in those industrial buildings. They've been there for years and years with no complaints. I imagine they used to 'service' sailors off the piers there. As the piers are gone, there's still a large constituency of factory workers and what not near by.

"glory holes are gross. i cant imagine why someone would ever visit one. arent you afraid of a psycho biting your hoohoo off or something? creepy."

Make sure they take their dentures out! Ask the What, he seems an expert in this area.

Posted by: denton at January 30, 2009 11:24 AM

Sabado Gigante is one of my FAVORITE shows!! It's just plane awesome and I think it's 24 or 15 hours long.

All these stores are walking distance from my home, but with glass pumps on it takes me a while to get my shopping destination.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 30, 2009 11:36 AM

this area of 3rd has a lock on the trifecta of sexual requisites:

- Peytons Playpen for the warmup
- Vid Store for the take-home material
- Costco for the 3 Liter Olive Oil or Mayo before going home to enjoy vid.

Posted by: goldie at January 30, 2009 11:37 AM

...oh, and dont forget the plastic tarps and towels at Costco...then off home...or prospect park.

Posted by: goldie at January 30, 2009 11:39 AM

olive oil, mayo, and plastic tarps? youre hardcore huh goldie!

"doesnt matter what the economy is like people still need to drink, smoke, eat, and rub one out."

But you don't need a stimulus package to 'rub one out'. Just a helping hand.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 30, 2009 11:44 AM

Those Jello pudding packs are great for some foreplay!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 11:45 AM

I wonder...what would a Brownstoner gathering look like if we held it at a video store location in Sunset Park? (Be warned it's slightly racy)

BRG- "a helping hand"? C'mon, do your own dirty work.

BTW, I guess porn could be considered a stimulus package

Posted by: Troy McClure at January 30, 2009 11:51 AM

Pudding packs? Nah. Might I recommend...

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 30, 2009 11:53 AM

THL - obviously you missed the last Brownstoner gathering.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 30, 2009 11:54 AM

'BRG- "a helping hand"? C'mon, do your own dirty work.'

- He helps others most, who shows them how to help themselves.

- The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 30, 2009 12:01 PM

Or the invisible hand of the free market.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at January 30, 2009 12:05 PM

Now if these porn shops only had good cheap coffee and free Wi Fi I bet bayridgegirl would move to Sunset Park in a second.

That said I favor my porn shot on super 8.

Posted by: IMBY at January 30, 2009 12:13 PM

IMBY, it would give new meaning to the question "Would you like that with cream and sugar?"

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 30, 2009 12:16 PM

IMBY, Sunset is literally in my backyard. It's a short car ride to get there. I'm content where I am, plus I don't like to live to close to my job.

Best comments of the year!

If anyone knows this area well, there used to be a place called the Foxy Den when I was in high school in the early nineties. It was the only place where all of NYC could go and co-exist in peace. You had underage kids, thugs, Hassidiem, Mexicans, etc. all under one roof watching the Tuesday night girl on girl show. It was special.

Posted by: DannyBKNY at January 30, 2009 12:57 PM

and then the what's mom retired, dannybk? :(

How much rent are they paying? Is it comp to a retail establishment in PS? If so keep them there, the landlords need the income.

Posted by: Iknow at January 30, 2009 1:23 PM

haha "beating around the bush". Leave the sex shops where they are. Seriously.

Posted by: KHuebbe at January 30, 2009 2:12 PM

It is a shame that families have to be exposed to this smut in their neighborhoods. They have a right to raise their children in a non-threatening environment. NYC better wake up! This would not have happened under Giuliani's watch.

Posted by: motorinstructor at January 30, 2009 2:20 PM

Uh, sorry to break this to you, but this did happen under Giulani's watch.

Where do you think the old Times Square went?

Posted by: SnarkSlope at January 30, 2009 2:29 PM

baaaaaazing!!!!!

Posted by: dittoburg at January 30, 2009 2:33 PM

DannyBKNY- I totally remember Foxy Den when I was growing up in Sunset Park! There was another one called Sweet Cherry on 42nd that I used to pass by on the way to church (sooo not kidding). I totally get why people in the area are upset by it. As industrial as it may be, there are plenty of residences nearby. This seems to have become big business in Sunset Park for the few years, which is really too bad.

Posted by: jwald at January 30, 2009 3:14 PM

"This would not have happened under Giuliani's watch."

That's hysterical. These places were here before G, and are here after him. THere were zoning regs passed, about churches, schools, etc.

Besides G was probably a customer. After all he was boffing a couple of different chicks while he was married, remember?

Those shops really are over by 3rd Ave, where there is not a single reason for 99% of the neighborhood population to go. The sidestreets above 4th Ave all the way to 8th Ave are, for the most part, nice, from the 40's up to the mid-60's. The avenues are bustling with legitimate businesses. Sunset Park is a very authentic NYC brownstone neighborhood, and very well priced. Obviously, I live there. I do feel bad for the 1% who live over around 3rd, though, mostly because it's ugly and filled with fumes.
