Streetlevel: It's Fun to Shop at the YWCA

ywca-atlantic-avenue-0109.jpg
Now that its renovation is nearing an end, the Atlantic Avenue YWCA is looking to rent out the double-height space fronting Atlantic Avenue as retail. (Presumably this will mean significant alterations to the facade, no?) The offering includes 4,550 square feet of floor space plus another 1,800 square feet of balcony space. They're asking $60 a foot which seems a little pricey to us. What kind of business would work well in that space, do you think?

What's the difference between a YMCA/YWCA and a gay sauna anyway?

No difference. Listen to the song.

DIBS, this is Atlantic Ave, not Fulton Mall, where one has to be careful walking for fear of being tripped up by tumbleweaves.

Skating rinks come in many different sizes and shapes. An average sized rink would be about 18,000 square feet with a skating surface of about 10,000 square feet (approximately 70'x150').

I think this section of the YWCA was the auditorium. Sometimes rented out for community use. There was a not bad swimming pool above this on 3rd floor.
There was a sauna in men's locker room but in no way resembled previous tenant and current Lucky Chang site on 2nd avenue. Jeesh, you must be old like me to remember that.

You're not so old Petebklyn - I remember attending a party there hosted by some friends of mine in the mid 1990s.

What's needed there is a big pet-grooming and boarding place. Either that or a velodrome.

I think the bath house closed in the eighties.

Sorry Biff. I wasn't in the COTD thread. One only has so much time during the day to post here and must choose his threads carefully.

That said, ask her if she like the "Lo Han Toi Tchat" position.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 3:50 PM

Also, ask her if she has a brother for me!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 3:51 PM

Biff, I did want to do a re-write for your 1:46 post.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 3:55 PM

I added something relevant to the COTD thread.

"ENY...I assume you're referring to Lucky Chang's and not the gay bath house that preceeded it. No?"

Um, no. I'm talking about the auditoriumthat was "sometimes rented out for community use." Some municipal-employee friends I knew at the time rented out the space and hosted a big party with a DJ and a cover charge, the whole nine. I had a particularly good time that evening, as I recall.

Posted by: East New York at January 8, 2009 3:56 PM

Sorry, I confused the two responses.

DIBS - retail space costs way more than office space - 60per sf isnt really that high for retail space especially with alot of frontage - in this case alot would depend on the layout of the space (cerainly a balcony is not worth the same as floor.

At $60 a sq ft the typical 1000 sq ft store you see all over Brooklyn is paying $5000 a month - which would be cheap in PS

Posted by: fsrg at January 8, 2009 4:30 PM

Sorry...yes it is retail space.

Why not just make it a Super Bodega...the bodega to beat all bodegas???

Bodega King!!!

Tear that whole facade off and put in glass windows and line them with detergent so that you can't see in or out.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 4:34 PM

"You mean a Yellow Cab Stand?"

No, I meant a Mail Order Bride Pick Up Center, so Biff can finally get the woman of his dreams....well, in that case, we then should make it a Blow-Up Doll Superstore.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 4:38 PM

a wax museum could be fun! a scary one. anyone ever been to madame toussade's in midtown? i went about 7 years ago tripping my balls off. oh boy! good times! tho honestly i cant imagine that museum being much fun sober anyway

How about a trendy market that sells 150 different kinds of cheese, 35 different kinds of olive oil and WHITE TRUFFLES!!!!????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 4:41 PM

ACORN. They're going to need more staff and office space if they're going to get Atlantic Yard's off of life support.

Posted by: Boerum Hill at January 8, 2009 4:45 PM

"Tear that whole facade off and put in glass windows and line them with detergent so that you can't see in or out."

How about installing a giant tub and filling it with Mr. Bubble for the bubble bath party to beat all bubble bath parties that we were talking about the other day?

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 8, 2009 5:00 PM

How about an ESL Learning Center so BRG can learn to speak and write properly?

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 8, 2009 5:05 PM

This is old news. I&H has been trying to lease this space for over 6 months now.

Posted by: Shoots and Leaves at January 8, 2009 5:15 PM

Keep it up, Biff!
It may take me years to learn to write properly!!!
Do you have that kind of time to wait for my 'prose'?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 5:20 PM

it needs to be restored - the space inside is gorgeous and would serve the community well as a working theater. please no retail space!
