Streetlevel: Flyer Saucer Cafe Grounded

flying-saucer-cafe-closed-0109.jpgThe Flying Saucer Cafe, a comfy neighborhood coffee spot at 494 Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, is having to take an involuntary hiatus courtesy of the Division of Health and Mental Hygiene. A sign in the window says it's just a matter of straightening out some permit issues and that they'll be back in business as soon as this week. How's their coffee?

not surprised, its a bit dirty looking inside. but food and coffee is good, and a pleasant (but shoddy) backyard on nice days.

propjoe, this place is owned, operated and frequented by only jews. please stop going there.

For unkown reasons this place used to be crawling with comedians. I used to see Michael Showalter (of The State) and John Oliver (of the Daily Show) there all the time. No clue why. Decent coffee and nice staff. Kind of a college town coffee shop in Boerum Hill.

Quite the contrary, yo. It's all trust-funded WASPs with some brothas & sistas scattered. Though I'm sure a Jew owns the building

I'd rather see this place than starbucks or something, but it's hard to see why it's worth putting up with the bad service and mediocre everything else.

sorry, Joe.

Jew owned business.

And shes a fricken HOTTIE, if you like that sexy curly haired Jewish girl thang.

And I do.

Who's a hottie? Does she work there?

Posted by: PropJoe at January 12, 2009 2:33 PM

What's with all the comments about Jews? Is it supposed to be funny?

Goldie is an anti-dentite

Posted by: PropJoe at January 12, 2009 2:53 PM

Goldie with a name like a Brooklyn bubbie is anti-tooth? Huh?

Posted by: bricktop at January 12, 2009 3:00 PM

bricktop, you'll need to familiarize yourself with propjoe's history.

Stopped there one day as I was waiting to look at a couple of apartments in the neighborhood. The apartments were lousy, but I really liked the cafe. Great iced tea, good cookie.

Posted by: toadie at January 12, 2009 3:28 PM

it's good for the basics - excellent drip coffee, iced tea, place to hang out and study or read or work. their pastry isn't very good and neither are their espresso drinks. sandwiches and other stuff okay - good in a pinch. but with blue marble a block away and much more efficient and friendly, i almost never go to flying saucer.

"involuntary hiatus courtesy of the Division of Health and Mental Hygiene"

This is a bad sign.

Nice little cafe, I agree with BoerumGuy that it's like a college town cafe. Nothing spectacular about the food, but good enough. My sister-in-law loves the coffee.
