Quote of the Day

quotation-icon.jpgDuring the 19th C. the most notorious brothel in brooklyn heights was on the corner of Peirrepont and Henry in a magnificent mansion. It is now apts. It is one of my favorite houses in all of Brooklyn, every time I'm in the nabe I have to walk by. I imagine women of ill repute hanging out by the windows waiting for male callers. During that same time, Love Lane was used for illicit activity. So, this house on 'Love Lane' for $9,500 a month you better get some bang for your buck!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:31 PM

if anyone is interested i know of a brothel in hamilton heights!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 14, 2009 3:35 PM

It's probably the 2nd worst QOTD (next to her other one)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 14, 2009 3:37 PM

I don't go to brothels rob. I have them come to my home.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:39 PM

we will never live this down

Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 3:39 PM

i've been starting to notice the QOTD choices have sorta kinda turned into a total circle jerk actually..

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 14, 2009 3:40 PM

this building just sold last year.

(didn't everyone already know that this place was a brothel? later -- not that long ago -- you could find working ladies down the block at 55 Pierrepont, now an old folks home)

Posted by: Ringo at January 14, 2009 3:50 PM

welcome to the circle Rob, careful where you point.

Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 3:50 PM

Anyone know the definition of a "great competitior?"

A guy that comes in first, third and fifth in a circle jerk.

Apologies to BRG for cheapening her moment of glory.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:54 PM

"Bang for your buck" ... get it?

Congrats on #2, BRG.

Posted by: cwbuecheler at January 14, 2009 3:58 PM

BRG if you get one more, you will be tied with me for QOTD's!

(but who's counting?)

Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 4:07 PM

Actually there haven't really been any great QOTDs in the last few days. Gotta raise your game, guys!

Posted by: brownstoner at January 14, 2009 4:08 PM

dave i dont get it :( what is wrong with coming in 2nd?!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 14, 2009 4:09 PM

quote:

oh snap!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 14, 2009 4:13 PM

Well maybe if the subject matter were better then there'd be better quotes!!! :)

That statement however confirms that this particular QOTD is not that great.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 4:13 PM

rob,
thank you.
that was priceless!!

Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 4:14 PM

In the 1980s there was a rowdy strip club in Brooklyn Heights called the "Wildfyre." BH was a lot grittier in those days.

Posted by: East New York at January 14, 2009 4:14 PM

I lament the loss of Rounds and Stellas in Manhattan.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 4:15 PM

Point well taken, DIBS!

Posted by: brownstoner at January 14, 2009 4:27 PM

It was a joke Mr. B.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 4:29 PM

I am in total disagreement with DIBS, BRG's comment is NOT drivel. It might be drek, but it is most definitely not drivel.(see open thread so I can shamelessly plug my Kit Kat comment).

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 4:44 PM

Well, well, well.....What have we here!

Mr. B, your 4:08pm post was uncalled for!!!

Quote of the Day
I remember walking from Park Slope to Pratt once, about 10 years ago. It was desolate and empty. I remember passing a huge empty red brick building on the corner of Gates and I forget what, thinking, this is a beauty, but who's gonna want to live here. Look at the neighborhood now...it's come a long way.
— by bayridgegirl in The Big Draw in Clinton Hill: Architecture

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 4:45 PM

At least my 'drivel' is worthy of something. Some of you here, have said so much, but yet none has been been 'quoted'.

Keep blabbering you 'Asshats'!!!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 4:47 PM

there are days you remind me of a slightly more polished and sophisticated jerri blank, BRG

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 14, 2009 4:47 PM

Oh God, say it ain't say. A second award......

I should have never returned!!!

Posted by: benson at January 14, 2009 4:49 PM

Ah- shamelessly plugging your other QOTD. We need a QOTD competition- I think MM has the most?

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 4:50 PM

Make that "Say it aint so"

Posted by: benson at January 14, 2009 4:50 PM

Frankly, I'm just shocked that my Astroglide comment didn't get QOTD. I feel like Susan Lucci!

http://www.brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2009/01/closing_bell_fu.php

Congrats BRG!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 14, 2009 4:50 PM

And she still resorts to namecalling. Very unsophisticated. Not too dissimilar from the women hanging out of the windows that she speaks of.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 4:51 PM

Sniff.. I have been QOTD too ya know! (And I did mean drek in a good way, BRG. Not like that evil DIBS :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 4:52 PM

'Very unsophisticated.'
Don't expect anything else from this honoree!

'And I did mean drek in a good way'
oh, really!

Where's your Kit Kat phrase, can't find it?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 4:57 PM

I was quoted once! Ok, it was just once, and it wasn't really a very good quote but it was mine and it was QOTD!!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 4:58 PM

Anybody old enough here (besides myself) to remember Red Buttons and his "Never got a dinner" routine?

Well, I feel like adapting it: "I posted and I posted, but I never got a QOTD"

Posted by: benson at January 14, 2009 5:01 PM

East New York... thanks for remembering Club Wildfire. That was back when one could get beaten up by a topless dancer right in the Heights. Good times.

Posted by: buttermilk channel at January 14, 2009 5:07 PM

Awwwwwww, benson. That's just terrible. MR B! You must rectify this oversight immediately!! Or we'll never hear the end of it.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 5:09 PM

I got a QOTD within a week or two of starting to post on the site!

*flex*

Posted by: cwbuecheler at January 14, 2009 5:10 PM

"Club Wildfire"

Oh g*d, that place was so scary, I hated walking by it. It gave off the most negative vibes of any place in the Heights!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 5:11 PM

cwb: Braggart!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 5:11 PM

BTW - here's a link to a photo of the mansion I am referring to in MY QOTD.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 5:17 PM

The photo is fantastic, the QOTD, not so.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 5:18 PM

Benson Never Got a Dinner is Genius!!! Thanks for reminding me of that!

Watch the clip from the Frank Sinatra Roast below. The whole thing is great but Red shows up at about the 7 minute mark.

Enjoy!!!

DIBS...please provide a link to your QOTD, and we'll take a poll to see who's is better!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:31 PM

^^^^ Ooops!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:31 PM

BRG....please see my vanity quote above.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 5:32 PM

Your quote needs to be original; as in your own words; not plagiarized from a world famous author.

Try again!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:38 PM

Congratulations, BRG!

Both of your quotes have been historical, and the reactions to this one, hysterical.

We'll all try this again tomorrow. The strive for greatness continues.

C'mon Benson! Your time has come!

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 14, 2009 5:38 PM

Gosh golly dibs- you have so many vanity quotes- which one are you referring to?

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 5:38 PM

It wasn't plagiarized if I cited the author. Jeesh

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 5:41 PM

BRG- when I first moved to BH I lived on Remsen St., a block or two away from that. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 5:43 PM

Thanks, Bxgrl...finally a post about the content of MY QOTD.

MM, you should have posted earlier today. Even if you said 'Shit, it's cold out!' the QOTD honor probably would have been yours today.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:48 PM

What is a masculine counterpart to the expression for "women of ill repute"?

Posted by: shalman at January 14, 2009 5:48 PM

'BRG....please see my vanity quote above.'

DIBS, do a re-write then.
BRG....please see Twain's vanity quote above.

'my', 'my', 'my'
DIBS, it's not always about YOU....this one is about ME, ME, ME!!!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:51 PM

'What is a masculine counterpart to the expression for "women of ill repute"?'

Biff Champion

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:52 PM

gigolo

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 5:52 PM

BRG _ thought we decided to refer to him as Boef de champignon? Or was it Spam Champ?

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 6:02 PM

I shouldn't have taken a shot at him, he's not going to be happy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 6:10 PM

^^^ or with this comment.
I'm sorry, Biff.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 6:11 PM

I know- but Biff is such a good guy, and a great sense of humor.

we're sorry Biff, we love you. Please don't hurt us.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 6:49 PM

bxgrl, do you mean beouf de champion?

Mushrooms have nothing to with it.

Posted by: cmu at January 14, 2009 8:29 PM

show some respect ladies, it's boef au champignon.

but beefy chalupa is also acceptable.

In my experience, after the third QOTD, one becomes rather jaded.

sam III (as in three times)

Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 8:38 PM

BRG, I was out on business most of the day. Gotta work sometime, ya know.

I'll try harder tomorrow. ;)

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 14, 2009 11:34 PM

Ahhh a new day... finally.

Posted by: IMBY at January 15, 2009 7:47 AM

I wasn't around much yesterday, but obviously long enough to snag another honor!
For all the people that wished me congrat's...thank you.
For all that poo poo'd on my parade...a big fat raspberry to you.

BTW – Mr. B. My 4:45pm was a joke, I hope you didn’t take it in any other way, and that in the near future you select another great post from me as QOTD. I know there are so many to choose from.

'In my experience, after the third QOTD, one becomes rather jaded.'
In my experience, after the first QOTD, one becomes rather jaded ;-)

‘Ahhh a new day... finally’
Yes, Let’s see if anybody can do better than my ‘prose’…carry on!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 8:16 AM

Like I said in the first post..."We'll never, ever hear the end of this."

That should be QOTD for today.

And who is this "friend" you keep talking about??? Are you stepping out on hubby with Biff, bxgrl, Miss Chiff, the What or someone??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 8:21 AM

I see the cheerleader of poo poo's is around early.
What 'friend' are you referring to? I didn't mention a friend in this thread.
Yes. DIBS, believe it or not I do have friends.

Step out on Hubby, never....walk around the block, maybe.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 8:25 AM

From the Bridge photo thread...

'try that tom'w, brg. Should be some nice snow.'

I'd like to, but my friend is not happy right now and probably won't come out.

I can't stop looking at this photo....it's stunning.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 5:59 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 8:31 AM

Like I said I do have friends...I know it's hard to believe that someone with my personality could attract other human beings and have a friendship. Maybe they just hang around me for my eloquent prose.

Did you see my comments in Wednesday Links. I was so sure YOU would have something to say about them.

Btw – I’m thinking of renting the Love Lane house and turning it into a brothel. Do you want to be an investor?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 8:42 AM

Will it only offer services of the female kind??? We have to find some politicos and cops on the take so we don't get raided constantly.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 8:45 AM

All services offered.
It’s not that big of a house…only 3 bedrooms. We’ll have to carve out some more rooms on the first floor and of course turn the Garden Level into a ‘dungeon’

Please....everybody in the neighborhood will have to be on the take….even ‘Boef’

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 8:54 AM

I didn't see Biff comment here at all on you auspicious QOTD. I guess that, unlike me, he takes his mother's advice: "If you don't have anything good to say, best not say anything at all."
