Plans Revealed for Philharmonic's Degraw Street Firehouse

299-Degraw-Street-0109.jpgAfter much delay and hand-wringing, the Brooklyn Philharmonic was handed the defunct Engine 204 firehouse at 299 Degraw Street in Cobble Hill last May as its new headquarters. Now, reports Globe Street and The Times, the non-profit has revealed its plans for the 19th Century building: HOK architects plan to preserve the facade while gutting the 4,250-square-foot interior to create a "multi-purpose space for performances, meetings, lectures, and other community uses on the ground floor, along with a music rehearsal area." The philharmonic's main performance space will remain at BAM. The renovation is expected to cost $2,600,000 and to begin this summer. GMAP

hmm...

given a space that was necessary to protect the neighborhood from fire.

$2,600,000 for office space for an entity that performs pretty much in-house at the BAM.

with a rehearsal studio and a theater thrown in as cover.

where can i get my free building on a prime residential block where all i pay is renovation costs.

i sincerely hope the $2,600,000 comes from PRIVATE donors so we can completely mussy the concepts of private and public.

given this, now i see how the arena in the atlantic yards project is a community facility.

no talk here of ulurp.

my bad... may not need ulurp as its a relatively small renovation.

my point was its a stretch on the zoning.

i am sure someone else out there can help distill the issue.

What architect sold tham that bill of goods and who approved spending $2.6 MM on 4,250 sq. ft.???? That's over $600 psf!!!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 12, 2009 12:46 PM

1/4 of that is probably HOK's fee.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 12, 2009 1:07 PM

Lazy readers...

HOK did the work pro bono.

The project is contingent on the orchestra raising the $2.6M.
