I offer the first YUCK!!!!!!! filed under things we didn't need to know.

How's this to discuss......
WHO PAYS THE FREIGHT: “Paying the
freight” is an American term meaning who it is an any
group who pays the greatest sum of expense, and who
it is that carries the greatest load. To listen to the Left,
the Wealthy in the US do not pay their fair share of the
nation’s tax burden, with the socialists always and
everywhere calling for greater taxes upon the wealthy
and for tax cuts even for those who pay no taxes. It is
of course nonsense, but it is what it is and we’ve no
choice but to always and everywhere supply the data
that proves otherwise. That data is once again
available now for the latest tax receipts from ’05. In the
past, the CBO released these reports in terms of
quartiles. Now they are releasing them in quintiles, and
for the higher quintile they’ve broken it down even
further. The data is really quite interesting:
Lowest quintile: 4.3%
Second quintile: 9.9%
Middle quintile: 14.2%
Fourth quintile: 17.4%
Percentiles 81-90: 20.3%
Percentiles 91-95: 22.4%
Percentiles 96-99: 25.7%
Percentiles 99.0-99.5: 29.7%
Percentiles 99.5-99.9: 31.2 %
Percentiles 99.9-99.99: 32.1%
Top 0.01 Percentile: 31.5%
The point here, as always, is that the rich more than
carry their share of the economic load. Yes, they have
enjoyed the greatest rise in incomes, but over the
years the tax rates have become more and more
progressive as the “rich” have paid a steadily
increasing portion of the total taxes paid year after year
after year. They will continue to do so under Obama.
They “pay the freight,” and sometimes it is that simple.

Hiya Dave.. Say Dave I wonder how is the Hedge Fund model holding up? I wonder if there are anymore retards sending money in?
Hedge Funds Will Be Ruined by Withdrawal Limits: Matthew Lynn
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_lynn&sid=au6xA2tIWSOw
This is funny!
Looking for a new definition of a hedge fund? How about an organization that takes 20 percent of the profits on your money in the good times, then refuses to let you have it back when the weather turns rough?
Let me say this! If you thing 2009 will be better then you are a clueless Jackass!
The What
Someday this war is gonna end..
Posted by: Return of The What at January 6, 2009 10:25 AM
2009 is already better Jackass. S&P 500 is up 8% over the past 30 days. It's THE leading indicator and is discounting what will occur in 6-9 months.
You are now the clueless one What.
Pay your taxes down there in the lower quintiles you deadbeat.

Glad to see this thread is bringing out the shit!

I'm going completely off topic and getting domestic on ya'll...
I'm not feeling so hot and was craving soup this morning for breakfast. I remembered seeing Mario Batali make Sopa de ajo on Martha Stewart and since it had poached eggs floated in it I thought it'd qualify as a breakfast soup.
Well it was so super easy and delicious I thought I'd share it with anyone who might care to make it themselves. Next time I might add some kind of green.

oooooh thanks! i just found the most awesome book the other day on a stoop that someone left out. it's a collection of short stories about people's relationship to food when they cook and dine for one. it's called "Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: confessions of cooking for one and dining alone." it's really funny and so many of the stories ring true. to the nice person who left out that stack of books for people to look thru, thank you! i needed a good book this week to read!

rob- who's the author?
THL- I'm going to look into that. I've been called Queen of Soup by friends and fam, so any good soup recipe I'll go for. Not sure about the poached egg thing- for some reason I have an aversion to eggs in soup. Maybe if I closed my eyes and didn't see the eggs looking back at me?
However, if you are in the market for an oddly weird but actually good tasting soup, I offer my aunt's invention. She used to take alphabet soup and put gefilte fish in it. I almost choked the first time I had to eat it but it was surprisingly good. Go figure. Note: Only for the adventurous, like people who eat Limburger (so not me!).
Posted by: bxgrl at January 6, 2009 12:01 PM
thanks THL...but no thanks. No poached eggs for me.
Easiest soup for me to make is Lentil...and it's delish.
If you have a good easy recipe for borscht soup, I'll take it.

Dave:
As long as the top 10% have 40% of the nation's wealth (not just income, but assets) and the top 20% have 80%, the tax rates don't seem so out of line.

You could leave the eggs out. It was great on it's own but aside from that it's a good base for almost any add-ins. How about serving it in individual crocks and melting a good cheese on top of the egg in the tradition of french onion soup? Yum.
Bxgrl- What's your favorite soup to make? I am pretty adventurous with food but I do have an aversion to gefilte fish so I'm going to pass on your aunts recipe.
BRG- There are so many different kinds of Borscht soup. My favorite is the Ukrainian kind similar to this one from Epicurious.
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/reviews/Hot-Beef-Borscht-with-Sour-Cream-3189
However if you want quick and easy, the Russian kind is the simplest (make sure you have a food processor to save yourself from all the grating):
RUSSIAN BORSCHT
7 beets, grated
2 lg. onions, grated
5 carrots, grated
1 head cabbage, finely shredded or grated
1.5 quarts beef stock
1 c. white wine
2 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Sour cream
Combine all vegetable ingredients in a stock pot and saute with butter until lightly colored. Add stock and wine and simmer a few hours. Season to taste. Serve with sour cream.

THL, thanks. I def. like ukrainian better...will try the recipe you posted this weekend, minus the wine....No alcohol for me.
Hubby made sugar free (trying to stay away) double chocolate macadamian nut cookies a couple of weeks ago that were out of this world. He won't share the recipe with me. But I was very happy to clean up the very messy kitchen in exchange for more cookies.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 1:09 PM
Rob- that's my comfort food. I LOVE onion rings. Any kind will do. Homemade, minced frozen, whatever. I also love to dip them in Chipotle Mayo (equal parts mayo and any chipotle sauce) or blue cheese dressing. I know, I know, very healthy!
BRG- If no wine try squeezing in the juice of one lemon for a little acidity.
While I love cooking baking is not my love. It's way to scientific, less recipe fudging allowed. So cleaning in exchange for cookies is right up my ally!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 6, 2009 1:23 PM
yeah it was the minced frozen kind i made. honestly i never had them before. they tasted just like white castle for some reason (ahhh the good old days of white castle)

ETA - speaking of white castle, my aunt worked at one for like 20 years in jersey. she could not even when she showered get the scent of white castle off of her. it was really weird.

THL- I make Mad Scientist soup- which means I look in the fridge and experiment. I love stewpot/leftovers soup, but its the spices that make the taste. And sometimes I toss in a packet or two of Knorr 4 cheese sauce mix.
Luckily ofr me my landlord bakes. when its cookies I get to lick the bowl. sadly the landlord has been remiss in baking cookies this year :-(
Posted by: bxgrl at January 6, 2009 1:41 PM
Landlord hasn't seen much soup, either.

bxgrl....according to the prevailing wisdom on another thread you should attempt to renogotiate the rent. Maybe you could even do it in the middle of the lease. Nothing in Crown heights or Bed Stuy should rent for more than $600 anyway.
My tenants gave me a sweater for Christmas. I hope they weren't trying to tell me something.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 6, 2009 1:52 PM
DIBS, please wear it to the next get together.

BRG...what's with the panda bear on a Christmas sweater????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 6, 2009 2:00 PM
Maybe it was knit by an asian.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 2:04 PM
Well not by an Indian, a Thai, a Malay, a Laotian, a Cambodian, a Filipino. Been there, done that. No pandas in any of those Asian countries.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 6, 2009 2:15 PM
"No pandas in any of those Asian countries."
DIBS, hard to read, but are you using 'pandas' as a slur?
If you are, very witty...if not, shame on me!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 2:22 PM
NO. There was a panda on the sweater. You broadly and very un-PC assumed that any asian would put it there when it's really only likely to be someone from mainland China...which is prbably where it was made.
Did you know that about 98% of ALL Christams decorations are made in China now.
Now "Yellow cabs"...that's a completely different story.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 6, 2009 2:31 PM
"You broadly and very un-PC"
I'm a very un-PC Broad!
'Yellow Cab'....hhhmmmm. Not sure what this is? If I was an asian, could I, as a female, be one?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 2:36 PM
Ummm, yes. Especially if you're "selling it" at the Days Inn.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 6, 2009 2:58 PM
That's what I thought. Is it only used for females or also males?
I don't 'sell' anything!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 3:04 PM
Typically females. I never "sold" it either but if I was able to sell it as many times as I gave it away I'd be far more wealthy. :)

i was just in a long line at starbucks and having to hear this girl yap incessantly about her gym routine saying how she only missed one day last year and went 364 nights. how she has a friend visiting from buenos aires but she cannot interfere with her gym routine and gets home at 10 and then goes to sleep. the girl she was talking to just has this glazed like like uuuuuh

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 6, 2009 3:20 PM
Sadly the gym is the only social outlet for many people. Did she at least look like she benefitted from all this exercise????

I think I just set myself up!!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 3:38 PM
omg! You're right DIBS! the nerve of my landlord -they never even finished the outhouse and told me candles are an upgrade from electrical. Is that true??
Well...ok...true, I didn't shovel a lot of snow- but in my defense I did think about it. And I served 2- count 'em!- 2! holiday dinners to which I invited the landlord and they partook (?). Ok- so I made them eat in the hallway, but jeesh- ya gotta have some standards!
Posted by: bxgrl at January 6, 2009 3:40 PM
"I didn't shovel a lot of snow.....I did think about it."
I'm sure your landlady THOUGHT about baking cookies.
Renters THINK they deserve everything!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 6, 2009 3:56 PM
Hey! I thought about it REALLY hard! And I gave my salt shaker to my brother-in-law to salt the icy steps with. Exspesive sea salt may I add). Now that is true consideration for the trials and travails of the landlord, who didn't think nearly as hard about the cookies :-(
Posted by: bxgrl at January 6, 2009 4:03 PM
Well, I see you've been busy here...touching on all the key topics - poo, park slope, bitter renters, stingy landlords and food! Bravo! All is right with the world...
