It's that time of the month (no, not that one). The NYC Case-Shiller number for November is out: 186.81. Down from 189.79 in October. That's a YOY from -7.66% to -8.69%.

It's moving further and further away from zero. No bottom in sight. Duh, that's the definition of an abyss.

Have a good day!

Do any of you use Truvia, the new sweetener made from the stevia plants? There is already a Sprite "Green" on the market and Coca Cola will be introducing one at the Super Bowl.

Weider Natural Foods is also marketing a steviaa-based product...0 calories, no triglyceride/sugar issues/100% organic from the stevia plant.

Naw BHO some Asshat Broker called them up and was whining! I had a talk with a Broker the other day and he said that the commercial Real Estate market is in a depression. The dumbassed owners don't want to lower the rent and believe in the spring the "Great Pumpkin" will appear.

Not yet BHO! When I start to smell napalm and quote Lt. Col Kilgore then you will know that the Asshats are dead and stinking. They still don't believe what's going on so they will have to witness that "Event Horizon" when everything goes BOOM!

But I would change this ***Bid half off peak comps*** to ***Bid half off asking price*** because those Crack comps are long gone and if you want to extract some leverage from a seller just put in the lowest offer you can! Let the dumbasses reject it and when the market goes Tango Uniform offer them less. Feck 'em as Cartman would say...

BHO and What---you guys sure are jolly this morning. Way to brighten the day! Must have been watching a lot of the History channel last night.

Dave--what country does the stevia plant come from. I want to know more.

Posted by: wasder at January 27, 2009 10:38 AM

wasder....stevia is native and grows perennially in Paraguay. However, it is grown as a crop annually and has been developped to yield much higher amounts in, yup, you guessed it, China. 80% of the world's stevia comes from China. It is controlled by one listed company, GLG in Canada (GLG CN)and they have a contract to sell their supply to Cargill, who in turn is Coca Cola's supplier.

Full disclosure: We at the Mutant Hedge Fund, LLC and I personally own shares of GLG.

Hedge-Fund Adviser Nadel Arrested by FBI in Florida (Update1)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aw53BS00RX9E&refer=home

Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Florida hedge-fund adviser Arthur Nadel was arrested in Florida by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has been charged with securities fraud.

Nadel’s arrest comes a week after U.S. regulators accused him of defrauding clients while overstating six funds’ investments by $300 million. Nadel, 76, who disappeared Jan. 14, “recently” transferred at least $1.25 million from two funds to a secret bank account, the Securities and Exchange Commission said in a lawsuit filed Jan. 21 at federal court in Tampa, Florida. The funds’ total assets now are less than $1 million, the agency said. Nadel will appear in court today.

The FBI arrested Nadel today in Tampa, agency spokeswoman Monica McLean said in an interview.

The SEC case is Securities and Exchange Commission v. Arthur Nadel, et. al., 09-cv-00087, U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida (Tampa).

Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Nicholas Cosmo, founder of Agape World Inc. in Hauppauge, New York, was charged with defrauding 1,500 investors of more than $370 million, U.S. authorities said.

Cosmo, arrested yesterday in New York, claimed to be in the lending business. He lent only $10 million of the money raised, according an affidavit supporting a warrant authorizing a search of his offices

He lost 80 percent of $100 million he used in commodities futures trading, according to the affidavit.

Can assheads wear asshats? Do they need to come in different sizes?

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 12:56 PM

I would assume an asshat needs to be slightly larger to fit over the asshead comfortably bxgirl. Good question for sure.

Posted by: wasder at January 27, 2009 12:59 PM

I think a higher quality asshat would come in several sizes but a cheaper model might just come with an adjustable band. I think I'm going to stop now- the imagery is frightening.

Some of us are smart enough to multitask. Not everyone's confidence is that low either. There are still a lot of people out there investing now. Remember, for every seller of a share of stock there is a buyer.

"Connection = Dave aint makin' no money. 'Click'."

I don't know anything about Dave's business to know whether or not your presumptuous statement is true, but still why should Dave blogging anger this person called jawbreaker?

Sour grapes, maybe?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 27, 2009 2:27 PM

Dave, can you spare a buck?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 2:30 PM

"why should Dave blogging anger this person called jawbreaker?"

Dave is known to work for a hedge fund and as we all know, hedge fund managers aren't exactly the most popular people in our society right about now. They're viewed by many as unregulated robber-barons, and are fast attaining the same level disdain once reserved only for lawyers and journalists. Maybe this person believes Dave, in his own way, symbolizes hedge-fund managers everywhere.

Posted by: East New York at January 27, 2009 2:36 PM

Well, BRG, I don't know. I'm a stupid Asshat fucktard who tried to bring white gentrification into an unwelcoming neighborhood. I bought at the top of the market like ALL Asshats and now I'm 'Underwasder" and getting the shit kicked out of me because I want to flip that house in 6 months. Soon I'll be headed for a great time at the showers of the ROTFLMMFAO Penitentiary and I don't have a buck left to buy any KY.

That said, I'll buy you a bottle of champagne at the March 19 "Keep On Fucking Around" Party.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 27, 2009 2:36 PM

Dave, can you spare a job? : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 2:37 PM

Well, ENY, that kind of statement would be the definition of racism to lump everyone together in a mass generalization of what is wrong with part of the population of hedge fund managers.

I'm truly hurt.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 27, 2009 2:38 PM

"Soon I'll be headed for a great time at the showers of the ROTFLMMFAO Penitentiary"

That's funny. I thought it was the "WHYMEEE State Correctional Facility."

btw, I don't drink alcohol, so no bubbly for me, but thanks.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 2:44 PM

ENY, people that commit fraud don't wind up in lowly state correctional facilities....the pen is a much more appropriate place. Leavenworth would be a fitting place. But then, as we all know, white collar crimianls go to country club pens. It's a tough life but someone's got to spend the time there.

That was awesome. It was so good I read it 4x.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 2:47 PM

"Well, ENY, that kind of statement would be the definition of racism to lump everyone together in a mass generalization of what is wrong with part of the population of hedge fund managers."

Hey Dave, for one, "lump[ing] everyone together in a mass generalization of what is wrong with part of the population" is not racism. It's bias, and wrong, but its not "racism." I don't think you're a member of the "hedge fund" race, Dave.

Secondly, I didn't say YOU were one of those people, Dave. I don't really know enough about your firm (or hedge funds for that matter) to say whether you're "honest" or not. In fact, I must say that you have been very generous in sharing your knowledge about finance and home renovation on this blog, which is to your credit. But I don't think you could reasonably deny that several of your contemporaries haven't made your industry look especially trustworthy or scrupulous.

Posted by: East New York at January 27, 2009 2:50 PM

More than just several, ENY. On your first point I thought that every thread was supposed to eventually wind up with racism as the subject and I hadn't seen it occur yet so, why not throw it out there. Bias sounds so, so, civilized.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 27, 2009 2:54 PM

Pop the cork on that bottle, DIBS.
Take a swig and pass it around.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 2:57 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 27, 2009 4:07 PM

What's entitled to his perspective, but celebrating suicide?? That's sick.

In any event, some historical perspective is needed. I've been reading about the battle between E. Harriman/J. Schiff against J.P. Morgan/J.Hill over control of the Northern Pacific railroad in the 1880s. Drove up the price of the stock from well under $100/sh to more than $1000/sh over a short period, took most of the market up with them (London, too), and tied up all the assets. No one was selling stock and short sellers were stuck having shorted stock they could not actually buy to cover. The whole thing imploded and many investors did, in fact, kill themselves. It was a panic way beyond anything anyone (other than what) is predicting for the current recession. The current one is a tough recession. Reminds me more and more of '78-82 with all the large scale layoffs, but with more of a white collar impact. But it is nothing like what happened back then.

I just don't see how there can be any rational discussion about anything with someone who takes glee in others' suicides.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 4:14 PM

slope, no one takes him seriously, especially me. That story about the Borthern pacific Railroad is EXACTLY what happened with Volkswagen stock recently. There was no stock left to buy to cover huge short positions and someone did commit suicide in germany over the whole thing.

But now we can be dunces together (like being jobless together, but less fun! :-)

I'm not allowed to bash the EVLL- I need a roof over my head. I heard of the chocolate covered ginger- bring enough for all of us! Sugar rushes are the most fun.

(cobble- hmmph. nice. She smears her clothes with tuna so that the cats are attracted, fooling you into thinking she is a swell person.) I'm looking at Widget, lying belly up on my couch, legs spread in bliss. I don't know whether to laugh or be jealous.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:07 PM

omigod omigod- i did NOT just post that. It wasn't me.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:08 PM

It's a cats life bxgrl! We just live in it. We live to serve them. My neighbors kitty shows up and sleep around my apt. She literally knocks at the door when she wants to come in!

Hey listen BRG, we are in the company of an actual SOTD winner. We should be plying her with gifts in return for giving us tips!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:11 PM

So you are telling us your cat is a slut? I would expect pee in my bed this evening bxgrl!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:12 PM

BXGRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope your sentence in ( ) is a reference to EVLL and not me. If it's in regards to yours truly, you are a very unsainted tenant, actually 'devilish'...unless I'm reading into it too much.
Please tell me I'm reading it incorrectly, otherwise, I bow to you. This tops everything I've ever written.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 6:14 PM

Ahem! Widget is a He. Is there a term for cheap gigolo? And trust me- I have often been made fully aware of their opinions as to the quality of my service (the little b**tards). There is no gratitude.

(yes, thank you cobble. May I call you cobble? Not just a winner...the FIRST winner. But, ahem, blush, I don't like to mention it. Too modest, you know.)

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:16 PM

"quality of my service"

This kitty will come over and DEMAND to be pet. One morning BH let her in, and she came over to me (still sleeping, cozy as could be in my beddy) and stuck her paw on my face to wake me up! Unfortunately, one of her STEELY CLAWS was out, and got caught in my NOSE! Suffice to say, I threw her out that morning.

(Oh dear g*d! I had to bring it up...Modest. Huh, not the word I was thinking of, but have it your way! ; ) )

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:22 PM

Goodness, no, BRG. (Do you smear your clothes with tuna too?)I was referring to the Great EVLL but does that mean I no longer am as devilish as you thought? sigh...now I'm disappointed - in myself :-(

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:22 PM

"I just don't see how there can be any rational discussion about anything with someone who takes glee in others' suicides."

When did I take glee in people suicides? Oh yeah here..

Slopefarm kill yourself and make my day.

The What (You're not dead yet?????!!!)

Someday the misquotes is gonna end...

My cat Moose must have mentored him. If I don't get up at an acceptable (think 7 am) hour to feed him, he'll stand on the pillow and start tapping my face. Then he'll sit on my chest and stare at me - I've had several morning frights. Look up and there is this green-eyed vulture staring at you, licking his chops.

actually my longhaired girl nearly broke my noe the other day. I bent down to pick something up just as she jumped up on the bed. OW! OW! I literally saw stars. They'll kill you, given half a chance. I swear.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:28 PM

Hi What! How are things at the bunker? Did you finish painting?

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:30 PM

bxgrl, Perhaps they're related? Yes, it's something like that...in the summer time the back window has a little open part next to the AC, and she comes in like it's her own private door...and many a morning I was woken up to with a paw on my face and a little furry face staring at mine - like 2 inches away. As if to say 'COME ON, Get your lazy ass up and pet me!"

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:33 PM

oops- meant nose

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:33 PM

Pheew!!
Okay bxgrl, I just picked my head up out of the gutter!
I have to stop reading the slang dictionary, but you did use some choice words (tuna, cats, swell), and your sentence structure. Come on, you can't blame me.

'but does that mean I no longer am as devilish as you thought?'
You should have played it off and said yes, I meant it the way you thought it. It was brillant, even though it was unintentional. I would just change a few words to make it better.

Bxgrl, re-read it again with a very randy mind and you won't be disappointed with yourself!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 6:36 PM

Oh i get the affection frenzy at night when I'm trying to sleep. That's when Little Stevie Wonder does her vampire act and sucks my neck for 30 minutes before she can go to sleep. It' s tough enough explaining hickeys when you get them from a guy - what am I going to say. My cat gave them to me? humiliating. But the mornings are strictly business. GET UPPPPP!!!! FEEEED MEEEEEE!!!!! NOWWWWWWWW!

does your little feline friend celebrate the ritual of the hairball too?

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:39 PM

You know, I have been spared the 'ritual of the hairball' with this kitty. Thank g*d! I have however witnessed it in other kitties - it reminds me of the time I had food poisoning from some bad abalone! Wretched!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:43 PM

omigod omigod omigod. I guess it's good to be brilliant, unintentional or not. I did realize the legs spread in bliss was an error as soon as I hit the post button. Someone should tie my hands to the chair and proofread my stuff!!

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:45 PM

dahhhhhhhhhhlings. I am back! I get so much done when I am not on here.

DIBS: Why is the image of me, Biff and bubbles so bad? I bet BRG would love to see it. I know you girls love a little man-on-man action. I think the What does too, but I digress.

ENY: You are killing today. Shouldn't you have included Real Estate agents in your list? (Take note, What.) Why do you think everyone hates journalists?

CWB: Info on Hancock Street please.

Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 27, 2009 6:46 PM

It was naughty. Even I noticed that one! ; )

Hey BRG, get this...now she's talking about bondage!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:47 PM

food poisoning is horrible. You don't want to die while desperately wishing you could. Stomach viruses as just as much fun.

Ah- just heard from the Great EVLL. Picking up dinner because she doesn't want to cook. The Nerve! If I'm lucky she might throw a morsel down the dungeon stairs to me.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:50 PM

It's gotta be something in my drinking water.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 27, 2009 6:51 PM

Yes! I see you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Your EVLL plagues you so...I hope the scraps are warm at least! Perhaps I can put in a good word with her for you! ; )

Enjoy. I'm off to have mine too.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 6:56 PM

bxgl...I was only referring to your sentences in ( )!!
Your 'legs spread' is too obvious...for my liking. I like my words a little more disguised.

Here's what I was referring to...I would just change a couple of words (not your key ones) and you'd be all set and can start writing smut....
(She smears her clothes with tuna so that the cats are attracted, fooling you into thinking she is a swell person.)

Miss Chiff is back....hhhhmmmm.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 7:03 PM

'I bet BRG would love to see it. I know you girls love a little man-on-man action.'

Miss Chiff, you're going to drive me mad with what you write to me/referencing me.

I still have my doubts, even though you assured me of your identity.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 7:06 PM

Gee, the timing is remarkable BRG.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 7:10 PM

Why do you say that, Cobble?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 27, 2009 7:12 PM

Can't wait to see Miss Chiff at the party. BH will surely be coming with me.

Whatever, I gotta go. Goodnight.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 27, 2009 7:15 PM

Can somebody give me the Reader's Digest version of this thread?

TIA,
Snarkius Slopius

"Hi What! How are things at the bunker? Did you finish painting?"

Been did that and I'm armed to the teeth! I'm very worried right now. I wonder if other countries will continue to buy U.S. debt. I think Obama better start the prep walks now and pull out all stops to stop the collapse of Asshat eh, Asset prices.

How is the job search going? If you want to do some freelance work online I think you will be OK. I have a friend who is a CPA and works out of the house. Does pretty well. Plus I understand that the customer service rep jobs are coming back to the states. All you have to do is have 2 telephones lines and a computer with DSL. The computer logs in your hours and you get paid via bank transfer. You should check that out and you will have time to BS on Brownstoner...
