I want to know what's going on between BRG and Biff. Biff was conspicuously absent from commenting on BRG's QOTD yesterday and usually is full of glowing praise and accolades whenever BRG posts anything.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 9:54 AM

Greetings and salutations...
...long time listener first time caller....

...sorry, wrong medium.

Just registered and I figure'd I'd use the Open Thread to introduce my self. Life long Brooklynite. 3rd generation Brooklyn Heights. Been becoming a fan of the site day by day for a while now. Happy to be aboard.

Oh, yeah, and is it just me or did the Forum page get hacked with all kinds of RV and porn goodness?

Posted by: christopher at January 15, 2009 9:55 AM

christopher...do you live near biff???? Welcome.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 9:57 AM

good morning! so i took the M train this morning cuz i missed the R and i KNEW i should never have gotten on the M train!!! i wound up cursing some annoying girl out who got into a hissy because i sat next to her! im telling you those stupid subway cars with the long seats that dont have indentations for people to sit are TROUBLE! there was definitely enough room for me to sit, but she was just squalled there reading her book (which was the cheesiest looking book EVER i kid you not it was something like Someone Goes to the City with some woman all decked out with a martini in her hands. CHEEEEEEEEESY). whatever never getting on the M train again!

Doesn't the M service Bay Ridge??? You should have known better.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 10:01 AM

lol dave maybe it WAS BRG who i got into the scuffle with!! hahaha. hey christopher, welcome to the nuthouse!

Christopher;

Welcome to Brownstoner!

Today begins the first day of the rest of our lives...

.....during which we will never stop hearing that a certain person won her second QOTD. Meanwhile, Sam is shooting for his fourth QOTD, so that he can publish his "Best of Sam" web-site.

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 10:08 AM

Dave, Rob, thanks for the welcome.

As for the M, I thought that line was a myth, don't think I've ever actually seen one of those cars (i kid, i kid...)

Posted by: christopher at January 15, 2009 10:11 AM

Benson, dear, you're sounding a little bitter this morning! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 15, 2009 10:14 AM

Is christopher really Biff?

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 15, 2009 10:15 AM

We all better tread lightly with christopher for a day or two, afterall, he was born in Brooklyn according to his profile. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 10:15 AM

my grandfather was born on the bowery. LITERALLY. does that give me some street cred too!?

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 15, 2009 10:19 AM

Cobblehiller;

Me, bitter? Nahh! I'm resigned to my fate. I announced yesterday that I am opening a new bar: "Loser's Lounge" for those of us who have never won a QOTD.

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 10:20 AM

I'll take that corner seat by the window, benson. Get me another Bourbon Presbyterian, please.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 10:21 AM

Drinking already DIBS?

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 15, 2009 10:29 AM

The Loser's Lounge is open 24/7 cobblehiller. Like in New orleans where I saw a great sign in a bar: "Happy Hour, 4-7, Twice A Day.

Another great sign was: "Drink Here, Dance Across The Street, Fight At Home"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 10:32 AM

Checking out my profile eh? I suppose technically I wasn't born in Brooklyn. I was born at NYU. But within a day or so I was back in Brooklyn.

Who's Biff?

Posted by: christopher at January 15, 2009 10:39 AM

DIBS: I'm struggling to remember the last time I was out at 4 or 7am drinking! The C.R.A.F.T. disease is setting in...

Benson: I know - I was teasing you!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 15, 2009 10:40 AM

christopher: long time reader and you don't know who Biff is?

Ok, I catch you up - Biff is a 30 something that sounds like a pot-bellied, argyle-wearing, 60 something in his posts. He works at the Death Star, a financial company, lives in B. Heights, and posts compulsively with DIBS and BRG as his most usual cohorts!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 15, 2009 10:42 AM

"Who's Biff?" You said in your first post that you were a "long time listener."

Biff's one of the few people who writes anything interesting, logical, rational and intelligent yet still refrains from ever being critical of others; much like myself. Yet neither one of us have ever gottten QOTD.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 10:43 AM

Sorry, Rob for getting into the scuffle with you this morning on the 'M' Train, but I was upset that 'Biff was conspicuously absent from commenting on MY QOTD yesterday'

Wow, DIBS, you're pretty keen to notice that. Nothing gets by you. Miss Chiff didn't comment either....hhhhhhm, but yet that's gotten by everybody.

So, are we going to play a new game today? Why didn't Biff comment?
Maybe I said something and he was not happy about it :-(
It would have been nice for a comment, but I certainly don't need him to stroke my ego.

I wasn't around much yesterday, I did have to put on the glass pumps all day and work. My feet were killing me, I need a massage.

Christopher welcome aboard. Can we call you 'Chris' for short, or if you prefer 'pher' or 'isto'. Enjoy your ride here, It'll get crazy.

'Who's Biff?'

DIBS, allow me:
BRG is one of the few people who writes anything interesting, logical, rational and intelligent yet still refrains from ever being critical of others; unlike anyone else here. Her posts are genius and she has gotten QOTD twice

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 10:51 AM

He gets a day, DIBS. Welcome christopher-pay no attention to benson or sam. benson suffers from QOTD-related PTSD and 4-timer sam is just smug.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 15, 2009 10:52 AM

Bxgrl - you're Okay!
I imagined you being awakened this morning by your tyrant slumlord as she threw the ergonomic shovel in your face.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 10:55 AM

Bxgrl;

At the "Loser Lounge", we will soon be offering a 12-step program to deal with QOTD-related PTSD.

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 10:57 AM

Benson - you need a wall of shame. Photos of all the 'Losers' that have never gotten QOTD.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 11:00 AM

I've been reading the site, checking out the links, etc for a while, haven't been reading all the comments until recently. Hence my ignorance of Biff.

And yes, feel free to call me Chris. I wanted "chris" as my login, but it was taken.

Now I suppose I will contemplate how to achieve Quote of the Day status on my first day.....

Posted by: christopher at January 15, 2009 11:02 AM

Bar menu at Loser Lounge:

A "bayridgegirl"...A tarty concoction of the cheapest well liquor, served "dirty" in a glass pump. Followed by a Brooklyn Lager chaser.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 11:03 AM

What happened to the Bartell Prichard Square overturned truck post?

Posted by: tybur6 at January 15, 2009 11:04 AM

'A "bayridgegirl"...A tarty concoction of the cheapest well liquor, served "dirty" in a glass pump. Followed by a Brooklyn Lager chaser.'

Good one, DIBS!!!
But you're not that keen if my drink is being followed by the Bklyn Lager Chaser. It propably won't be on the menu today, maybe in a couple of days, the mix will be worked out.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 11:09 AM

BRG, slumlord is getting ready to see what kind of snow and ice is on the steps. Certain tenants are always complaining of "slipping and falling", a bold faced attempt to avoid paying rent.

At last, I know what it's like to be one of the elite! Ahhhh, breath in that heady fragrance of powerful success!!!

'Certain tenants are always complaining of "slipping and falling", a bold faced attempt to avoid paying rent.'

Sounds like a pending lawsuit.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 11:22 AM

MM...I, as the epitome of a great landlord, was out at 6:45 this morning getting a headstart on the snow. I, unlike yourself, have very happy and reasonable tenants.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 11:23 AM

Yeah- what happened to pompous elitist black asshat?

Personally I feel so sorry for tenants who have tyrannical landlords. It's a life of stress and sadness inflicted on them by a person filled with the essence of overweening, ego-maniacal power over the "little people." The kind of person who would watch a cat starve rather than share their filet mignon with our feline brother(or sister) in fur.Never ask, oh slumlord, for who the cat yowls- it yowls for thee!

Posted by: bxgrl at January 15, 2009 11:26 AM

"Never ask, oh slumlord, for who the cat yowls- it yowls for thee!"

This from the person that made the Kit Kat joke?! ; )

"Whom", bxgrl. What are you, a product of NYC Bronx public schools?

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 15, 2009 11:31 AM

MM out at 6:45 to shovel and salt?! HA ha ha ha ha ha haha....gasp..uck..uck...hahahahaha.

Of course if sainted tenants slip and fall, dead tenants pay no rent. And leave their cats to aforementioned LL.

(sorry- for WHOM the cat yowls.)The LL has called in an emergency grammar correction.

Er...yes I was.MM. Proudly, if ungrammatically so.

Obviously, at 11:35am, MM ain't out there shoveling either!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 11:35 AM

BRG, there's shoveling snow, and shoveling the other stuff. I'm doing the latter at the moment. Since the tenant isn't going out, as evidenced by her constant posting, I'm in no hurry. The other, non complaining tenants have left for the day, and will return to a shoveled walk and steps.

DIBS;

I'm putting you in charge of the programme at the Lounge. My only request is a poker night, at which I will preside.

Ooooooh, is it me! Yesterday's QOTD'er!

'I'm putting you in charge of the programme at the Lounge'
Are you sure you want to do that Benny?
'Dildo / Truffle night'

I did a great post on here some time ago, referencing poker terms. Should I dig it up?
I don't know why that post never made QOTD?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 12:11 PM

There's one issue I haven't worked out yet for the Loser Lounge. Who will cut the ribbon and give the speech at its opening? Who will inspire us losers to go forward, despite not having a QOTD?

Bens0n

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 12:25 PM

My husband is a pool player. The terminology of that game beats that list of poker terms. Here are some fun ones:

Benson,

There will be no speeches or ribbon cutting.

Zero QOTDer's don't need all the attention, pomp and circumstance. We'll just happily hang out and talk amongst ourselves without the desperate need for accolades.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 15, 2009 12:34 PM

benson....are you sure there won't be any neighborhood opposition to this place? God forbid we serve alcohol and oysters.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 12:36 PM

DIBS;

There will be no opposition at all. NIMBY's love losers.

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 12:40 PM

Okay, THL you asked for it!
Yes, but please put those terms in a paragraph!

Okay, kiddies, die hard followers of Biff/BRG posts, here you go. This is in the style of yesteryear.

----------------------------
"strip poker?"
Poker? I don't even know her!
-Posted by: Biff Champion at December 17, 2008 5:34 PM
----------------------------------
"And I wish I knew exactly what you're holding."

Oooooh, I could right an entire dialogue for 'slopey Sex in the City' with this one.

Sample (a little randy...reader beware):

If we played poker, it'll be by the 'house' rules. The 'ante' will be set very low, or we can play with 'no-limits'. You should be careful not to bet 'all-in' or have a 'fast play'. 'Protect' your 'chips' at all times. Don't feel like you're 'Under the Gun' to place your 'bet'. Make sure you don't 'limp' out early. I might want you to 'hit me'....and I hope at the end, one of us hits the 'jackpot'

I love Poker terms...so many more good ones.

I think the biggest issue concerning the losers lounge is:

Central Air or Fedders?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 15, 2009 12:41 PM

Should I start designing the private 'Biggest Loser' Room in the back?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 12:42 PM

In a paragraph? Please BRG as a zero QOTD-er I have no skills in that department. Now your just being mean flaunting your abilities!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 15, 2009 12:43 PM

Ah, the Z Formation Triple Snap! That's even better, thanks Rob!

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 15, 2009 12:43 PM

Hey, Montrose,

I think you really meant to sign off as Montrose "4 QOTD, 1 NYT" Morris.

Sincerely,

Slope"1 NYT"farm

P.S. Let us know when you hit the MSM, BRG. (I realize I've just invited some smugness from you know who -- we'll see if he notices).

P.P.S. THL, for us longtime Loser's Lounge denizens, the key questions are 1. recessed lighting? 2. Victorian vs. Edwardian trim (a real oldie, not debated lately) and 3. Toto toilets? Oh, and do we have to file first or can we just build the thing.

Posted by: slopefarm at January 15, 2009 12:50 PM

Montrose is all over the 'Brooklyn Rental Market More Stable Than Manhattan' thread.

I smell a name change....
Montrose****5 QOTD****Morris.

I wish she'd go shovel that snow already!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 12:51 PM

I think MM just put took her shot at getting a 5th QOTD in the thread about brownstone apartment rentals. I set up the football (the topic) for her to kick it between the goal posts.

You know, about 3 QOTD's have come about because of topics that I initiated. Maybe that is my role in life: QOTD facilitator and Loser Lounge owner. Kind akin to that old expression: "Always the bridesmaid, never the bride".

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 12:53 PM

slope...I say we do it Brooklyn style...no permits, all cash.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 12:55 PM

Some people are just never satisfied with 4. So sorry benson. Ribbon cutting- why Mr. B of course (if you pander enough he might give you a QOTD!)

QOTD's, NYT's- how big can an ego get? Just remember benson, karma. One day MM will fall from the exalted heights of fame on the icy steps of infamy.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 15, 2009 1:01 PM

DIBS,

I'm willing to own such a place, but not set foot in it. Our "seller" tried to go that route with our house and the results weren't pretty. The wiring alone could have burned the house down. Unclear whether that would have been before or after the first floor collapsed and the tenants landed in the cellar, and before or after the wind blew all the new siding off the front of the house. Hope you are suggesting an owner's and not a flipper's idea of an all cash, no filing job.

Posted by: slopefarm at January 15, 2009 1:02 PM

Well, slope, if we're going to include articles that some have been quoted in, I'll send in my press kit.
Should we include TV credits also?

'P.S. Let us know when you hit the MSM, BRG. (I realize I've just invited some smugness from you know who -- we'll see if he notices).'
Showing my ignorance here, but what the heck is MSM? And I don't know who 'you know who' you're referring to. explain please.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 1:03 PM

slope...there's a BIG difference between doing something without permits and not adhering to code. Most contractors actually know the code....PVC vs. cast iron, BX vs. Romex, etc, etc, etc

When I was looking, the majority of the renovations had been done without any permits ever filed. Most were "done to code."

So yes, that would be an owner's version

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 15, 2009 1:06 PM

Then fine, I will set foot in it too. Agree that code is the key. Also that if you find something that needs fixing for safety reasons, you fix it rather than hide it. You know I was teasing you, but I have been through the real deal. Fortunately, we hadn't closed.

Posted by: slopefarm at January 15, 2009 1:14 PM

MSM= Mainstream Media.

It's a term that right wing nuts like me use.

Posted by: benson at January 15, 2009 1:15 PM

"Icy steps of infamy". That was good, bxgrl.

Benson, what can I say? Some are the anchors, no, pillars of society, shouldering the load. Others step on your shoulders, put their boot in your face, and climb over you, reaching ever higher.

As one of my cats, whose life is a living hell, always tells me by the expression on his face, "Life, in its sucky suckitude, sucks." Your turn will come.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 15, 2009 1:20 PM

Thanks, Benson (MSM)
Slope, than I answered your question with my 1:03pm post ;-)
Yes, to MSM (Obviously not 'stoner related though)
My press kit will be delivered to the 'farm'

Smugness from ‘you know who’ would have / should have happened yesterday, but as evident he is....ah, never mind, draw your own conclusions.

MM – stop it! QOTD is in the bag. GO shovel already! We'll call you when your quote is posted.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 1:34 PM

Get to it!!
And it better look like this:

BRG, I owe you an apology for my callous use of the phrase 'you're beginning to sound as stupid as Gravis in the Rental market thread...and that's pretty stupid.' You by no means are stupid. You are a very intelligent person with great insight. Your posts are always so informative and very entertaining. Are you a genius, because you sure sound like one.

Sure you make spelling errors, but the truth is that I'm jealous that your posts are so much better than mine and that you've received the well deserved honor of QOTD twice.
Yes, I made a spelling error and proceeded to humiliate you, insisting that it was you that misspelled the word. I am such a buffoon. Can you ever forgive me? I am truly humbled by your presence.

holy crap, this just happened a few minutes ago!

NEW YORK CITY -- A US Airways flight headed to Charlotte has crashed into the Hudson River in New York City.

Flight 1549 left from Boston and was headed to Charlotte when it tried to divert to La Guardia Airport in New York City.

The plane landed in the Hudson River.

New York City firefighters are responding to the crash. It was not immediately clear if there were injuries.

Witness Barbara Sambriski, a researcher at The Associated Press, said, "I just thought, 'Why is it so low?' And, splash, it hit the water."

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at January 15, 2009 4:07 PM

Yes, I can see it all from my office window at the Death Star. Tons and tons of emergency vehicles on the West Side Highway and many many rescue boats. Apparently 151 passengers and all were rescued.

HOBO, send them to brownstoner@brownstoner.com...maybe he'll post them.

I'm watching it on CNN right now Rob. Seems like everyone got off the plane safely.

Email Mr. B - Hoboken.

Unfortate about the plane crash...wow.
Are they reporting if everyone OK?
I'm not near a TV and don't want to look on line for fear of seeing some images...I can't stomach things like this.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 4:24 PM

just hope there are no complications due to "exposure"

A few are still arriving at some building in midtown where the passengers are being taken. But it sounds like everyone got out ok. Reports are a little scattered.

The photo on the home page of the NYT is frightening - lots of people standing on the wings waiting to be rescued [from earlier].

The plane looks like it's sinking now - very slowly - as it drifts southward.

CNN is saying that the plane hit a flock of birds/geese.

It's not gory BRG - scary but not gory.

Okay, brought myself to look on-line

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123205240502786899.html

'Ms. Brown says the plane, an Airbus 320, may have been hit by birds.'

huh?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 4:34 PM

everyone on the plane is fine. remarkable.

someone on the QOTD thread wrote that this was like the golden globes, with everyone patting everyone on the back.
I want to be Clint Eastwood and I want to know who wants to be Salma Hayek?

Posted by: sam at January 15, 2009 6:37 PM

I want to be Angelina Jolie....sans the kids.

"Victorian vs. Edwardian trim (a real oldie, not debated lately)"

Slopefarm, what is this debate about? Do tell!

Also, what happened after you bought your place? Did you fix the electrical and prevent the first floor from collapsing? I am waiting on the edge of my seat for your reply...well, I am going to take the subway home first. (We are still about two days away from contract on a house in similar condition and my lawyer's and mother's comments are giving me an anxiety attack.)

Posted by: mopar at January 15, 2009 6:40 PM

Mopar, yippy, I'm excited for you. You're buying the hovel after all!
I'll send my congrat's after all goes through. Let's us know when it happens.

Are you going to do all the work yourself? Do a reno blog, please.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 6:43 PM

The problem with being Angelina Jolie is that you are married, for the time being, to Brad.

Posted by: sam at January 15, 2009 6:49 PM

I picked Angelina Jolie, because I resemble her ;-)
Nothing wrong with Brad. He's soft on the eyes.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 6:56 PM

If I picked one my favorite all time actresses, I'd be dead....Bette Davis.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 15, 2009 7:00 PM

I resemble Clint Eastwood especially as he looked in the movie "Fistful of Dollars".

Posted by: sam at January 15, 2009 7:10 PM

Mopar,

A while back, pre-what, when this was really more about houses, people used to debate painting their trim white (a travesty to some) versus natural stain. I think Victorian is natural and Edwardian is white trim. That's an oversimplification, but it used to get people agitated here.

As for our house story, if you want the real deal, you need to buy me a few rounds first. Ended up doing a complete reno, and we are enjoying our home. I've let parts of our story out in bits and pieces here, but the whole thing is closer to a book.

Posted by: slopefarm at January 15, 2009 9:58 PM

Thanks, BTG, Slope. BRG, we pray we won't be doing the plumbing, electrical, and foundation work ourselves. That would be really scary. Just uncovering all that *natural* Victorian wood. Slope, I hope I get to buy you a few rounds soon...when's our next party?
