Hey folks;
Just to let you know (for whomever may care) that I've decided that I will not be leaving this forum. I realized that it would be dumb for me to reward a dirty street fighter by self-censoring myself. Moreover, I enjoy my role here as the resident Robo-Republican, as Montrose has called me.
Posted by: benson at January 14, 2009 9:51 AM
This place needs more Republicans.

what's up your butt today benson. did i miss something yesterday?

What happened Benson? I clearly wasn't reading all the threads yesterday. What's up?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 9:57 AM
Yeah, I don't even remember this one and I was here all day yesterday.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 9:59 AM
some of the posters yesterday were less than nice let us say.
As for today, 4 words: "global warming my ass".
Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 10:03 AM
Which thread?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 10:05 AM
On global warming....
Kyoto - Arctic ice reported back to 1979
levels. Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent
months, global sea ice levels now equal those
seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also
drew to a close. Ice levels had been tracking
lower throughout much of 2008, but rapidly
recovered over the past four months. In fact,
the rate of increase from September onward is
the fastest rate of change on record, either
upwards or downwards. This data is being
reported by the University of Illinois's Arctic
Climate Research Center, and is derived from
satellite observations of the Northern and
Southern hemisphere polar regions.
Each year, millions of square kilometers of sea
ice melt and refreeze. However, the mean ice
anomaly -- defined as the seasonally-adjusted
difference between the current value and the
average from 1979-2000, varies much more
slowly. That anomaly now stands at just under
zero, a value identical to one recorded at the
end of 1979, the year satellite record-keeping
began. Earlier this year, predictions were rife
that the North Pole could melt entirely in 2008.
Instead, the Arctic ice saw a substantial
recovery.
Researchers had expected the newer sea ice,
which is thinner, to be less resilient and melt
easier. Instead, the thinner ice had less snow
cover to insulate it from the bitterly cold air,
and therefore grew much faster than expected.
We have attached the article where this data
was initially reported, as well as the University
of Illinois’s Arctic Climate Research Centers
letter of response to that article:

Folks;
It wasn't yesterday, it happened on Monday. If you click on my name, you can see the posts.
Sam;
One of the best comments I've heard coming out of this financial debacle was something along the line of "Top-paid PhD statistical modelers, with 10's of millions of dollars at their disposal, and 100's of billions of dollars on the line, didn't foresee this disaster coming in their model. Yet, we are told with certainty by climate scientists, with much more meager statitical modelling resources, that Earth's temperature is definitely rising".
Well put!!!
I used to do statistical modelling of processes in my engineering work, and I couldn't have said it better myself. All models are as good as the assumptions you put into them, and anyone who claims they prove anything with certainty doesn't know what they're talking about.

I agreed with your assessment of Dinkins.

DIBS, ny blogs dont allow republicans, youre banished. just ask anyone on curbed, gothamist, gawker, etc. youre lucky you switched, rather than be a log cabin repub, your life has been spared. its for that very reason (not only that) that i switched from democrat this year.

I did vote for change though. I don't frequent all those other left wing pseudo hipster blogs. I probably should though for the comic relief. There are some pretty pathetic people on them.

benson, I'm glad you decided to stay.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 10:39 AM
I just read the 'binge drinking' thread. I don't know why I'm surprised, but it was shocking to see that thread devolve into a racial argument. I tend to ride a line as a black woman who experiences racism quite often - I don't understand why race always has to be an issue, but at the same time I know why it's always an issue. Benson, I am glad to see that you have not allowed folks to chase you off. I appreciate reading your comments on a variety of subjects. You are one of few thoughtful posters who contribute greatly to this site. I'll be looking forward to further comments from you.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 14, 2009 10:39 AM
Benson, we may not agree on a lot of points, but I, for one, am glad you are around to argue with. Preaching to the choir has its perks, but being able to spell out one's position and opinions is much more interesting when someone intelligent is opposing you. You rarely make it personal, and I enjoy some good verbal fencing on issues of the day.
I make it my mission to bring you over from the Dark Side, my friend. Soon you will be bathed in Light and Truth.

Well.. Well.. Lookie here! Citibank is swirling the bowl!
Breaking Up the Citi
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189581950479655.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
"This is a turnaround from a couple of months ago, when Citi CEO Vikram Pandit said he "loved" Smith Barney's business and saw no reason to break up the bank. But Citi has since taken $45 billion in taxpayer cash and secured a $249 billion taxpayer guarantee for lousy assets on its balance sheet. The bank is due to report fourth-quarter results next week, and the latest losses could total $10 billion, so Mr. Pandit no longer has the luxury of indulging Citi's old ambitions if he wants to keep his job."
Now can we acknowledge a collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble??!!

Off to a meeting!

the market turns and the what is back, i love it... Hate to say it but i predicted this would happen in my 2009 predictions. I wrote that we would start turning down once we hit the new year. Well its here and we started the turn down on the 3rd...

No Dave, I'm not going to go back and forth on the collapse of the Mutant Asset bubble. The MAB has a hole in it and is spewing radiation all over the financial landscape!
Bank of America and Citibank are ready to take dirt naps! The investors know the Government can not save them..
We will break critical support levels this week and away she goes. 2009 is going to be a very bad year...

Hey benson- let me join the crowd of "don't you dare leave us!" We've all gone through so much, including rabid trolls and those of us who stuck it out have made a kind of e-family/community here and we can bicker and snipe, but you belong here just as much as anyone. (doesn't mean I won't argue with you - ha ha ha, like that'll ever happen), but if you're going to argue with someone,it's so much more interesting when that someone is intelligent. (And by the way- the fact that you like Palin has really lowered my respect for you :-). Moose-killer Lover!!
Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 11:32 AM
There's a lot of talk out there that the government is going to cut Madoff a deal if he turns on the advisors who funneled clients' money to him. Afterall, if Madoff has no money left then the focus is going to turn towards anyone who is culpable and does have money left.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 11:35 AM
Listen Benson, I know it can get a little rough around here - but hang in with us. We need the opposing views - even if I hate 'em! [You, you, you - Palin-liker!]
On another note - where's my good buddy ol Poley these days?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 11:41 AM
Ah, so this is why Madoff is still lolling about in his luxury digs, sleeping on Frette sheets, and eating gourmet food when he should be pacing his cell, sleeping on a thin hard mattress and eating gruel.
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 11:45 AM
Al Gore can bite my frozen shorts.
Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 11:45 AM
Ohhhhhhhh nooooooooooo! You mentioned Poley! Now I have to say, if he weren't so off the wall nuts with some of his -er- social analysis- he would have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It's nice to have a resident joker- what! wait- is he serious when he posts that stuff?
Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 11:47 AM
LOL - his 'social analysis' - oh, is that what that is?! I was so sure it was just crap! Wait, I think I agreed with him about something...once!

This place needs more trannies.
Posted by: billyboomer at January 14, 2009 11:58 AM
DIBS,
There will of course be justified outrage if what you said pans out, but it will be interesting to see how hard the advisors kicked the tires before placing money with Madoff. Just because Madoff should rot in jail doesn't mean that others' fiduciary (and statutory, perhaps) duties aren't in play. I have no involvement in this personally or professionally, but I am really curious how it plays out.
Posted by: slopefarm at January 14, 2009 12:05 PM
Global warming isn't just predicated on statistics. Biologists, geologists, environmental scientists all have input. While I think the eco-alarmists overstate their case, there are enough scientists and enough research to give them the ammunition they need. If nothing else, Gore brought a lot of attention to environmental issues and they are issues that can't be ignored. I have a friend who doesn't believe in global warming at all. I found that really shocking- sweeping years of scientific research off the table because she doesn't believe in science.
Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 12:07 PM
"so we miss him?"
Si, polemicist.
Well, 'missing' might be a tad bit extreme! Let's just say 'noticed' he wasn't around!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 12:07 PM
slope....I think all of those advisors have a responsibility in the matter. There were many advisors who told clients to stay away after doing no more than cursory analysis. One of my colleagues here advised one of her clients years ago that it smelled fishy.
It's also bringing up the unfortunate issue of the ability or lack thereof of the boards of directors for these schools, endowmwnts and charities to make fiduciary decision.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 12:10 PM
Dave --
Agreed.
As for the boards, it is a tricky question in my mind, legally and practically, and I do not have an answer. If a board entrusts a qualified professional to provide investment advice, how far must they go in kicking the tires on that advice to exercise their fiduciary duties?
Posted by: slopefarm at January 14, 2009 12:16 PM
cobblehiller, your knowledge of your 'hood is needed in the food and drink roundup thread.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:17 PM
slopefarm, I think, if nothing else, the Boards should have ensured the investments were diversified, which would have saved many individuals, companies and charities from being totally wiped out from Madoff.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:20 PM
Absolutely agree with Biff and I think Dave made the same point about a week ago.

I think I may have written once that you were getting on my nerves, but I was having a difficult morning and I forget the context. Folks;
Something dawned on me last evening, when I took a look at the threads. In case you didn't see it, this "Benson" person on the scene, bursts into threads and tries to cut others a new one. But others hold their own, however.
It suddenly dawned on me who "Benson" is. Rather than give you my opinion, let's take a look at some facts:
-clearly, 'Benson' has been carefully reading this site for a period of time.
-'Benson' is a fairly good writer, though there is a whiff of "sermonizing" in his posts that we've seen in another writer's pieces...''What' you ask? Although, 'what' posts I'm referencing are mostly incoherent gibberish, but I think that's just 'Benson's' way to foil us.
-A very significant person of the Brownstoner community is suddenly not around, with no explanation. 'Benson' disappeared for a day as did this person....hhhhmmmm.....'What' is his name??
-I noticed that 'Benson' is becoming friendlier. Could it be to throw us, 'What' does this all mean?
So, who is 'Benson'? You decide for yourself....
Bayridgegirl News: We report...You decide
Have you figured out 'What' I'm trying to say!?!
Benson, seriously, glad you're sticking around, my Fedder Loving 'Friend'
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 14, 2009 1:43 PM
sam--I mean I never had any capital to begin with, not that I was prescient enough to know that our financial system was a ponzi scheme. Not having had any large sums of money means I don't have anything to grieve about now.

Is anyone going to any bar Sunday for the games????
I actually went to Essence (cor of Atlantic & Troy)two weekends ago on Sunday but they didn't open until 5:00. It was a pretty decent place with just a few older guys there. I suspect it gets a younger crowd Fridays and Saturdays though. There's an area for a band to set up. Food was a cut above ordinary bar food as well.
I think you know where this place is MM. I think I mentioned it once before in asking anyone if they've ever been there.

Slopefarm: It seemed that anyone who voiced conservative concerns about investments over the last 5+ years was labled the equivalent of a "bitter renter."
Posted by: BH76 at January 14, 2009 2:42 PM
BRG;
Very good! You've got even myself questioning my identity!!! "What" the heck is going on?!?!!?
I sure hope that "The What" shows up at the next party, so that I can prove that he and I are not the same person.
Bxgrl;
I'm really not against the idea of continuing to clean up and care for our environment (well, with the possible exception of moose-killing). My arguments against Al Gore and his crowd are two fold:
-they are "absolutists". If you read alot of their material, it comes close to that of a doomsday preachers: "The End is Near". Like those preachers, they argue that this issue is "uber-alles",and any other consideration, be it economic, social or even religious, has no part to play.
-Like these doomsday preachers, they predict with certainty the "date", be it the end of the world, ot the second coming of the messiah. That was my point above. Any one who tells you that they've run a statistical model and it points to a definitive conclusion is selling snake-oil, no matter how sophisticated the message or product (mortgage securities or the rise in the Earth's temperature).
Posted by: benson at January 14, 2009 3:11 PM
BH76, I think you are way off the point DIBS, Biff and I were discussing. The issue isn't investments in general. It's that some people who should know better put all their eggs in Madoff's basket. That's not about being skeptical of the market, that is failing to do due diligence about a particualr investmetn (think buying a house without an inspection or a title search) and the failure to keep investments diversified, either of which would have spared someone the problems of having been defrauded by Madoff.
The "bitter renters" -- not that I have ever seriously used the term -- are the ones that ahve been skeptical of the value of owning a home. If you invested all your money with Madoff 5+ yers ago and let it ride, you'd have nothing. If you bought a brownstone 5+ years ago, you would have your home and probably some equity, even today, and maybe some rental income to boot. Apples and oranges, no?
Posted by: slopefarm at January 14, 2009 3:12 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:23 PM
DIBS, So will they ever find out where he's stashed his cash? Is he going to get away with this and be found sitting in his beach house on some exotic island in 10 years?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 3:26 PM
cobblehiller, except for some jewelry and a little cash, the money is gone. That is a Ponzi scheme. earlier investors make money while later investors get nothing. Think Social Security for instance.
Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 3:29 PM
If he has stashed cash offshore they'll never get at it. If he did then why did he turn himself in and not just flee. He's 70...there may not be all that much time left.

I think that is clear from most of my comments.

What, I don't care if people think I'm gay. I am into old houses. And I once said that I would dress up as Maude if Biff had his "All in the Family" party.
Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 3:49 PM
Why cobblehiller- thank you! Haven't you ever wondered why they call them kit kat bars??
benson- I can agree with you on that. Sometimes I think number crunchers are the witchdoctors of today, without the fun music and herbs. when I studied statistics in college my professors always made sure to remind us that statistics is about probabilities, not guaranteed outcomes.
Mostly it's all about marketing- if there is anything (I'm going to sound like a real nutjob here so be forewarned) I think is the most destructive concept to come down the pike ( outside of nukes and bio/chem weapons) is marketing. Why? Because when marketing products or ideas or concepts becomes the main way to sway people to you, it becomes a matter of selling you the Brooklyn Bridge- and not about giving you the facts and information you need. It's the mental equivalent of a sound byte- just enough truth to make it seem right, and catchy too! But mostly very very manipulative. Marketing is all about selling you something, whether or not its good, or you have all the facts- its like a big game.
Maybe that's why it seems like the news has nothing but pundits, and every issue boils down to its headlines- we want everything fast and simple. Wouldn't it be nice if life was like that?
That's pretty much how I see Gore and the alarmists. Not that I disbelieve what they are saying- I do think global warming and pollution are real issues. But I hate being manipulated into hysteria to sell me on the reality.
That was like the Republicans tossing out the word "socialist" in order to make us run screaming from the room. I love how we all toss around the words liberal and conservative, giving them the most extreme connotations- yet the majority of people are varying combinations of both. Extremism is easier to grasp than subtle differences or similarities.

I loved Maude. She still stands as one of the strongest, funniest female characters in TV history. sam, I hope you're tall enough to fill Bea Arthur's shoes. I want to play Adrienne Barbeau's boyfriend if we can find someone who looks like her circa 1975! Va-va-va-voom!

"bxgrl...that was truly worthy of QOTD, not that drivel from BRG."
Oh, man, we are never, I mean, never, going to hear the end of it.
Posted by: slopefarm at January 14, 2009 4:10 PM
no, never
Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 4:15 PM
Biff, see, this is why I thought you were a 60 something year old. All your references are 20+ years old! What's up with that?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 4:16 PM
cobblehiller, I'm just lost in the past, like the kid from the Wonder Years. I sure hope you're saying you thought I was a 60 something year old BEFORE you met me and not AFTER!!
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 4:19 PM
cobblehiller...I thought the same thing before I met him

""What, I don't care if people think I'm gay. I am into old houses. And I once said that I would dress up as Maude if Biff had his "All in the Family" party.""
Everyone I hope you don't think that was me making this quote: ""Come out of the closet, my friend."
Benson, are you implying sam is gay? Careful, we know what happens to people when they get mislabeled around here :-)

DIBS Hijacked my scree name by using underscores. Please check the profile and thank you.
I know thing are a little boring these days without me and I'm not going to engage the Asshats. The Mutant Asset Bubble is leaking radiation all over the financial landscape!
I notice that the energy level has fallen here at Brownstoner. Jon is going all of the posting (He's broke and cannot afford to pay people) and the post are stuck in the MAB. I think we need to move forward to 2009 and beyond. How are we going to manage the aftermath of the collapse! There is where we need to be..
The What (The real one)
Someday this war is gonna end....

Hi What, I knew it wasn't you! [The underscores are the giveaway.]
How are we going to manage? What is it you see right now and for the next 3-6 months?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 4:32 PM
I didn't hijack your assinine screen name.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 4:41 PM
I can't see any difference between one "return of the what" and the other.
best to have a nice three-letter name.
Posted by: sam at January 14, 2009 4:56 PM
'best to have a nice three-letter name.'
or a name with a three-letter acronym.

"I think you know where this place is MM. I think I mentioned it once before in asking anyone if they've ever been there." DIBS
And as I mentioned at the time, what makes you think I am familiar with every dive bar in Bed Stuy? I've never been there, I'm not the bar crawing type. My tenant, however......
Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 14, 2009 5:33 PM
Abused tenant alert!!I protest the accusation that tenants are alcoholic barflies! (Humpf! Some of us prefer to swill at home in refined settings).
Posted by: bxgrl at January 14, 2009 5:36 PM
And I heard that topless dancer was MM (over at Club Wildfire). Further clarification on the QOTD thread.

I'll be at Solomon's Porch tonight in case you need a little "pick me up."
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 5:40 PM
Bxgrl...by the sounds of your horrid living conditions under the rule of your torturous slumlord, it's no wonder you wallow your suffering with cheap spirits.
Chin up, it's going to snow this weekend!

I'm opening a new bar: " Loser's Lounge", for those of us who haven't received the QOTD.

I might have to leave my refined setting for that, benson. I think we should all support benson in his new endeavor- even if he hasn't made QOTD. Will you serve swill (all I can afford at the moment).
Too true BRG-too true. Why just a few moments ago the dreaded landlord , moustache atwirl, crashed through the door demanding ..oh g-d, how can I say this?- VEGETABLES. (and you wonder why I fantasize about kit kats.)
