TGIF!!!!!

Folks;
Something dawned on me last evening, when I took a look at the "Biggest Sales Last Week" thread. In case you didn't see it, the "new" person on the scene, Miss Chiff, bursts onto the thread and tried to cut Miss Muffet a new one. Muffie held her own, however.
It suddenly dawned on me who "Miss Chiff" is. Rather than give you my opinion, let's take a look at some facts:
-clearly, Miss Chiff has been carefully reading this site for a period of time. In her recent dress-down of Miss Muffet and The What, she compiles certain insider facts gathered over a period of time.
-Miss Chiff is a fairly good writer, though there is a whiff of "sermonizing" in her posts that we've seen in another writer's pieces.
-In her dress-down of The What and Miss Muffet, one gets the feeling that Miss Chiff is finally free to express her opinions of them. In other words, one gets the feeling that previously she was rstrained "in some way" from freely expressing her opinion of them, but under her "Miss Chiff" handle, not so.
-A very significant person of the Brownstoner community is suddenly not around, with no explanation.
-I noticd that she is friendly with Biff, DIBS, and BRG - people she might have met at the recent Brownstoner party.
So, who is "Miss Chiff"? You decide for yourself....
"Benson News: We report...You decide"

oh it's definitely a sock puppet (or ghostie) fer sure.

Leave Miss Chiff alone!!!
;-)
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 10:42 AM
Benson...stop thinking so hard.
Don't you have Fedder inventory to go count?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 10:46 AM
BRG;
No thinking involved at all....it is obvious who it is.
Posted by: benson at January 9, 2009 10:47 AM
What recent Brownstoner party? Why wasn't I invited? :-)
Posted by: iluvclintonhill at January 9, 2009 10:48 AM
Benson, I have my theory and hinted at it early on in some of my posts ;-)
luv...everyone was invited, maybe you didn't see the threads about it.
Maybe, there will be another one, if the What gives us a date of doom and gloom and some Asshat organizes it. The last Asshat who organized it did an OK job.
Maybe the newest member 'Miss Chiff' can organize it!!

I'm not interested in the sexual advances of any of the female posters nor those of most of the males either.
That said, anyone interested in mischief is potentially a great drinking buddy.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 10:53 AM
I can't figure it out! Who is Miss Chiff??
Posted by: 11217 at January 9, 2009 10:54 AM
I guess I haven't been around long enough to have any idea who you are talking about. I can't tell girls from boys here. Um, is it TownHouseLady? I'm guessing she's a girl. I'm pretty sure BayRidgeGirl is a girl, but then Miss Chiff is being friendly to her which means she's either switching screen names, or it's not her. Give me some hints.
Posted by: DarkStar at January 9, 2009 10:56 AM
11217;
One further hint: take a look at who is NOT writing articles on Brownstoner.
Posted by: benson at January 9, 2009 10:57 AM
"That said, anyone interested in mischief is potentially a great drinking buddy."
I might be interested in Miss Chiff...she did want to kiss me!
I hope she's a brunette and exotic looking!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 10:59 AM
I found out who it is! And DIBS, I hope you aren't interested in getting intimate with Miss Chiff.

Polemicist hasn't been commenting, but I don't think it's him...
Posted by: 11217 at January 9, 2009 11:10 AM
Benson: Now I know you are secretly in love with me. (blush) Don't be ashamed. It is all good.
I think it is funny that even I am trying to figure out who Benson is talking about. Good move, Benson.
I like that you all are talking about me. It gets me all excited. Keep going.
Yes, I am a very good drinking buddy.
Nwo whre iz Biff 2 rite the wrods 2 "I Kissed a Girl"?

Benson - is Miss Chiff I Disagree? The intrigue, the intrigue!
Posted by: Miss Muffett at January 9, 2009 11:12 AM
Maybe Benson is Miss Chiff. The plot thickens!
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 11:14 AM
Is she realted to Miss Misdemeanor?
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 11:16 AM
Missy Misdemeanor
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 11:16 AM
"Benson: Now I know you are secretly in love with me. (blush) Don't be ashamed. It is all good."
Miss Chiff - I'm going to tell you again to Back the F*ck up...cause Benson was secretly in love with me before you came along.
Now, if you are an exotic looking brunette, I will forgive you (and kiss you)!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 11:21 AM
My dog is exotic looking (it has mange) and the hair that it does have is mostly brunette looking. Would you kiss her?
Posted by: DarkStar at January 9, 2009 11:24 AM
I have to get back to work. I will check in later.
BRG: I love it when you treat me roughly.
Have a great day, Benson.
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 9, 2009 11:25 AM
It's not me, and I doubt it's wasder (unless Wasder's got a serious Jeckyll/Hyde thing going on). cobblehiller? But c's pretty generous to what sometimes, so doubtful. Can someone post a list of remaining suspects so we can start crossing them off?
Posted by: slopefarm at January 9, 2009 11:28 AM
I love a good bitch fight!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 11:28 AM
"My dog is exotic looking (it has mange) and the hair that it does have is mostly brunette looking. Would you kiss her?"
Yes, Darkstar...I'd kiss her. I like Bitches.
Miss Chiff: I roughly want to treat you.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 11:29 AM
The What hasn't been posting alot lately!

I think BRG is the What from that post!!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 11:33 AM
Miss Chiff = Bold Type Guest
Posted by: 11217 at January 9, 2009 11:33 AM
"It's not me, and I doubt it's wasder (unless Wasder's got a serious Jeckyll/Hyde thing going on)."
I know Hyde's name was Henry but what was Jekyll's first name?
Miss Chiff is not be, but I got dibs on DIBS.
Posted by: wasder at January 9, 2009 11:34 AM
Meant to say "Miss Chiff is not me."
Posted by: wasder at January 9, 2009 11:35 AM
slopefarm, I think benson is implying it's Lisa, as guessed by Rob. Even though benson includes me in his deduction, I really don't know who it is, although I did notice yesterday Lisa hasn't been around.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 11:35 AM
I'm Bold Type Guest 11217; and, I'm not Miss Chiff although I do get into some now and then!!!! :(
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 11:37 AM
"Miss Chiff = Bold Type Guest"
Bold Type Guest = Miss Chiff
I doubt it. I have my hunch, ever since she came along. And if she wants me to protect her and her identity, she better step it up.
Kisses to you, Miss Chiff.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 11:39 AM
I was kidding about BTG.
I have no idea who Miss Chiff is.
Posted by: 11217 at January 9, 2009 11:55 AM
In all seriousness, is Lisa any less anonymous than Miss Chiff as far as an actual identity is concerned? Any of us could be anyone.
Posted by: DarkStar at January 9, 2009 12:37 PM
Darkstar;
Lisa is not anonymous. She is a free-lance writer who frequently left her web-site address on this site, in which her full identity is revealed. Miss Chiff, on the other hand.....
Posted by: benson at January 9, 2009 12:48 PM
BRG: A big sloppy wet one for you too. Are you considering exposing me? In public? You kinky little girl.
Robby Benson: I love you. Marry me.
I am the Walrus. (ko ko katcho)
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 9, 2009 1:01 PM
The disappearing 'Lisa' was at the 'get together', so she's a real person, well, that's what she portrayed herself to be :)
BTW - Mr. B, where is Lisa?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 1:06 PM
Miss Chiff, should I take you on the Brooklyn Bridge and expose you??
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 1:08 PM
Miss chiff is a bit of a windbag, so that's a clue.
Some of her posts are like Op Ed pieces, except not as well edited. Muffett can go on a bit too. Maybe they're the same person! omg, brownstoner's Jekyll and Hyde!!!
Posted by: sam at January 9, 2009 1:10 PM
I'm sure as hell glad no one talks about me on this site.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 1:19 PM
I think I know who it is having fallen for the same joker under a different name (like you BRG- I stepped in and told that b**tch to back off my man). Only to find out the truth and be woefully humiliated. I have an idea that you and I think its the same person.
Posted by: bxgrl at January 9, 2009 1:24 PM
Why does Benson have such a vendetta against Miss Chiff, and why is he so protective of Miss Muffet?
Posted by: DarkStar at January 9, 2009 1:32 PM
bxgrl, are you talking about Brook Lynn? Blast from the past. I remember her short but sweet posting history here.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 1:36 PM
Bxgrl...I have no idea what you're referring to regarding 'your' joker....maybe it was before I got here...would love to hear about it though.
Let's not reveal this joker yet ;-)
Dark....Benson has a vendetta against Miss Chiff, Me, Montrose and bxgrl.....hhhhhmmmmm
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 1:37 PM
Who called my name??? I haven't been on here in over a year.
I see you've got a lot more new girlfriends here, Biff.
Posted by: Brooke Lynne at January 9, 2009 1:42 PM
So does that confirm that Brooke Lynne is just an alter ego of one of us here?
Posted by: DarkStar at January 9, 2009 1:44 PM
Where'd all the faded type guests go??? They were a lot more intelligent than this crowd.
Posted by: Brooke Lynne at January 9, 2009 1:44 PM
I wish DIBS were straight. He's the most intelligent sounding of all you guys.
Posted by: Brooke Lynne at January 9, 2009 1:46 PM
Are all of Biff's girlfriends now going to come out of the woodwork?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 1:48 PM
That is too funny. But perhaps you should call yourself "Return of Brooke Lynne"
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 1:50 PM
That was me. Invented her about the same time I invented BTG but for a different reason. Biff remembers. Ancient brownstone history. I let her out once in awhile after she's "painted up her lips in rose and curled her tinted hair."
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 1:51 PM
DIBS...is she a brunette??
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 1:53 PM
She's a blonde BRG.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 1:55 PM
Yes, I remember. And I also remember the hilarity that ensued when bxgrl thought she was in a catfight with a female poster.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 1:56 PM
DAMN!!!! Not my type, then ;-)
Did you ever out her, before today?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 1:57 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 1:59 PM
Yes...but only Biff remembered who she was. This all remends me of Tokyo back in the 1980s. A bunch of British stockbrokers used to write in ridiculous letters to the editor of the Japan Times back then and they pretty much all got published. They were strated by a guy named Chris Taylor who wrote as a far right of right minister named the Revenernd Christopher M. Taylor. He would write in about things like female slavery, "Yellow cabs", colonialism and all sorts of other stuff to rile people up na dthe Japan Times was clueless that these were all phony.
His colleagues wrote under various names..
Dr. Ken Shin Ton Park (Korean...say it really fast)
Leighton Buzzard (Aussie)
Juan Lapulapu (Filipino)
Id Sittarondalot (Thai)
and various others...
Eventually all the letters to the editor were published in a book.
One of the funniest lines was "Even under the Italians, Ethiopia never starved."

Nope, sorry slopey - not me. Besides, I've been commenting - but just in the Open threads recently.
And I'm too busy alternately panicking and job hunting over here...
p.s. I think DIBS had 'outed' BTG a few times earlier.

Who do you guys think is MIA? I'm wracking my brain...maybe Miss Chiff isn't a gal?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 2:41 PM
Biff, brought up 'The curious case of Benjamin Button' in another Thread.
I saw three movies last night..that being one of them.
I recommend it. It'll make you think about your own life and not to take things for granted and treasure every moment. There are some great lines. It's 2 1/2 hours long though, so you might want to wait till it comes out on vid. I can't sit in a theater for that long.
Also saw Cadillac Records, good movie
and
Milk, which I love loved
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 2:41 PM
Slumdog Millionaire = best movie I saw in 2008.
cobblehiller, DIBS and I are awaiting the sale of 22 Remsen to see who is planning the next 'Stoner gathering. However, at this rate, it might not ever sell, so I might have to take the proverbial bull by the horns. I'm thinking maybe in Feb or March at the latest.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 2:46 PM
DIBS...are you sure...that's not it...you outed yourself, okay BTG, at 9:14pm on june 18.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 2:46 PM
Milk was awesome, BH and I saw it this past weekend - Sean Penn was amazing!
Saw Slumdog Millionaire also, was really great, too.
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 2:48 PM
"Slumdog Millionaire = best movie I saw in 2008."
On my list of must watch.
I don't go to the movies that often, maybe once a year.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 2:49 PM
Yes, BRG. That was it. I just reread it. It was really funny how people started speculating that brownstoner was over and ruined.
And then there were those who couldn't figure it out at all.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 2:51 PM
Brooke- you @##&$^%#*!!! bitch! I told you- stay away from biffy!
BRG- she's the one!! I could out her but it's more fun not too )this way I can blackmail her).

Something in BoCoCaNo???
BRG, a good dominatrix can wear her patent leather knee high boots all year long.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 2:57 PM
Bxgrl.....too late. DIBS just outed her (1:51pm), maybe he shouldn't have.
bxgrl - I wouldn't be fighting over Biff...it's so not worth it.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 2:58 PM
I have never fought with you bxgrl.
I admit I picked on Miss Muffet. And I enjoyed it.
And we now know I am in love with Robby Benson. Manhattan College grad, Robby, or are you a ramblin' wreck from Georgia Tech?
Sam: Are you trying to flirt with me? You'll have to get in line. Robby has my heart. BRG has my body. Perhaps you can have my mind - what little is left of it. Teach me how to edit!
Have a great weekend everyone. Be careful in the snow.

benson, that was hilarious!
"Something in BoCoCaNo???"

Thats where you wanna go to get away from it all
Bodies in the Penn
Tropical drink melting in your hand
Well be falling in love
To the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in BoCoCaNo
State, Schermerhorn ooo I wanna take you
To Smith, Bond come on pretty mama
Atlantic, Boreum baby why dont we go
Ooo I wanna take you down to BoCoCaNo

Quote of the Day
I remember walking from Park Slope to Pratt once, about 10 years ago. It was desolate and empty. I remember passing a huge empty red brick building on the corner of Gates and I forget what, thinking, this is a beauty, but who's gonna want to live here. Look at the neighborhood now...it's come a long way.
— by bayridgegirl in The Big Draw in Clinton Hill: Architecture

"At this rate. Miss Chiff is going to get it, before you do!"
Perhaps she already has. Perhaps Miss Chiff is Hubby!

Flattering Miss Chiff ain't gonna get you no sucky face with her BRG.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 3:26 PM
"cobblehiller, any suggestions for venues on Smith Street?"
I hate to admit this...because it makes me sound like a shut-in, but I rarely ever go out for drinks on Smith Street.
There is a back room at a restaurant that is due to open on Kane & Court - but it's not open yet, so I can't vouch for how it's set up. I really don't know where would be good for a group. [Oh g*d help me, I really am getting OLD!]

I know, the intrigue! I''m still trying to think of who has been missing lately that could be posing as Miss Chiff!
Wasder is too nice, it's not him. My guess is i_disagree.

"Biff, I liked her BoCoCaNo song. So step back, Jack"
Thank you DIBS...and I like ALL your alter egos.
Biff...STOP...with the spelling corrections!!! Should I point out some of yours...but I'm sure they don't 'outweight' mine.
Benson: Yes, I thought it was a good movie...not great but good and I did enjoy some of the lines. I thought they were well written.
"then we REALLY have some differences."
YOU think???
"Flattering Miss Chiff ain't gonna get you no sucky face with her BRG."
What will???
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 3:34 PM
I bet its SnarkSlope. Miss Chiff is a great drag name too, although the best one I ever heard was Lois Carmen Denominator.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 3:34 PM
"I''m still trying to think of who has been missing lately that could be posing as Miss Chiff!"
Why do they have to be missing? Someone can log in and out with different names.
DIBS can show anybody how to do it. He can also show them how to screw it up.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 3:36 PM
But DIBS Snark doesn't really 'do' long entries, and avoid conflicts as far as I can tell.
And I don't recall any 'hostilities' between SnarkSlope and ... well ... anyone really! Whereas I think i-disagree had some dust ups with Miss Muffett, no?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 3:38 PM
cobblehiller, I'll scout out the street one night and see what looks good, unless someone knows of another place that could squeeze us all in, preferably in one of the more discussed, convenient and desirable areas we talk about here (i.e., NOT Bay Ridge).
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 3:39 PM
"Why do they have to be missing? Someone can log in and out with different names."
Yes true, and I thought of that - but I'm trying to figure out who Benson thinks this is. And he seems to think it's a regular - female - that's MIA.
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 3:40 PM
Folks;
I think you're overlooking one of the clues:
"-In her dress-down of The What and Miss Muffet, one gets the feeling that Miss Chiff is finally free to express her opinions of them. In other words, one gets the feeling that previously she was rstrained "in some way" from freely expressing her opinion of them, but under her "Miss Chiff" handle, not so."
Posted by: benson at January 9, 2009 3:40 PM
"DIBS can show anybody how to do it. He can also show them how to screw it up"
OK...now I don't like your BoCoCaNo song anymore.
cobblehiller....I think you're overanalyzing it.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 3:41 PM
cobblehiller, I'm pretty certain benson is surmising it's lisa.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 3:42 PM
Hey Benson, give us a list of possible suspects and then we can try to deduce who you think it is!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 3:42 PM
^^^^^^OOOOPS.....SHIT!!!!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 3:44 PM
I don't remember lisa being a poster so much as stoner's assistant. Her comments were usually pretty brief. But you all know best. I don't usually even post on the open thread.
Happy weekend everyone!

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 3:46 PM
"preferably in one of the more discussed, convenient and desirable areas we talk about here (i.e., NOT Bay Ridge)."
By the sounds of that, you don't want to come to Bay Ridge. I was going to invite you and Miss Chiff over...my glass pumps are polished.

"cobblehiller....I think you're overanalyzing it."
Oh poo DIBS, I love a little intrigue! This is fun! Aren't you curious?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 3:50 PM

Biff, Floyd on Atlantic is pretty big. An option?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 3:52 PM
Floyd is a good choice. We just don't want to do Brazen Head.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 3:54 PM
Really Snark??
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 3:58 PM
“BRG, how about thinking before you type? I realize it's a novel concept for you.”
Oh, Biff, I do think before I type…..and during….and after.
I’ve never written a novel, though. I’m actually writing something now, I have one more paragraph. I need to put the finishing touches on it and then it’s off to be considered.
How about you stop antagonizing me?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 4:00 PM
cobblehiller, I was actually thinking about Floyd. It's convenient to all the trains, and most importantly, walkable for you and me! And it has bocce. But it might be a little too rough and tumble for some of the Highfalutin' Elitists around here.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 4:00 PM
I am crying right now. (Tears of joy.) This is a wonderful open thread. Of course. It is about me!

Lois Carmen Denominator? DIBS, I didn't think Car Talk was your speed. Or did you come up with it independently? (If you really don't know what I mean, listen to the end of the show when they credit their "staff" -- nothing but terrible name puns. For example, statistician = Marge Ianoverra. I think they've used your Lois line once or twice.)

XOXO to you, Miss Chiff.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 4:11 PM
slope....it was the name used by a guy in the Chi Town Squares back in the late 80s. They were a group that did drag dancing for parties to raise money for AIDS. We had them come in and dance at our wedding in 1990...but that's another story for another day.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 4:12 PM
I'm not cleared either, but it's not me.
No one's guessed Nokilissa.
Posted by: slopefarm at January 9, 2009 4:13 PM
Also slope, what"s Car Talk?? If its a show about cars it would be my speed....but it's one i've never heard of. Doesn't sound like its about Cars given the goofy credits.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 9, 2009 4:13 PM
I still confess.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at January 9, 2009 4:15 PM

Snark, I don't think it's you - not that you aren't funny enough to be Miss Chiff!
What about 11217?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 4:19 PM
I thought it might be Nokilissa, but she's never been afraid to speak her mind, so why would she do it now? It's obviously BRG: nobody else ever complimented BRG until Miss Chiff mysteriously came along.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 4:19 PM
I don't listen to the radio up here. That said, I've rebuilt a few engines, welded, painted and restored a bunch of cars believe it or not. That's my main hobby. I've got a great setup down in PA.
I watch Speed and Spike on Sunday mornings. I like vintage stuff...nothing newer than the 60s and mostly like the 30s.
I always liked mopar's login, but I've never been a mopar man.
You?

Miss Chiff isn't funny enough to be Snark.
11217 isn't funny enough to be Miss Chiff.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 4:20 PM
Dave,
It's an NPR talk show with two goofy MIT grads who run an auto shop. They answer callers' questions about their cars, and use the conversations as a basis for banter. Locally, it is on late Saturday morning on WNYC. DOn't know when it is on in Philly.
Posted by: slopefarm at January 9, 2009 4:25 PM
"It's obviously BRG: nobody else ever complimented BRG until Miss Chiff mysteriously came along."
Biff..are you having fun? Really, are you?
I'm subtly telling you that I am beyond......oh, never mind!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 4:26 PM
"I like vintage stuff" - DIBS. I do too. That's why I love you, papi. (Smooch!)
Not C'hiller or C'hiler, 11217, Rob or Noki. And I am still not snark. Snarkie, do you want me to go away? BRG will kick your @$$ if I leave.
Slow dancing. A little bump and grind perhaps?

Miss Chiff: So do you admit to being a 'fake poster' as Benson suspects?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 4:31 PM
Dave, I'm not a big car person (the house has been enough of a preoccupation as of late), but NPR is kind of a default in our wagon, so if I am running errands on Saturday I catch the show.
Day's ending Benson, give us a choice of three, let everyone vote, then reveal the answer. Brownstoner's own To Tell the Truth.
Posted by: slopefarm at January 9, 2009 4:31 PM
cobble,
If I'm in the car, or in the kitchen. I don't go out of my way to listen, but I do like the show. You're not going to tell me Miss Chiff is Paula Poundstone, are you?

sam, I am not Nokilissa. Though she is a doll. So how do I impress you, sam? 3-word replies? That's no fun.
I am not Biff. Although I enjoy my Canadian bacon now and then, Biff's a piece of meat that is a little too gamey for me.

Posted by: slopefarm at January 9, 2009 4:44 PM
Ha! Nope, not going to tell you that Slope!
But I'm so curious now! On two counts!
1. Who does Benson think Miss Chiff is.
2. And is this the right guess!
This is highly entertaining, 3 names Benson! We have about 30 minutes before the board 'drops dead' and everyone heads out for the evening!
Miss Chiff: How long have you been reading/commenting here - in the old name?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 9, 2009 4:45 PM
I am, BRG? You know best mami.
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 9, 2009 4:46 PM
cobblehiller, the identity has already been admitted and is obvious. The only reason it's taken us so long to figure out is because one of benson's clues, "Miss Chiff is a fairly good writer", threw us all off!
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 4:48 PM
Miss Chiff has far too much time on her hands.

No, I am not Biff, bxgrl. I don't do death stars.
slopefarm, that is a no to all of them.
Perhaps I should be insulted that no one has guessed. Perhaps it is good that I changed my name.
Think it over, kids, and if BRG allows me, I will confess. Though I do like being a mystery.
Oh, and not wasder, or any of his minions.

You guys realize, that Mr. B could put an end to this mystery right now!

I'm not so sure Biff. Although she's devilish enough to do it!

Like I said, Bamboozled Real Good. Devilish enough indeed.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 9, 2009 5:04 PM
Let's see Biff...according to your theory...
Miss Chiff posted at 4:58 and I posted at 4:59 can it be done?
Can a poster post than log out and log back in under another name and and post again in ONE minute.
YES...it can...but I'm not admitting to anything. Just saying it's 'doable'

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 9, 2009 5:12 PM
I'm rather disappointed no one thinks it's me. Oh well.
I did have an alter ego for a while. I wanted it to be terse, sarcastic, and in your face. It was for about a week, and then it was no fun anymore. I may bring it back.
When times are tough, when there is no hope to be found...when the city is looking for a superhero, then will (name inserted here) appear!
I spent much too much time reading comics during those formative years. Speaking of which, does anyone remember when Cap and Bucky were thawed out as racist, right wing John Birchers? Talk about messing with legends. (Only a true comic book nut would have any idea of what I'm talking about.) Leaving now.....

Posted by: Woofer Plantation at January 9, 2009 11:13 PM
Why sigh, Noki?
RMJr. - oh dear, hmmm. Well, all I can say is that I haven't noticed this, but I will pay attention.
WP, Really doubt that Benson is Miss Chiff, any other guesses?
Which posters that were posting quite a bit seemed to have stopped recently? (I'm still workin gon this from Benson's angle.)
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 10, 2009 8:38 AM
Mrs. Limestone?
The sigh was because I went through TWO HUNDRED and THIRTY THREE posts last night because I got sucked into the madness, couldn't believe how riveting Benson had managed to make it at the start of this open thread, it played out at times like an episode of science mystery theater or a fabulously bumbling game of clue, and yet...and yet...
Nothin'. We got nothin'.
Posted by: Nokilissa at January 10, 2009 9:33 AM
Wow, folks have a lot of time on their hands! (and all because of an attack on me, right?)
Posted by: Miss Muffett at January 10, 2009 11:09 AM
Noki: I know! Nuthin'! Here I am running back to my computer to see if there is any NEW information! I'm hooked!
Mrs. Limestone...interesting! May have to read her recent posts for clues.
Miss Muffett: Watch it, or we're going to start suspecting you and Benson are in cahoots!
C'mon Benson...give us something! A clue, another hint...pretty please!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 10, 2009 11:58 AM
I'm with Nokillissa...I just took the time to read all these posts and no one is going to tell who it is? NO FAIR! I wanna know! I haven't been on here long enough to know who is missing and I certainly don't know enough of people's writing styles (outside of the 'What's ranting and antics) to finger anyone. Could someone please just let it out for the remaining 'inquiring minds' who can't figure it out on their own? AAAAGGHHHH!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 10, 2009 12:01 PM
Hi folks;
WOW!!! When I wrote my original post, I had no idea that it would attract such interest. Who knew that a geeky engineer could write something "riveting"?
Well, let me make a few statements at this point:
-Miss Chiff is definitely not me. I've been posting on Brownstoner for some time, and have always had one handle: Benson. Even when registration wasn't required, I always identified myself as Benson.
-About half way though the thread, Miss Chiff denied that she is the person I originally thought she was. This shook my confidence a bit. However, upon further thought, I am still fairly sure she is who I originally thought she is. Moreover, if my hunch is correct, it will become apparent very soon who Miss Chiff is.
-I am glad to see that others, looking at the record of her posts, agree that Miss Chiff is a fairly good write (Biff: take note). This is the key clue, in my mind.
Stay tuned!! This is fun, isn't it?
Posted by: benson at January 10, 2009 1:32 PM
PS:
Miss Muffet and I are not in cahoots. In fact, we are on apposing sides in the long-running battle over the direction of housing prices. She is the captain of "Team Bear", and I am the assistant captain of "Team Bull" (after Sebb).
Posted by: benson at January 10, 2009 1:35 PM
Fantastic! [Slopey - we can make a list to work off now!]
LOL! Tee-hee-tee-hee, this is fun!
Question: If someone guesses correctly - will you acknowledge it Benson?
Miss Chiff: If we 'tag' you, will you come clean?
Damn, I have to run out for awhile, but I'll be back to work on this NEW information!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 10, 2009 2:23 PM
BENSON'S LIST OF PRIME SUSPECTS!
From Miss Chiff's posts yesterday and others...working backwards. 'She' says she is not:
Biff
bxgrl
wasder
Nokilissa
wine lover
slopefarm
BHO (and all his log ins)
cornerbodega
z
amzi
shahn
C'hiller or C'hiler
11217
Rob
sebb
DIBS
BRG
i_disagree
snarkslope
lisa
brownstoner
benson (though I wish I could be)
sam
THL
Montrose
Miss Muffet
Ok, I think I weeded out the duplicates and got everyone! Let me know if I missed anyone.
Based on that list, I'm guessing it's one of these:
bxgrl
Nokilissa
DIBS
BRG
Biff
i_disagree
THL
Montrose [hmm, for some reason, you're still on my list!]
Miss Muffet
sebb
[unlikely]
11217
wine lover
[Roughly in that order - How am I doing Benson? Hot/cold?]
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 10, 2009 5:47 PM
cobblehiller, you ruled out lisa? benson, my (uneducated) guesses include:
Lisa
bxgirl
BRG
Miss Muffet
and for shits and grins, the What
Is it one of those?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 10, 2009 5:55 PM
The What! OMG, I would laugh myself silly! That would be tooo good!
I just kind of doubt it's Lisa, that said, I really can't rule anyone on the list out. I'm just guessing.
Benson, comments/hints/clues, please!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 10, 2009 8:18 PM
It can only be Lisa.
Posted by: gab at January 10, 2009 10:19 PM
BENSON!!! WHERE ARE YOU???? HELP A SISTER OUT!!!! Curiosity is seriously killing me over here. You don't want a death on your hands, do you? :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 10, 2009 10:36 PM
Cobblehiller, trust me, it's not me.
First of all, I'm self employed. I spend way too much time on Brownstoner as Montrose, God help me if I start in as Miss Chiff (great name, btw). My next move would have to be asking for donations to pay my bills.
More importantly, I fully admit I don't know enough about housing markets, pricing, and real estate trends to go full tilt bull/bear with anyone, especially Miss Muffet and some others here.
Cross my name off the list. Sorry.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 11, 2009 12:53 AM
Not exactly related, but since this if the first open thread I've ever read, and it discusses commenter identities, is johnife still posting on this blog? I used to enjoy his comments. His and NOP's.
Posted by: bk14 at January 11, 2009 3:26 AM
Hi folks;
I feel like this is my "15 minutes of (blog) fame".
InsertSnappyNameHere: your short list is correct. Keep at it! You don't want me to just name the person, do you? It's more fun if you keep using your power of deduction! By the way, I love your handle.
bk14: NOP is still definitely posting. I saw that he posted a couple of times this past week. I "think" johnife is still around, but am not sure.
Posted by: benson at January 11, 2009 8:16 AM
Ok, Montrose - but I did like the idea that you had 'gone rogue' and decided to give a few people an unrestrained piece of your mind! [Or maybe that's just what I would like to do!]
johnife is around - I'm pretty sure I saw a comment in the Forum recently.
Ok, after Snappy put the shred of doubt in my mind last night...I'm putting Lisa back on my list.
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 9:12 AM
Wooohooo! I got it down to five possibilities! Well, four...even I don't fully believe it could be 'What.' Though that would be a hoot! Cobblehiller, help me here!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 11, 2009 12:29 PM
I recall Miss Chiff posting earlier in the week about someone's slate mantel in the Forum, noting that s/he is the owner of an Eastlake style home dating from the end of the last century. I believe bxgirl rents, and *all* of us(even those like myself who rarely post) know that La Madame Tuffet can only covet a mantel, thus leaving BRG (do they have mantels in Bay Ridge), the What and Lisa (each very doubtful) from InsertSnappyNameHere's list. I think it is none of the above. Rather, it's a going on middle aged male. So I immediately thought Biff - especially given Miss Chiff's clever handle, but he's denied it. Whomever you are, Miss Chiff, I am your number one fan, and wish you all the best in keeping La Madame Tuffet pontifications in check. Thank you very much for the community service.
Posted by: Woofer Plantation at January 11, 2009 12:46 PM
LOL, just reading my earlier post - end of the last century would be a few years ago! I think Miss (or Mister more accurately) Chiff's fireplace was from the 1890's! He's probably watching football right now, so don't expect to hear back from him for a while - go Giants!
Posted by: Woofer Plantation at January 11, 2009 1:00 PM
Biff lives in Brooklyn Heights, but I have no idea what kind of house he lives, must assume Brownstone.
Ok, here's the house post: I have something similar, though a little less ornate. My house dates from the 1890's. My house is in the Eastlake style, so I am not surprised by the similarities. Luckly this one wasn't painted over a million times like mine was.
So this person is an owner - that crosses BRG & bxgrl - Muffett's renting her Tuffett - so were down to Lisa.
What is HIGHLY unlikey - but I will laugh so hard, I will pee in my pants if it is!
I dunno, I read through Lisa's posts and it just doesn't sound like her. I can't remember if she said where she lives...
I still think it sounds more like 11217.
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 1:14 PM
Woofer, how can it be a man? Benson said my short list is correct and, aside from the What, it includes no males. Based on your knowledge of who rents and who owns, I'm going to have to go with Lisa. But, the conspiracy portion of my brain is saying that Miss Chiff may have claimed an 1890's mantle and Eastlake style home as her own but in fact does not own it. How better to disguise your identity? Simply describe a house you know very well, perhaps that of a friend or relative, or if you are in the business, a home you have worked on - and pass it off as your own.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 11, 2009 1:22 PM
I OFFICIALLY GIVE UP!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 1:24 PM
I just re-read Benson's clues. He continues to emphasize that Miss Chiff is a good writer. Could it really be the What? What is not know for stringing together a sentence that is free of severe grammatical and spelling errors (no offense, What, just noting the facts). Possibly he disguises himself as Miss Chiff and writes very carefully and utilizes spell check so as not to give away his true identity? It's a reach, I know, but I'm so stumped right now I can hear my brain cells popping!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 11, 2009 1:47 PM
Hi ISNH - it very well could be a man, as Benson is only guessing like the rest of us. I'm pretty certain it is a male poster. In that vein, am also not convinced Miss Muffett is a woman, but that's just me (some of "her" posts are just too over the top, almost fake, in their prudishness and pretentiousness - like a guy just having a laugh at people thinking he's a [very annoying] mother with kids)!
Posted by: Woofer Plantation at January 11, 2009 1:52 PM
I'm going to say this about What - he's more educated/brighter than I think most people give him credit for. I think he's a lousy typist most days, but if you read some of his calmer posts - the spelling and vocabulary is there. It would be an interesting move to call What a homeless guy as a distraction from the get-go! [See Miss Chiff's very first post in the profile.]
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 2:00 PM
OK, I spent so much time avoiding work on Friday that I had to come to work today to get stuff done. I am missing the Giants game, but I am convinced that 1. The Giants will win and 2. If I actually watch the game, the Giants might lose. If you don't have blue panties, DIBS, I'll gladly let you borrow a pair.
None of you have guessed my old name. Yet. Yes, if you guess, I will tell.
This is like a soap opera. I just wish I had a killer body and could sleep with all the hotties, get married and divorced and married and divorced, lose my memory, have an evil twin and have a child that goes from 3 to 21 in 2 seasons.
I do own a house in the eastlake style and I have more than 1 fireplace. I own a 3 story, red brick, Federalist-style home. It is a lot of work to get it up to speed and I have a long way to go, but I love it and would never trade it for the world.
Brownstoner could tell you who I am but I hope he doesn't.
So much drama I am afraid the truth would be a big disappointment!
Now ...... should we end this this week, or shall we just let the old me die - no great loss it seems - and allow Miss Chiff to claim her rightful place among the greats of Brownstoner?!
OK, back to work.....
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 11, 2009 2:04 PM
After this I give up ... Denton.

"None of you have guessed my old name. Yet. Yes, if you guess, I will tell."
Thanks Miss Chiff!
Ok, Benson, the lists we have are toast! Back to the starting line!
Two questions:
Did you comment often, or just here and there?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 2:17 PM
I'm now going with BRG. Put a fork in me, I'm done.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 11, 2009 2:18 PM
Not Denton. Not I haz.
(God, I have to go back to work!)
I would post from time to time. Wasn't a fan of the what or miss muffet under the old name. Benson didn't want me dead under the old name either.
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 11, 2009 2:26 PM
Miss Chiff;
OK, I retract my standing request to you!! I'll take you at your word that you are not the person I previously thought you were. My "drop dead" comment was really directed at that person, because I thought she was going to start up with me.
I went through my previous posts to see who I interacted with in the past that is no longer around. I've come up with three persons:
East River
Rehab
Crimson
Well, how about it? Your identity, and my inquiry about it, has generated one of the longest threads in Brownstoner history!
By the way, for us ignorant ones, what is the eastlake style?
Posted by: benson at January 11, 2009 4:05 PM
Miss Chiff;
Forgot to write one more (and in fact this is my new top suspect): lurker in the mist. Me and LITM would go at it sometimes.
Posted by: benson at January 11, 2009 4:08 PM
Benson: If it wasn't for you and Miss Muffet, my meteoric rise to fame would never have happened. Thank you!
Have we overshadowed DIBS and the What?! I think we have.
No worries about wanting me dead. I hope we can continue that thread. I don't think you and I had any issues under my old name. You are one testy Republican though. I hope I can continue to pick at that scab.
I am not LITM, East River, Rehab or Crimson. I am not Lotharoftheclintonhillpeople, Putnamdenizen or Chaka for that matter either. (We seem to be sucking everyone into this, aren't we!)
I am feeling like a bit of a loser that one knows who I was.
From what I can gather, eastlake was a transitional style between true Victorian and the Arts and Crafts style. I can't seem to find too much on the style to tell you what would make it unique, though it seems to be closer to Victorian than A&C in my book. I showed a picture of my house to a former co-worker who is familiar with these things and she told me the moldings around my windows and pocket doors indicated eastlake. (The floral designs in the wood work - and in my fireplaces - were the clue for her.)
Let the longest thread continue.
You having fun, Mr. B? I know YOU know who I am since you can see teh e-mail address I use for both names.
Sorry for the long post, sam.

Ah, yes, my old buddy lurker!
What about 11233? Hmm.
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 4:40 PM
Hmmmm. I am not feeling so bad after all, C'hiller.
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 11, 2009 4:50 PM
Miss Chiff: Would you tell us which general area of Brooklyn you live in?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 4:52 PM
Did I guess!? OMG, nevermind! Forget I said it! The mystery can't be over!
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 11, 2009 4:54 PM
Where do I live? Here is a clue: The King, 1969.
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 11, 2009 5:00 PM
Miss Chiff;
Yes, I can sometimes be testy. I started off in a confrontational mode with Montrose and Bxgrl, but now we're on-line buddies (who still don't agree about much).
I'm racking my brains out to think of some of the handles we haven't seen for a while. How about these?
-wasn't there a bkgrl? Or something like that?
-BrooklynNative
-Brooklyn4life
-GWbrubaker
-Slappy
I'm really scraping here...
Yes, yours has been the most auspicious debut since The What suddenly burst on the scene.
Posted by: benson at January 11, 2009 6:21 PM
Benson: That is a no to all of your names.
I am trying not to get too jealous of your relationship with bxgrl and Montrose. Then again, I have BRG, so I am doing just fine!
I can understand being testy. I sometimes like to let it fly here just to get things going and blow off some steam.
Speaking of blowing .....
Eagles won. Ugh! I would tell you that you suck, DIBS, but I think that is common knowledge already. (Aye, papi!)
Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 11, 2009 6:29 PM
For anyone who cares, Charles Eastlake was an English architect and style maven who wrote "Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and other Details" in 1868. He espoused William Morris' Arts and Crafts Movement, which called for a return to simpler, less ornate, handmade furniture, crafts, and living. As I'm sure you know, both America and England were in the midst of the Victorian middle class boom which gave us an overabundence of fru-fru, highly carved furniture, ornate wallpaper, yards of voluminous draperies and the like. Over on this side of the pond, we were building our beloved brownstones, and churning out mass produced moulding, trim, mantles, mirrors, furniture, and tchotckes. Mr. Eastlake's book was a splash of cold water for those who wanted a simpler look.
What is known in America as "Eastlake style" can be characterized by flat, simple surfaces, like wood, or stone, with geometric, incised carvings in simple designs. On furniture, it's sometimes called "spoon carving". The fireplace in Mopar's post is a classic example. It's usually tied in with the Aesthetic Movement of the 1870's - 1880's, with its fascination with Japanese and Eastern design, which fits in nicely with Eastlake sensibilities.
Ironically, they couldn't help but start to overdo it, and it didn't take long before Charles Eastlake would have plotzed to have his name attached to the excesses of the style, with gilding, and added stuff. But the style is still very popular, as it is much more quiet than High Victorian.
http://www.museum.state.il.us/muslink/art/htmls/ms_eastlake.html
Thus endeth the lesson for today.

Ok! Got it!
I thing the Miss Chaff thing is a sick joke! You let a unknown Asshat come here and suck the air out of the room. This Asshat has not done anything to prove her/him self!
BTW Miss Chaff you are on mute: You do not exist in my book and about the syntax, I don't get style points for my writings..

Sorry, What. No offense meant to you. I was just stabbing in the dark trying to solve the mystery. Now, I may regret asking this question, but what exactly do you mean by not doing "anything to prove her/his self"? How does one 'prove' oneself on this board?
Benson, Cobblehiller, any further guesses? I am out of names. I have not been on this board long enough to dredge any names out of my memory.

Sorry snappy, I'm all tapped out.
Miss Chiff is likely lying anyway.

I guess all the brownstoners there ever was has been mentioned! Sigh. Miss Chiff, care to enlighten us?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 11, 2009 9:07 PM
Snappy;
I've gone through all the names I know too. Perhaps tomorrow Bxgrl might think of some, as she is a long-time poster. Maybe Noklissa also, as Miss Chiff seems to like her.
Miss Chiff;
One final question for you: did you attend the Brownstoner party last October under your old handle?
Posted by: benson at January 11, 2009 9:08 PM
You all are nuts!!
Racking your brains trying to figure this out.
Let it be...let Miss Chiff have her fun. Once 'she' is exposed the thrills will be over!!
Miss Chiff, you're getting sloppy...unless that is, you want the exposure. Hang on Girl!! Ride it out a little bit longer. Give these people some more of your witty posts.

So, then, where is Lisa???? The next mystery to be solved.
