At a time when all of us need some hope, I think this is well worth viewing. It's under 2 minutes.

I watched it....this is what I posted underr last night's photo thread...
Watched part of this last night...they seemed more mature than what I was expecting. I've never watched this show before and don't even find it entertaining but it was fas better than the immature drama we see on most of the others. What was the worst one, Big brother?
I was impressed by the maturity of the ex-soldier (naturally) and JD, the gay hispanic guy. Even the transgendered girl was pretty level headed.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 10:14 AM
that's probably cuz they cast an old cast this time. i think the youngest is 22 and some are 24. most past seasons were 18-21.

did they show any nabe shots or did they just stay inside their loft?
Posted by: bowl of dicks at January 8, 2009 10:21 AM
never saw any interesting nabe shots...definitely didn't see any brownstones. We're going to have to wait for This Old House for that!!!
Now there's a show I'm really looking forward to. Unfortunately none of the workers are going to compare to JD but such is life!!!!

What will it be now that all the Real Worlders have exited?
Is it condos, loft space, office space?
Posted by: gemini10 at January 8, 2009 10:43 AM
hey ive always wanted to explore red hook actually. is it within walking distance from park slope? i know no trains go there, and i don't do buses, so i'd have to walk.

I watched it online last night and I'm almost ashamed to say I enjoyed it (guilty pleasure!) I even cried at one point, but I always cry when I hear people's coming-out stories and struggles (reminds me of my own - AWFUL). I think I heard the black girl say she was 20. Anywho, they do seem to be trying to get back to their roots with real people. But I always have to question how real MTV thinks this can be when you *give* them jobs. I remember the first Real World when the folks went out and got a job on their own. Their sense of responsibility and maturity far outweighed any other season cast and they weren't all about getting drunk and laid. That said, this season seems like it will be at least interesting due to a variety of lifestyles in the house. It seemed to me that the Metrosexual Mormon may be questioning his sexuality, but I suppose it's too early to tell. And yes, I'll be watching future episodes to find out!! Don't Hate Me!!!

LOVE Red Hook
ummmmm you would have to take the Bus Rob
I beleive the bus that runs along 9th street is your best bet into Red Hook - I might be wrong
well you could walk.. - but you have to get through the Projects and factories to make it to Van Brunt Street and the water....
Posted by: gemini10 at January 8, 2009 10:55 AM
Rob, embrace that big blue and white limo that is the B77 bus and take the ride out there! Yes, you COULD walk to Red Hook, but it's a bit of a trek and in this weather, not advisable.

Went to Buttermilk Channel last night. Recommend it; great little spot just down Court st from Frankie's 457 (our favorite neighborhood spot that's not in my neighborhood).
Solid, reasonably priced wine list buy the glass and bottle, 5 local brews on tap. nice atmosphere.
food was quite good. Split the cheese plate—good selection of cheeses with awesome local honey and these concord grapes that were pickled or something, super tasty. also came with popovers!
I had the winter pasta dish with sweet potatoes, black olives and rosemary butter and the wife to be had the buttermilk fried chicken w/ cheddar waffle & an amazing maple/molasses syrup.
We also split a endive and kale salad with soft-boiled eggs and anchovy dressing.

What does everyone think about the BART shooting and the riots in Oakland? Surprised this is not getting more media play. It is getting coverage in the NY Times, but I'm surprised there in not more coverage on CNN. Not everyday that there are riots in America.

I worked on a design show and the on-camera 'handymen' were hot!
They often took their shirts off while working; lifting lumber, sawing wood, hammering drywall.
DIBS, you would have been very happy with one, although he was straight, he was a sight. He wasn't Latino, but sure looked it....prrrrrrrrrrr.
Having worked on a few TV shows, I can tell you 'reality' TV is not so reality. It's all manipulated, enough said. It's all in the editing. To get a 44 minute episode, they shoot for one week. You can deduce what they include in the final cut...the drama.
I just came back from a gorgeous house on Central Park, let me find the real estate link to it.

eta, and BRG thank you for that tidbit from the department of DUH

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 8, 2009 11:20 AM
yep, rob, use that unlimited. go to the corner of 5th avenue and 9th street, wait for the B77 and enjoy!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at January 8, 2009 11:28 AM
Oh, Rob, you young boy, DUH your unlimited will work on the buses.
Get to red hook!
A couple of years ago, a photographer friend who had never been to Brooklyn wanted to go to red hook and photograph it. Hubby and I took him there. We snuck into some private waterfront property so he can get better shots. The dogs were loose, I never ran so fast in my life.
Have a good time in Red Hook.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 11:29 AM
hmm thanks. i think ill go visit this sunday. so what else is there to do in red hook?

Fairway and IKEA...
Posted by: GHB at January 8, 2009 11:53 AM
Rob, I enjoy just walking along the waterfront and buying lunch at Fairway and eating it outside, although that might be a bit chilly, now. I guess that shows how much excitement I can stand.
You could always go to Ikea, or wander around to various bars. Red Hook is kind of spread out, when on foot, so be prepared to walk, or hop on and off the bus.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 8, 2009 11:53 AM
rob - red hook
http://brooklynbased.net/everything/red-hook-day-trip/
this was on brownstoner a while ago too.
Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 8, 2009 11:53 AM
Rob, you think there's something to do in Red Hook?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I go for the industrial architecture...I love it!! You'll see lots of great warehouse buildings, train tracks going into buildings, a few train cars on the waterfront, they are owned by someone, I forget who.
http://amny.image2.trb.com/amnynews/media/photo/2006-12/26764479.jpg
^^^^If the gates are open to this property, go in and walk around the building. I forget what street this is on. Does anybody remember or know?
The property is open to the public. However, don't try to go into the building, they will stop you (yes, I try to sneak into anything). There's a glass blowing studio on the ground floor that is really cool and open to the public. Go in and watch them blow glass, can't remember the name.
Have fun and say hi to Lady Liberty!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 12:05 PM
Rob and all;
If you really want to get a slice of "old-time" Red Hook and Brooklyn, have a drink in the bar at the VFW post on Ven Brunt Street off Sullivan St. I was born in Red Hook (a stone's throw away from Fairway) and my dad still spends alot of his time there.
The VFW bar is open to the public. There is a cast of colorful old-time characters there. They're a bit tough (as was Red Hook in the old days) but their bark is worse than their bite.

Per cwh - Oakland:

Rob, you can also take the F to Smith Ninth and walk - but you better have a little map with you and bundle yourself up if you haven't done that walk before. It's a bit of a hike from there.
The 61 Bus - which you can get on Atlantic Ave. goes to Red Hook.

Okay, I went to this house this morning...NO, I'm not looking to buy it.
This isn't in Brooklyn but mid 90's & CPW.
http://www.brownharrisstevens.com/detail.aspx?id=596507
But it is gorgeous, if I do say so myself ;-)
The renovation is top notch. The pictures don't do the house justice and I wish they had more pics on the site escpecially of the kitchen and baths which are to die for.
Check out the floor plan. Look at the Third Floor Master Bedroom Floor Thru - Now that's the way it's done, people! Noki, take notes.
Every bedroom has a bathroom.
Can you say wine cellar AND elevator!
Granted no back yard (very little 5' space behind space), but the roof deck with views of Central Park is hooked up high style.
8m....some brooklyn heights real estate looks overpriced in comparison.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 1:32 PM
Rob when you are in RH this sunday don't forget to visit Steves Key Lime Pie shop. some seriously deec pie! (especially the mini frozen choc covered key lime pies on sticks.)
Posted by: bowl of dicks at January 8, 2009 1:35 PM
BRG....Why are the floorplans so much more detailed for a Harlem house than for Brooklyn ones!!!!????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 1:38 PM
BRG, I worked on a couple of episodes of a design show, too. It was great, and I really enjoyed it. Getting up at 4am was the worst part, and the deadlines were horrific. Needless to say, everything that could possibly go wrong usually did, and it was a miracle we got the projects done in time for the reveal. The never on camera tech and production guys were hot. They were also really nice.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 8, 2009 1:38 PM
Re: BRG's Manhattan pad - Why didn't they take some photos of the kitchen, baths, master suite? The shots they have are about as unimpressive and nondescript as possible. $8 mill, you can't take more pictures? The floor plan was the most impressive part of the listing.
Dave, I hope you weren't referring to this as Harlem, which starts at 110th Street?
Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 8, 2009 1:48 PM
"8m....some brooklyn heights real estate looks overpriced in comparison."
BRG, the bet was it would go for $5.65MM or more, not $8MM. That's a bit of a difference.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 8, 2009 1:49 PM
So why were you at this house today BRG? Work related?
Don't you find it a little jarring that the staircase wood doesn't match the darker wood parquet floor? It looks weird to me. Maybe it's not so glaring in person?
Posted by: cobblehiller at January 8, 2009 1:54 PM
DIBS, what can I say, the person who did the plans is very detail oriented :-)
This house just went through a major $$$$ renovation.
Yes, they def. need better pics, cause the house is gorgeous...GORGEOUS! The only thing skimped on were the pendant light fixtures assuming that the owners will upgrade those to their taste.
The plans are nice, aren't they?
Biff, 22 remsen is listed for 7.3m, just saying for a CPW house for 8m...it's looking like you're going to lose it on Remsen.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 2:04 PM
I already admitted there's a good chance I could lose the bet on 22 Remsen, especially given the continued economic collapse since the original bet, but the asking price is irrelevant. Maybe the CPW house is $2MM underpriced. Who knows?
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 8, 2009 2:10 PM
Montrose, we should trade stories about design shows. I have doozies.
The schedules are grueling indeed, but I thrive on it. Everything does go wrong, but in the end it all comes together.
I've pulled all nighters.
We've had lost luggage with wardrobe and a house model, that didn't show up till weeks after shooting ended.
Temper tantrums, meltdowns, etc. etc.
Good times indeed!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 2:13 PM
The CPW house is a great, roomy house. My only disappointment is that it is missing its stoop. Stoops are
important on big vertical houses like this. How much would a stoop cost to put back? $80,000? I guess it depends on the ironwork.
Posted by: sam at January 8, 2009 2:15 PM
BRG nice house, with even nicer plans ;)
I want to put a stoop on it and a parlor floor entrance. The outside looks off.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 8, 2009 2:22 PM
"I've pulled all nighters."
I'll bet you have!
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 8, 2009 2:23 PM
BRG, all nighters were de regeur, here too. It was great, however, and like any situation where people have to pull together, work very closely, and with time constraints, everyone got it done. We were more low budget, no models. Lots of sawdust and plaster dust.
Pay was good, they feed you, you work like a dog. Good times indeed!
Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 8, 2009 2:29 PM
"I've pulled all nighters."
"I'll bet you have!"
I am Subtly letting you.....
Biff, re: CPW and Remsen, just bringing it up to compare costs, maybe Remsen is way overpriced. Maybe, I want to see you lose a bet. I want to see you go down...even if it's by DIBS' doing.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 8, 2009 2:44 PM
I have a feeling you'll be going down and then we'll find out you're all wet.
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 8, 2009 2:51 PM
MM...once you pass Zabar's it's all Harlem. :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 8, 2009 2:55 PM
"I am Subtly letting you....."
Holy, that should have been.
I am subtly TELLING you....
Why would I be going down, I don't have any bets with anyone on here?!?
