Happy New Year to all my fellow 'Stoners. A friend of mine gave me this book. Anyone who remembers the original from their own childhood (or has recently read it to their own rugrats) might find it particularly amusing.

Eagles will whip the Giants asses again. Just like last time.

Welcome back Biff. We've been talking about you lately.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 10:20 AM

Thanks Montrose. Good to be back. I realize this is "just a blog", but it does feel in a way like I'm coming back to say hi to some friends.

DIBS, thanks. I hope you had a marvelous holiday. I would ask what specifically you were talking about, but I'm afraid. Alas, ignorance is bliss.

is anyone excited for the premiere of mtv's real world brooklyn tonight? hahahah

quote:
Brooklyn Keeps it Real —MTV's Real World: Red Hook'd & Lovin' It! premieres at 10 p.m. tonight, and the Times doesn't quite buy the show's portrayal of Brooklyn: "The show introduces cast members in different spots all over Brooklyn — Brooklyn Heights, Coney Island — as if it were a single neighborhood spackled with pizza and Junior’s cheesecake rather than a place of varied neighbors. The fantasy is that the yuppies never invaded, and the $7 million brownstones and $25-a-pound wild salmon don’t exist. As Chet explains when he lands in the borough, speaking just under the Brooklyn Bridge: 'Brooklyn is usually spoken of as more of a place you don't want to end up.' He is worried he might be shot. Some intervention would have helped him realize that there’s little chance of that outside the River Cafe." [NYT]

hopefully it's better than that new stupid show Bromance :-/

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 11:11 AM

Just back from San Francisco and now bemoaning the food in Brooklyn!

Randonly picking new restaurants, I ate better in SF than 7 years in Brooklyn (the old lots-of-good-places-but-none-great here.) Fresh veggies, good brunches, great coffee (when can you say that about any brunch place here?) And a fusion sushi-Latin place called Sangha was to die for. Prices about the same.

Even a croissant at SFO was better than almost anything in PS except Sweet Melissas.

Oh well, Brooklyn has its compensations.

Posted by: sam at January 7, 2009 11:14 AM

Happy New Year to all. I have a question for you guys. My sister just purchased a cute home but the home had no kitchen. What happened is she purchased a short sale in which the home was being renovated and the only thing that wasn't finished is the kitchen. She is looking to spend 20k on it and I was curious as to where she could get good kitchen cabinets for a under 10 k. Ikea and Home depot are two but anyone know of any other place. She would like to go with a shaker style but Ikea doesn't offer it in wood. Any help would be appreciated.

wasder, hello my friend. Are you getting any sleep these days? How's Baby Brownstoner?

This baby has been night and day easier than my first. I am unsure how much is the natural disposition of the child (heretofore known as "Anna Claire Wasder") and how much has to do with our greater competence and confidence as parents, but this baby has not kept us up nor freaked us out nearly as much as our first, who we love dearly. It has been a real pleasure this holiday all of us just hunkering down here in the house and getting to know each other as a family. Never been more glad to have bought this house than right now. And my office is in so now I have this groovy little Wasder compound that I never have to leave except by choice.

Thanks for asking.

wasder, thanks for the update. I recall someone once posting here that if you did a search on buyer's remorse, you would have a million hits. I'm glad you're one of those who feels just as happy, if not more, after your purchase than you did before it.

Rob, I had to look up some other memorable quotes from Heathers. Here are a few favorites:

* Grow up Heather, bulimia is so '87.
* If you were happy every day of your life, you wouldn't be a human being; you'd be a game show host.
* I love my dead, gay son.

-----
Heather Duke: Veronica, you look like Hell.
Veronica Sawyer: Yeah, I just got back.
-----
Let's take a look at some of the homosexual artifacts I dug up to plant at the scene. Alright, got an issue of Stud Puppy . . .
Veronica Sawyer: Great.
Jason "J.D." Dean: . . . a candy dish, Joan Crawford postcard, got, let's see, some mascara. Alright, now here's the one perfecto thing I picked up: mineral water.
Veronica Sawyer: Oh, come on, a lot of people drink mineral water. It's come a long way.
Jason "J.D." Dean: Yeah, but this is Ohio. I mean, if you don't have a brewski in your hand, you might as well be wearing a dress.
-----
Veronica Sawyer: This may seem like a really stupid question.
Jason "J.D." Dean: There are no stupid questions.
Veronica Sawyer: You inherit five million dollars the same day aliens land on the Earth and say they're going to blow it up in two days. What do you do?
Jason "J.D." Dean: That's the stupidest question I've ever heard.
-----
Veronica Sawyer: I'm gonna have to send my S.A.T. scores to San Quentin instead of Stanford.
-----
Veronica Sawyer: I can't believe it. I just killed my best friend.
Jason "J.D." Dean: And, your worst enemy.
Veronica Sawyer: Same difference.
-----
Veronica Sawyer: Heather told me she teaches people real life. She said, "Real life sucks losers dry. If you wanna fu** with the eagles, you have to learn to fly." I said, "So, you teach people how to spread their wings and fly?" She said, "Yes." I said, "You're beautiful."

Giants Defending Super Bowl Champions. Eagles missed playoffs.

When was that Dave?

Oh while I'm here the Unemployment Phone hotlines are crashing because of the overwhelming amounts of people being laid off.

Here this is something to suck down.

U.S. Economy: Companies Cut Payrolls at Faster Pace

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601068&sid=a1AcrBP3.r.I&refer=home

Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Reports issued two days before the release of U.S. jobless data showed private employers cut payrolls at a faster pace in December, threatening to send the unemployment rate to levels unseen in a quarter century.

25 years ago Asshat Hill was a very very bad place..

Companies cut an estimated 693,000 jobs in December, the most since ADP Employer Services began its gauge based on payroll data in 2001. Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said firings announced by U.S. employers rose 275 percent last month from December 2007, to 166,348.

Lets see- if my tenant get laid off the who is going to help me with my mortgage payment?? Ohh man..

Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, said in a conference call that about 2 million more jobs will be lost in 2009, for a total of more than 4 million in the recession.

“In the last several months, the job losses have spread very aggressively into the services economy,” he said.

What??!! We cannot sell pieces of paper to one another??? There goes that "Service Economy" crap. Hold on to your nut sacks 2009 is going to be rough, right Dave?

If I spent several years in the real estate business, then left (let's say because I suffered from a serious mental illness), then went to work for my sister in a multi-national bank, spent my entire time compalaining about the very industries that paid my salary, made comments on a web site about other people's rectums while living in my grandmother's house rent-free well into my 40's, would that make me the biggest loser on Brownstoner?

I am currently living for the fact that I can watch the entire inauguration - because I'm not working! It can't come soon enough!

What, if you have a 'golden ticket' - you have to GO!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 7, 2009 12:49 PM

Hey, thanks! Now to get the old resume back in shape. Aaaarrrrggggghhhh!!!!!! I'm unemployed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gasp!...gasp!....... hic...

Posted by: bxgrl at January 7, 2009 12:54 PM

First of all Happy new year Cobblehiller and I hope you find employment!

"What, if you have a 'golden ticket' - you have to GO!"

I will be wondering around DC with rest of the knuckleheads! DC is going to be a nightmare.

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: Return of The What at January 7, 2009 12:55 PM

Yes, I can see how all the creative types in Brownstoner country would be attracted to a person who created the ultimate slogan: "Change You Can Believe In"....

.....and then stocks his cabinet with Clinton retreads, and keeps Bush's Secretary of Defense (after promising to end the war in Iraq).

A triumph of marketing!!! The man is a genius.

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 12:55 PM

BRG...now that would be a loser!!!

I guess you didn't see the one about you What so I'll repost it...

Dave: I have a serious quesiton for you ....

Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 7, 2009 12:17 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 12:59 PM

lol i told a collection agency to *F* off a little while ago and that i will pay them when i get it and to stop haranguing me at my job. u have to be really firm with those jerks.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 7, 2009 1:06 PM

It's illegal for them to harangue at work. google your consumer rights, rob, and where to send complaints.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 7, 2009 1:13 PM

Rob, aside from all of the fraud involved here, your employer has to sign off on unemployment. No one is going to do that unless it's true. If you were collecting unemployment, which is rife with data going to the IRS, etc, while drawing an above board salary, with deductions, taxes etc, also rife with data going to the IRS, sooner or later, someone is going to notice. If they are feeling particularly vindictive, you and your employer can be fined, charged with fraud and possible prosecuted. It's a lot easier to just sent some of your salary to a savings account before you get your hands on it.

Benson, stop picking fights. The man hasn't even been sworn in yet, and people are complaining that he hasn't walked on water. I'd rather have competent retreads than incompetant newbies. We are not in the position to have a 2 year learning curve while people learn the ropes.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 7, 2009 1:13 PM

Montrose;

I think you're getting a little touchy here. This is an open thread, and I'll say what I please. I'm in marketing, and I know a marketing genius when I see one. The man based his campaign against Clinton on two points: a) she voted for the Iraq resolution and b) we don't need any more Washington insiders. The guy wins and -presto - he stocks his cabinet with Clintonites, hires Clinton as his Secretary of State (the very area he beat her up on) and keeps Bush's Secretary of State.

I'm telling you, I wish I had half his marketing savvy.

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 1:23 PM

Correction to my last post:

"keeps Bush's Secretary of Defense"

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 1:25 PM

"hires Clinton as his Secretary of State (the very area he beat her up on) and keeps Bush's Secretary of State."

Cool, we get two Secretaries of State for the price of one! Or did you mean Bush's Secretary of Defense?

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 7, 2009 1:28 PM

Ahhhh, beat me to it, benson!

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 7, 2009 1:29 PM

Considering he came out of virtually nowhere to win- yes, I'd say genius. He's also very pragmatic- I like that- and said he would try to pick the best person for the job. I'll wait to see if clinton is that- but I do admire her and hope does a great job. Most of his other decisions have been pretty much lauded, so I'll wait and see. And hope and pray too. I think he is the right person for the job, but we won't know for certain until a few years down the road.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 7, 2009 1:31 PM

Who would you rather do, Biff, Hillary or Condy???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 1:32 PM

YIKES!!!

I am SO SO sorry, DIBS. Truly! I am apologizing wholeheartedly for my 12:30pm post.

What, my post was a joke, something you clearly don't recognize. Come out from under the rock you call home and you might see the world is full of parody.

I didn't mean for my post to garner praise from the what. I rather he call me every despicable name.

"This is the greatest PWNING of an Asshat ever in the history of Brownstoner!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Are you sure, What? I think you've been 'PWNED' plenty around here in the past, from myself included!

Miss Chiff, a 'newbie' on this site...PWNED YOU in this thread!!! What an honor.

"Bayridgegirl The What salutes you and I'm very jealous that I could not come up with this."

Please don't. You should still consider us enemies.
Of course you couldn't come up with anything remotely close to this, because you're a fucktard!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 7, 2009 1:36 PM

DIBS, tough choice. I'll take Condy, although in the past I've had unmentionable dreams of Madeleine Albright.

Have you guys ever played a game....'Who would you Do (using a milder word), Marry, Kill'

Then you throw out three names.
I'll start.
Queen Elizabeth, Megan Fox, Hillary Clinton

Disclaimer: Of course the 'kill' is hypothetical. Do not sent me letters.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 7, 2009 1:43 PM

BRG...you don't know how to play that very well. Your choices are too obvious.

There's another game...you HAVE to pick one of two people to sleep with.

OK BRG, here goes...who would you rather sleep with???...Queen Elizabeth or some guy from the initial episode of The Biggest Loser???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 1:46 PM

Marty Markowitz
Sheldon Silver and
Joel Kline????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 1:48 PM

DIBS....PLAY my game.
If I was a guy.
I'd marry Queen Elizabeth, Do Megan Fox and kill Hillary.

Your game...I'd do Queen Lizzie, tie her up, blind fold her, have my way then yank the tiara from her head, sell it for cash and live the rest of my life in Southern Spain.

Next Choices please.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 7, 2009 1:52 PM

LOL Dave those biggest loser guys and surely queen elizabeth must have had some musty nether regions if you know what i mean. (did you know that in early elizabethan times they didn't have soap or deodorant!? and they wore those huge frilly dresses to sleep for days at time without taking them off because they were hard to get into?) couple that with the fact that air conditioning wasn't invented yet, you wind with a total clothes pin nose society!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at January 7, 2009 1:52 PM

Benson, you're a bit touchy here, I was actually teasing you for going back into Robo Republican mode. I guess I'll have to come up with a faux emoticon, or write WINK! whenever I tease you, since your sense of humor seems to have evaporated. Sheesh.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 7, 2009 1:53 PM

rob...we're talking about the current Queen Elizabeth!!!!

BRG....MArty, Sheldon & Joel?????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 1:55 PM

"First of all Happy new year Cobblehiller and I hope you find employment!"

Thanks What! It'll likely take awhile - I've battened down the hatches. I'm prepared for a bumpy ride.

Happy New Year to you too - if we can get through the first half of the year, I think the 2nd half should be a bit better, no?

You know What - it'll be so exciting to be in DC!

I can't take crowds, but I will be watching all day!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 7, 2009 1:55 PM

"Marty Markowitz
Sheldon Silver and
Joel Kline????"

Playing your game? I thought you said pick from TWO people, unless you're coupling Sheldon and Joel together....then my choice would be easy!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 7, 2009 1:57 PM

I hope you have a good time at the Inauguration What. Seriously.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 1:58 PM

Montrose, sorry to say, but I don't sense a tone of "teasing" in this paragraph. Anyway, all's cool.

Robo Republican? Damn straight!! Palin in 2012!!! I can see the ultimate ticket now: Palin-BxGrl in 2012!!! I'm trying to decide if Sarah should name you or BRG as Secretary of the Interior.

Besides, I'm sure McCain is working feverishly to put an end to Palin's career now!!!

Baby you just got here and if you want to see PWNING, go to the Broken Angel thread. Shahn started off just like you and now his dreams a smoldering heap. DIBS is next and he is going to wind up in "Are you pounding me now prison" for his role in the Hedge Fund where he works..

John Waters

OK Dave. Be careful you don't hurt yourself jumping off the Philly bandwagon at 4 PM Sunday. Typical Philadelphia fan - gassing up your team big time BEFORE the game, and after the Chunky Soups lose, you'll be back to hating on Donovan and booing Santa. But don't sweat it - I'll have a nice pair of green panties ready to go for slip into on Monday, dude!

Eagles play Giants at 1:00 this Sunday. Then on to the Superbowl against Baltimore.

ENY will be devastated.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 3:18 PM

As defined by Urbandictionary.com

PWNED:
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."

OR

"That team totally pwned us."

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 7, 2009 3:20 PM

Being PWNED isn't necessarily the end of the world. In fact, some might even enjoy the thought of being PWNED by a sexy, colorful dominatrix in glass pumps.

Feb. 1st....GREAT!
I can't wait to sit around with a bunch of grown-ups yelling at a Television everytime 'their' team drops the ball. I'll wait for the half time show, hoping that a breast is exposed only to watch a half dead group from the 60's standing around strumming guitars while the audience waves glow sticks.
I'll comment on how fat the players are and I'll root for the team with the nicer uniforms.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 7, 2009 3:34 PM

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand.
I knew she was gonna meet her connection,
At her feet was a footloose man.

And you can't always get what you want,
Honey, you can't always get what you want.
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, yeah,
You just might find you get what you need!

I went down to the demonstration
To get our fair share of abuse,
Singing, "We gonna vent our frustration."
If we don't we're gonna blow a fifty amp fuse.
So, I went to the Chelsea Drugstore
To get your prescription filled.
I was standing in line with my friend, Mr. Jimmy.
And man, did he look pretty ill.
We decided that we would have a soda,
My favorite flavour was cherry red.
I sing this song to my friend, Jimmy,
And he said one word to me and that was "dead."
And I said to him

And you can't always get what you want, honey.
You can't always get what you want.
You can't always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes, yeah,
You just might find you get what you need!

I saw her today at the reception.
In her glass was a bleeding man.
She was practiced at the art of deception;
I could tell by her blood-stained hands.

And you can't always get what you want, honey.
You can't always get what you want.
You can't always get what you want,
But if you try sometimes, yeah,
You just might find you get what you need!

And you can't always get what you want, honey,
You can't always get what you want,
You cant always get what you want,
But if you try sometimes, yeah,
You just might find you get what you need

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 3:34 PM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at January 7, 2009 3:34 PM

Nice Try DIBS...BUT this is more appropriate...

High heels gosh you look sexy
I'd steal a touch if you let me
I'm just dyin to kick it with you girl
Hey boo show me you're ready
Lips looking juicy like cherry
I can almost taste your flavor girl

But it seems like you're the wrong type
Dont you ever get upset girl I'd like to see you sweat
It just feels like you're too uptight
Girl you're too conservative and that ain't how I wanna live

Chorus

I wanna a freaky girl somebody just like me
Someone who understands just what a player needs
Ain't with those perfect girls that shit don't click with me
A very naughty girl that's what I need

Verse

Handcuffs can you get freaky
How far will you go to please me
Whips and chains girl are you down with that
Strange places searching for pleasure
I want you to meet me wherever
Wearing just an overcoat and hat

Or was I right you're the wrong type
You don't ever get upset I ain't never seen you sweat
It just feels like you're too uptight
Girl you're too conservative and that ain't how I wanna live

Chorus

Want a girl fi love mi up hug mi up give it to me right
Swing from me shower curtain and from mi light
Hot piece of loving cerry me right through the night
I cant take the pressure when you put pan mi haa
Well me love it when you ride pan me haa
Really love it when you climb pam me haa
Cause me know you naw go hide from me haa
Freaky girl me hipe pan it hee

Woah, what a penthouse pad! The kitchen, except for those curtains, is the best room in the place. Gotta say, I would be quite happy if I had access to the indoor pool. If I'm ever rich, there will be a pool somewhere on one of my properties. That's a must have.

Benson, someday you'll understand me. ;)

In a Palin administration, I don't want to be Sec'y of the Interior, I want to be gone! Uo into the mountains, or on an island, far, far away.

Lacy things, the wife is missin'
Didn't ask, her permission
I'm wearin' her clothes
Her silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

In the store, there's a teddy
Little straps, like spaghetti
It holds me so tight
Like handcuffs at night
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

In the office there's a guy named Melvin,
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown
He'll say, "Are you ready?" I'll say, "Whoa Man!"
"Let's wait until our wives are out of town!"

Later on, if you wanna
We can dress, like Madonna
Put on some eyeshade
And join the parade
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

Lacy things- missin'
Didn't ask- permission
Wearin' her clothes
Silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

2. I do not see Russia from my window. (I see London. I see France. I see- oh no! I don't see dave's boxer BRIEFS)
3. I would never utter the phrase, "we must progress this country."
4. I think the entire country is filled with real Americans, not just the red states.
5. I didn't get $150,000+ to spend on clothing and accessories :-(
6. I don't support bridges to nowhere or refer to myself constantly as a maverick. (I prefer to be called delusional).

And now I really must go see the brighton beach condo. If I like it I can use it as the White House North during my reign- er...term in office.

MM and Bxgrl;

It is a wonder to me why Sarah so un-nerves the folks on the coasts. It's one of the reasons I like her. I'm not talking about someone disagreeing with her policies. I'm talking about the visceral reaction she herself provokes.

I agree with Camille Paglia: Sarah Palin is the true heir of the feminist movement.

Talk about fights: I'd like to see Bxgrl and Sara in a ring! Throw in a wolf too.

DIBS...I bet you're glad to be gay now!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at January 7, 2009 4:34 PM

Dave, just when I thought the holidays were over. Now I have "walkin round in women's underwear" going through my head endlessly.

Thanks a lot, bud.

Yes, MM. I posted that one before Christmas and couldn't get it out of my head then either.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 7, 2009 4:40 PM

MM- you'll wrest that tiara from my cold, dead, royal hands.

Eeewwww, benson. You like Palin? In all honesty, why? My reaction to her is political. Had she the qualifications to be VP or Prez, she would be formidable, but her politics, her inability to speak coherently, her lack of understanding of the world we are living in today (I join her in this), her religion- no no no no no. and her enormous ego- if I were ever asked to be a VP nominee (excuse me a sec...ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...gasp...ha ha ha)I still have enough wits about me to understand why I am so not qualified. She, as she famously said, didn't even blink. It takes a huge lack of self-knowledge to do that.

I totally disliked how she campaigned. She reveled in the Obama insults and the terrorist implications. Yet she couldn't offer any real program or policy of her own. I completely disagree with Paglia on this one. Palin is the true heir of Schlaffly and Anita Bryant- she just uses the gains of the feminist movement to market herself.

ps- I've spoken to the wolf. He's on my side :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at January 7, 2009 4:51 PM

Anita Bryant and Schafly! BINGO bxgrl!

Oh dear god, do not get me started on Palin. She has betrayed every hard working mother and working woman with her smarmy disingenuous bullshit.

Palin became governor running against a really unpopular guy, and she was handing out oil residuals - who wouldn't vote for that? Oh and she's 'hot'! [wink]. [pow-pow!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 7, 2009 4:59 PM

Bxgrl;

I would tread lightly on the subject of qualifications. Obama has a pretty light resume there. Quick question: name one major policy or legislation that he put his weight behind while he was in the Senate? I don't mean just attaching his name to a piece of legislation. I'm talking about doing some heavy lifting: being out front on something, taking the heat, etc. Other than write two books about himself, what did he do during his time in the Senate?

As to my friend Sarah. The main reason I like her is that she has what used to be called (in NY) "moxie". Here is a woman who came from nothing, no connections, no elite name or school on the resume, yet through sheer grit and determination made something of herself. She did this while at the same time raising a large family, in a state where it's not so easy to make a living. As was on full display during the campaign, the east coast elites were all over her. As the WSJ put it: they hated her because they had never met her before in the CNN "green room". Remember the vitriol thrown at her by folks like Maureen Dowd the DAY AFTER she was selected, when they knew NOTHING about her except that she was not one of "them"? Moreover, I admired that she threw it right back in their face. She wasn't intimidated by them.

Again, you may not agree with her policies, but that is not what I'm talking about here. She is exactly the type of person who used to be at the core of the Democrat party: a working stiff who makes something of themself. Now she is scoffed at by the party - which is why (coming from a working class background myself) I no longer relate to it. As Ronald Reagan once put it: "I didn't leave the Democrat party, they left me".

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 5:12 PM

Cobblehiller;

What the hell are you talking about? Alaska has been handing out oil residuals for decades. How could she be handing out oil residuals as a candidate?

This is exactly the type of visceral reaction I was talking about. Hatred to the point where facts cease to exist.

I do agree she's hot - that doesn't hurt. Hey, but to be hot after 5 kids and working as a governor is no small accomplishment!!

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 5:19 PM

I come from a working class background too- but Palin doesn't have moxie. Chutzpah, but not moxie. Palin and her husband aren't rich by D.C. standards, but they nave never been wanting. Todd Palin inherited (I think) fishing shares, or something like which give him income and I believe also worked for an oil company. Sorry I can't recall better in detail but the upshot is Palin is hardly a Horatio Alger story. I admire her for going into politics, that she got elected governor, but sorry- with a personal value of $2,000,000 a year this is no working stiff. I don't admire her for her policies and lack of interest in the world- all too evident during the campaign.I never admire people who hunt animals from airplanes and think its ok to charge rape victims for their rape kits.

Obama comes form a career of community work and politics. He may be light- as you call it on experience, but his is a first class, intelligent mind and a personality forged from a childhood of hardship and difficulty. this is a person who worked hard at educating himself, and trying to make his community a better place. How is what he's done less than what she has? How is he less working class than she (of course neither of them is working class now). But the Obamas certainly came from more difficult backgrounds, and did far more with it. When Guiliani snarked about community organizers it reminded me of Margaret Mead's famous comment: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. "

Posted by: bxgrl at January 7, 2009 5:37 PM

Benson, ok, ok, calm down there killer!

I meant that the oil residuals were part of why she got elected as Gov. Come on, please, there are lots and lots of successful women that have children and made it to gov and other successful positions.

I'm guessing you watched the Republican convention? I did, too. I disliked the smarmy comments, and the half-truths and the 'mean girls' attitude and the winking. It's just not conducive to productive conversation. It's bullying and really unattractive to me.

Women work really hard to be taken seriously, and she just made an ass of herself. She was an embarrassment to me as a woman. She tried to turn the conversation with Katie around to seem like Katie Couric was attacking her, which was so far from the truth when Katie was lobbing softballs at her, and actually seemed to be trying to help her. It made me cringe.

I'd love nothing more than to see a successful mother of 5 as Vice President or President. Just not her. She failed. Ask McCain - I bet he'd say the same thing. She took a lot of credibility away from him. I honestly used to like McCain, but when he nominated her, I just lost faith completely in him. And two of my lifetime-republican friends agreed with me.

Oh, and bxgrl is right on the money!

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 7, 2009 5:48 PM

BRG: You can have the glass pumps. Shall we kiss and make up now? Girl fights are so ....... Sarah Palin. Right, Benson?

THL: Can I borrow your patent leather heals, dear?

Dave in panties?! I bet the What created an avitar for that so he get get off while playing world of warcraft.

OK, so ENY and I vs. Dave on Sunday. Anyone else want to "play on Dave's team" this week? 11217? Rob?

Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 7, 2009 6:23 PM

She embarrassed me too, cobblehiller but what upset me more was the the republican Party thought they could foist her off us as the future of feminism. as if we were too stupid to see the cynicism of their choice. Women like Sarah Palin do so much damage because they are so easy to point to and say- see how a "real" woman can succeed and still be a "real woman." Until you hear her talk and you realize she has absolutely no clue about the world or politics or of advocating for women's rights, or separation of church and state- or a zillion other things that women have won and she would lose for us.

What can you possibly say about a woman who says it all when she winked at the public on National TV? Maybe it worked when she was a beauty queen, but it's scary to think she believed that a wink and lipstick gave her an edge. A woman who claimed to show us what a real feminist was- and was not able to make a coherent argument in a debate without parroting a memorized talking point. Someone who showed so little interest in the world outside Alaska she couldn't discuss Russia (literally at her state's doorstep!) intelligently.

benson- this is not visceral, "you girls are just jealous" hate. I reject Palin because she was so unqualified and so willing to allow herself to be used by the GOP. And they were stupid enough to think the public wouldn't look past her butt and boobs to her brains. She's not dumb- by no stretch- but tell me, did you really, honestly think she was the right person for the job?

Posted by: bxgrl at January 7, 2009 7:40 PM

Miss Chiff;

Aren't you so clever? Here's a memo for you: drop dead.

Cobblehiller;

I still don't know what the hell you are talking about with regard to the oil residuals and her winning the governership of Alaska. As I said in my post above, Alska has been handing out these dividends for decades.

Bxgrl and Cobblehiller;

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I respect your opinions, but we disagree. The only thing I would add is that alot of women do admire her, and I don't think you've seen the last of her. By the way, when I used the word "visceral" I wasn't trying to imply that that it was a female, emotional reaction. I was stating that I think that alot of people hate her more for her cultural background than her policies, which is unfortunate.

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 8:47 PM

I think people in NY and California and other liberal hot spots hated Palin because she decided to have a baby that she knew before hand would be born with Down's Syndrome. That is a really scary thing to many feminists and abortion-boosters. The little boy would be the poster child for "mommy could have aborted me but I'm glad she didn't". I think she really scared folks in DC and NY. Here was someone who actually stood for something other than herself. She had to be destroyed!!!
Look, I support abortion rights, but I think that there is room in our country for people like Sarah Palin. I admire her actually and I think she showed guts. She had her baby (and we have not seen the last of her or him) she is a real threat to the "flush 'em if they don't improve your career" crowd. She is a scary lady in that regard, and a governor so she ain't going anywhere. I am very glad Obama was elected, I voted for him, but I know it takes two political parties to tango, and I think this lady is more formidable than SNL would have you think.

Posted by: sam at January 7, 2009 8:58 PM

Sam;

Well said (as usual).

Posted by: benson at January 7, 2009 9:10 PM

Sarah Palin, hm. I admire her ambition, but I am not a fundamentalist, although I was raised one. As for teenage sex without birth control - HOT!

PWNing your own daughter -- not so much.

Cobblehiller, thanks for clearing that up. Maybe it is actually a chess metaphor -- to take someone's pawn.

Posted by: mopar at January 7, 2009 10:54 PM

Who knew you had a way with words, benson. I hope you can do better than that in the future.

sam: I do find it interesting that she didn't tell anyone she was having a baby for quite some time. I know that is her right, of course, and no one should judge her final decision but - from my experience - a woman who does not tell everyone she knows that she is pregnant after the first trimester is not the norm. It made made me wonder why she hid it from everyone for so long.

In addition, I think it was clear from several unscripted interviews that she was simply unprepared for the post of VP or President and lacked the understanding of world events that many people beleive is needed, especially in these times. There were lots of states other than NY and California that did not vote Republican and I think Palin's inexperience was a part of the reason many red states went blue.

Posted by: Miss Chiff at January 7, 2009 11:24 PM

"I think that alot of people hate her more for her cultural background than her policies, which is unfortunate."

benson- I really have no idea what you mean by her cultural background. I think most people disliked her in-your-face, you dumb liberals style. I certainly did. She came out of the box swinging and with little to back up her punch. You and sam are far too smart to think she was qualified to be Veep, let alone Prez. Palin was in way over her head and refused to be honest about it. It was all ego, not moxie or courage.
======================
"I think people in NY and California and other liberal hot spots hated Palin because she decided to have a baby that she knew before hand would be born with Down's Syndrome. That is a really scary thing to many feminists and abortion-boosters."

That, sam, is a truly laughable statement. Palin is scary because she was a weapon the right was trying to use to nuke women's rights and multiculturalism back to the 17th century. so they tried inverting the very meaning of women's rights. How perfect- a women who got where she was on the backs of feminists before her, now trying to undermine those very rights for other women. Perfect and it failed. Palin was a fake and a hypocrite. She claims she chose to keep the baby- no, she didn't. She never felt she had a choice to abort, because of her beliefs. The same thing with her daughter. They tried to play it up as a holier than thou "choice". truth was, Bristol never had a choice either.

Your comment is grossly insulting. Those of us who didn't drink the Palin Kool-aid are far too smart to fall for the conservative religious right B.S. of the GOP. FYI- being able to dress the moose you shot ISN'T qualification for the presidency. Courage under fire is not shooting wolves from a plane. Religious tolerance is not inviting Jews for Jesus to speak at your church in order to show respect for other faiths. Really, sam. So sorry you fell for it.

No - what scared us was that a religious extremist like Sarah Palin would set back women's rights, sex education and freedom of religion back about 100 years, while tbeing Bush in heels. But you did illustrate 2 things-

1.even smart men still suffer from misogyny (oh yes- we are all so afraid of Sarah Palin because she wouldn't abort her child- unlie "feminists"), and

2. McCain was right- men vote with their genitals. Why pick her, when there were other truly qualified, educated and experienced Conservative Republican women they could have picked.

Well, benson said, she's hot. I would rather he said competent, educated, tolerant, experienced, or knowledgeable about world affairs. Because are my criteria.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 8, 2009 12:22 AM

oof- "because those are my criteria"

Posted by: bxgrl at January 8, 2009 12:52 AM

Well, well, well.

Ms.Chiff;

I see that you feel that you are an arbiter in these matters. I repeat my memo to you: drop dead.

Bxgrl;

Just explain one thing to me. What is your reaction to Caroline Kennedy's forcefully putting herself in the prime running for the vacant Senate seat for NY? This woman has ZERO experience in public affairs, except lending her name as a fund-raising marquee for two years to the NYC schools. She has never run for the mayor of even a small toan or any public office, never spoken out on public issues, never devoted her time to things like community organizing and such, and she has not even voted in some elections, by her own admission. She refuses to divulge her financial background. You talked about interview meltdowns. How about her interviews, which basically consisted of her saying "you know, you know"?

Moreover, I repeat again that she was not approached about this position, as Palin was. She asserted herself, and used her family connections, to shoulder past other folks who HAVE spent years in the public sphere (like, for instance, Andrew Cuomo).

Would you compare her lack of qualifications to that of Sarah Palin?

I find it curious that there has been nary a peep from the East Coast elites over this outrage. This is nothing more than someone feling they are entitled to a public office because of their family name. Where is the outrage from Mauren Dowd and Eleanor Clift? Hmmmm????

Folks can see right through the hypocrisy on full display here. Sam hit the nail right on the head.

I would also remind you that the only time McCain was ahead in the polls was after he announced her as his running mate, and she gave her outstanding speech at the convention. It was John McCain's own fault that he lost, because he had an inept response to the economic debacle of September 17th.

Posted by: benson at January 8, 2009 9:40 AM

Benson,

I find it interesting that you are trying to deflect the conversation on Palin to criticize Caroline Kennedy.

Kennedy aside, what 'good' effect precisely do you think Palin would have on this country. I'm curious.

And why do you think Palin was chosen by McCain over Lieberman who had been his personal favorite for quite sometime?

Do you think that McCain was in any way pandering to the religious right/the republican base in that selection?

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 8, 2009 9:54 AM

benson- that so-called outstanding speech was not written by Palin but by GOP marketers. It was memorable for pandering to the right-wing extremist base and most memorable for the hockey mom line. If that's your definition of "outstanding" you set the bar too low.

Caroline Kennedy- to tell the truth I'm surprised and don't think she's qualified. I have no idea why she even decided she wanted to be a senator but I will say that she fulfills more of my criteria than Palin does. And she is not a public person- but she has been heavily involved in charitable work for years. Something Palin never even dreamed of doing. She's had far more political experience and tragedy than most people, but if I were voting, I wouldn't vote for her. She has to get her chops. (cobblehiller- what?! Pander?? McCain?!)

Posted by: bxgrl at January 8, 2009 10:02 AM

Cobblehiller;

What you call pandering is good old fashioned politics. The ecumencial voters are something like 33% of the population in this country. Why should McCain not have thrown them a bone, given that this was not his base? All candidates try to shore up their base with their choice of a VP. Don't you think that Obama chose Biden to make up for his lack of foreign experience? I think Obama made a smart pick, just as McCain did. Politics 101.

Answering for myself, I already stated above what I liked about her. I found it refreshing to have a candidate from "Middle America", if you will. As I said above, I admire her grit and determination, and the fact that she comes from a part of the coutry where people still have their feet planted on the ground. She is a true "Washington outsider". To me, these were qualities that were once admired in the Democrat party. I remind you that Harry Truman was a haberdasher and a small-town politician from mid-America. FDR had so little regard for him - he chose him solely for political reasons - and yet he turned out to be a great president.

Now, I've answered your question. I'm still waiting for a response to my question: why is it not hypocrisy that Palin was so scorned for her lack of qualifications, and the same folks have nothing to say about Caroline Kennedy?

Posted by: benson at January 8, 2009 10:09 AM

Palin was also intensively coached and rehearsed for that speech. She even pronounced nuclear properly! Hoo-ray!

Of course that didn't 'take' and she slid back into nuke-u-lar almost immediately after.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 8, 2009 10:10 AM

OK ladies, I have to go. Once again, we'll just have to agree to disagree. A few last words:

Bxgrl: I salute your integrity wrt your opinion about Caroline Kennedy. Would that the some of the elite have the same opinion, I might respect them.

Cobblehiller: a politician making a speech prepared for them by speechwriters. I'm shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you!!

;-)

Have a great day.

Posted by: benson at January 8, 2009 10:17 AM

I wanted to hear your answers Benson. You haven't really answered for me what positives she would bring to foreign affairs, resolving some of our larger crisis', etc.

Don't you think that her positions are a little extreme?

C'mon, you're sharper than this Benson. You're from Brooklyn for g*d's sake!

Do feel that the religious right in this country should indeed be pandered to?

Refreshing? Most of our presidents have been from areas other than the coasts. I don't really count George W. because he's really an Eastern Elite dressed up in Midwest/Texan clothing.

Caroline, eh, I like what her family stands for. I think she likely has connections and can get things done. Is she well-spoken, no - disappointing. But my gut feeling is we could do worse at this time.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 8, 2009 10:18 AM

Cobblehiller;

OK, I'll try to answer your follow-on question.

Foreign policy experience. Palin: zip!! Would I prefer that she had some? You bet. However, that was not a deal-breaker to me. She was running for the number 2 position. I prefer a team where the #1 guy (McCain) has extensive foreign policy experience and the #2 person is the novice. On the democrat side, it was inverted. Once again, I'll use the Harry Truman example. FDR had so much disdain for him that he didn't let him in on any major policy decisions. He wasn't even aware that we were developing an A-bomb when he took office.

I am curious about your statement about the "religious right" the "bogeyman" of the left,if you will. I travel to middle America in my position, and meet these folks often. While I am not in complete agreement with them on all issues, I do find that they share alot of common values with me. I am not going to trap myself into some type of mentality that says "I'm from the east coast, I'm smarter than these folks, and I know better". Moreover, if they represent something like 33% of the population (and growing), I think their voice must be heard.

Posted by: benson at January 8, 2009 10:32 AM

"She is a true "Washington outsider". To me, these were qualities that were once admired in the Democrat party. "

benson, please! some outsider. She is just as political and just as pandering as any of them. Do you think she was come riding into Washington like some Don Quixote reformer? And democrats do still admire gutsy outsiders- we just like them with more qualifications. McCain used to be one- and it would have been a far closer race had he stuck with lieberman. But pandering to the base was the GOP's undoing. If Palin was the smart pick, how is it they lost? Because it was a fake. Feet on the ground? Because she can dress a moose? The GOP manufactured her image- read how she ran the governor's office. She was no differnet than any other 3rd rate politico out there (in all parties).did anyone sound less believable than Sarah Palin constantly calling herself a maverick and winking at us in a national televised debate? How could you fall for that? McCain was the real deal tho'- and it was a shame to see how the GOP treated him.

"Foreign policy experience. Palin: zip!! Would I prefer that she had some? You bet. However, that was not a deal-breaker to me. She was running for the number 2 position."

I understand that idea- but I have some standards for "inexperience" and one of them is that if you want to play on the national stage, at least show you have some interest in foreign affairs. Palin was close to illiterate on it. No curiosity. Bush is the same way- one reason why Rove and Cheney were so able to do so much damage. And with world affairs so paramount, I can't believe you could even say this. The woman had not a clue. That's hardly the person I want running this country.

The religious right? Sure, we all share certain common values, but the so-called culture wars are all about the religious right not understanding the concept of separation of church and state, or the idea that their religious values and beliefs are not mine. They've been pandered to for 8 years and look at the damage.

Interestingly enough, there is some migration of younger evangelists to Obama because even evangelists are coming to realize that we have far more crucial issues to worry about than abortion or gay marriage- issues that can get us all dead if we don't deal with them. The GOP tried to make the country focus on a few values issues- of the religious right. They used them and the religious right happily let themselves be used.

The attitude problem is on both sides. I met far too many of the religious conservatives who have told me all NYC women are whores, and those of us who do not believe in Jesus are going to hell. Not an attitude calculated to break down barriers and impress me with intellectual depth.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 8, 2009 10:59 AM

But benson, didn't it worry you that Palin could have ended up in the #1 position? That made me very uncomfortable on a number of fronts. Palin exhibited so much hubris (not moxie), it was my fear that she would try to fake her way through it. We have problems enough without adding someone with such extreme views into the mix.

I have family up and down both coasts and in 6 states throughout the middle. I talk to them, I'm fully aware of their concerns/interests. They range from Phd's to working/middle class, athiests to at least two evangelicals, and one gay couple (and one evangelical and gay person are siblings!). Over the last two years, I have been to visit most of them or they've been here. Granted not many of them are republican, but some are. Interestingly, the wealthier ones tend to be right wing while the less wealthy tend toward the left to varying degrees. None of them voted for McCain/Palin, while some of them had voted for Bush.

I agree that the religious right should have a voice, but I believe they exert a growing and undue influence on the direction in this country. (33% sounds like a high number). My evangelical relative wishes I would convert but accepts my right to not convert. And I kiss and hug her.

I'm all for religious freedom. I'm not for religious intolerance. My feeling is that the religious right is trying to legislate it's beliefs, and that Palin shares that agenda. And I take issue with that. My cousins just worries that the unconverted are all going to hell - dear heart that she is.

As a woman, I don't want anyone legislating against options for me, my step-daughter, my niece, my cousins, any woman.

And I really think we've lowered the bar with Bush and Palin. We need to raise the bar intellectually, and policy-wise. We can't keep saying that it's ok for our leaders to be un-educated, anti-intellectual, or poorly-spoken or untravelled or unthoughtful. We need more intelligent discourse, we need more awareness of other cultures and religious tolerance. We need to focus on diplomacy and taking care of the problems at home instead of offensive expensive war.

We cannot give over to the lowest common denominator. We can say it's fine to be a hockey mom, and listen to her concerns but we cannot accept that she should run the country. There are plenty of Nascar loving, soccor moms, bowlers, etc. in my family, but they want the smart, the fair, the honest person. They want this country to be represented by the best and the brightest.

We need to aim higher Benson. We need to raise the bar, not lower it, or this country will sink.
