Manhattan Is to Brooklyn As...

park-slope-UWS-0109.jpg
In a rather glowing profile of The Developers Group today, The Daily News cites one sales strategy of its founder, Elan Padeh: He asks prospective Brooklyn buyers which neighborhoods they like in Manhattan, and then directs them towards their Brooklyn equivalents. Here's how he lines them up:
Park Slope = Upper West Side
Williamsburg = East Village + Tribeca
  Fort Greene = West Village
  Dumbo = Soho
  Carroll Gardens = Nolita

Pretty accurate, we'd say. What are some others?

All places in Manhattan where there's practically no room left on the sidewalks. If I ever go back it'll be back to the sleepy, boring UES. Absolutely no hipsters there either.

people in those soho lofts SERIOUSLY need to get window shades, especially when they live across the street from an office building. there is this old lady who is always on the toilet. kid you not. the whole building laughs at her. we can see right into her bathroom! and there is this creepy man who is always changing his underwear in this partitioned area of a loft that looks like a dance studio.

Posted by: bxgrl at January 30, 2009 10:37 AM

What a silly freakin article. There's never been a "new soho" no matter how desperate developers are to call dumbo, or williamsburg or whatever. Williamsburg isn't the new east village. The indie music scene is decent, but nothing like what was going on in the 70s and 80s. FG = WV?? Really? I heard for years Cobble Hill was the new WV.

I think it's true that Brooklyn is the new creative center for NYC, but there's not nearly the stuff going on there was 10,20,30 years ago (except construction of new condos and Duane Reades replacing locally owned business)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 30, 2009 10:37 AM

well prim soho is considered the two blocks on broadway between houston and spring. this is mostly just for commercial stores tho. tho honestly most of them are shuttering hardcore... guess just closed down (tho i have never heard or seen anyone where guess in years so maybe that's why) and a ton of other big name stores are all closing. the rent in the area is too much even for big chains.

Good god Broadway sucks. The only store that is okay is uniqlo, and maybe bloomies.

I assume a "Sphinkster" is an assinine hipster.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 30, 2009 11:19 AM

Soho will be prime for a long time unless it's decimated by a nuclear bomb. Only then it goes back to the pre-70s cheap cast iron spaces where artist and galleries took shops. As it is, a wholesale economic $$$ collapse, if it happens, will be that bomb. And you can move in.

Mr. Snark has removed himself from competition for his own award (you see? ethics has its own reward). And I should point out while a classic of snarkism, there is an earlier entry for Greenwood Cemetery: Greenwood Cemetery = dead.

I myself personally feel this earlier rates a 5 meow for its clear statement of the obvious, done in classic Gracie Allen mode. It just missed being categorized as Yogi Berraeasque by virtue of its subtle social commentary.

c'hiller- poley is one of those people who can say the most stupid, unkind and unthinking statements of the century and not get why people react like they do. East Village + Tribeca? No way. You can't put those areas together with respect to value/class and be serious.

East Village (alone) = Williamsburg.

***Bid half off peak comps***

Posted by: Brownstones Half Off at January 30, 2009 4:16 PM

has anyone seen the developers group office? it's freakishly modern and austere. after walking past it one dark winter night and seeing a lone woman in the glowing room at the reception desk, my husband said "hello, i'm here working in the future." it looks like an art installation.

have to hand it to them - built a giant business.

@ brownstones: also, i think the tribeca/williamsburg example refers to the spaces. there are many similar lofts and while tribeca is now home to the 50 something set, back in the day, it had a vibe like williamsburg does now. i remember loft parties and sample sales in tribeca make shift apartments 15-16 years ago for sure.

agree that people who now live in the east village like williamsburg and come often for the food and music. had someone who rents in the east village ask me the other night about what to buy there in fact.
