Brooklyn Food & Drink Round-Up

Coming Soon: Prime Meats
465 Court St., at Luquer St., Carroll Gardens; (718) 254-0327
New York magazine describes Prime Meats, the forthcoming restaurant from the owners of Frankies 457 Sputino, as "a tribute to great restaurants of the past, and a bid for modern-day destination status. The bar room will open first, followed by an adjacent dining room, an upstairs speakeasy, and a garden." Eater adds that the space will also encompass "small retail booth around the corner. The dining room and storefront, still under construction now, should be ready to go in the next month... The tap room is now open on the weekends and can be accessed for the time being through Frankies 457."

Coming Soon: Shwarma
Chowhound wetwax reports: "Just a heads-up that the tiny space on 16th St and PPW (formerly Sariwa and the 16th St Gourmet) is about to reopen as 'Shawarma.' The owners are from Egypt and very friendly -- definitely will have the usual Middle Eastern fare, and possibly some special regional dishes (Um Ali, maybe?)"

A New Restaurant for Court Street?
Pardon Me For Asking noticed "signs of life at former restaurant Caffé Carciofo at 248 Court Street. Currently, a restaurant/ wine liquor license has been applied for by a certain 'Bread and Butter Development Group, LLC'. Does anyone know anything more?"

After the jump: Moim's recession special, Red Hook's Home/Made, new Calexico signage, Brooklyn's best hot wings, table service at Park Slope's Get Fresh, and some love for the Lovin' Cup Cafe...

Moim's Recession Special
Chowhound famdoc says, "Moim (Garfield Pl. and Seventh Ave., 'Modern Korean') has a $25 prix-fixe dinner special on Tuesday and Wednesday nights only. Choice of 3 apps (including the from the Korean tapa menu), 3 mains (including Bi Bim Bop) and 3 drinks (including a tall glass of Hite, Korean lager). Good deal, good food, nice joint, good service."

Red Hook Furniture Shop Goes Foodie
293 Van Brunt Street (between King & Pioneer), Red Hook; (347) 223-4135
"The owners of Tini are converting their furniture shop Home/Made into a furniture-shop-cum-restaurant, and they joke that someone will be able to buy your chair out from under you. (Hopefully they'll let you finish your meal first?) There's already a kitchen in situ and a garden in back, so this new spot—right across from LeNell's 'Wine + Likker'—should be open within the next couple of weeks." [Shecky's]

Quick Bites
A Brooklyn Life notes that Calexico has replaced the old Schnack signage... Yelpers rate the best hot wings in Brooklyn... The New York Times reports that the Park Slope takeout spot Get Fresh Table and Market has started serving in-house breakfast, lunch and brunch, and will start serving dinner on January 16... The Lovin' Cup Cafe officially opened on Monday at 93 North 6th Street in Williamsburg, serving "honest American food" until 4a.m., an extensive bourbon selection, and a weekend "Recession Brunch," with every item on the menu priced at $6, including their signature bourbon French toast.

Has anyone out there spoken to Chicco lately as to when he'll be opening Saraghina on the corner of Lewis & Halsey????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 11:45 AM

wow...thats a nice looking bar.

Posted by: troll at January 14, 2009 11:55 AM

What place is the picture of...?

Posted by: 11217 at January 14, 2009 12:01 PM

its apparently frankies. hover your mouse over the pic and the file tag pops up.

Posted by: goldie at January 14, 2009 12:06 PM

I was wondering the same thing (about the bar in the pic). It looks like a great place to hang out.

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:09 PM

Thanks goldie. If that's Frankie's 427 at 427 Court Street, I'll have to check it out. Maybe cobblehiller can confirm

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:14 PM

That is a pic of the new bar area of Prime Meats, owned by the same people that run Frankies 457.

Posted by: ilikeslices at January 14, 2009 12:18 PM

Watch out for Moim's recession special. If they do for you what they did for me, they'll charge your credit card twice for the same meal and then obstruct any correction to the account. A must to avoid!

Posted by: PPSer at January 14, 2009 12:21 PM

PPSer, sounds like they may have hired the same guy who managed The Wine Bar/Oven/Blue Pig!

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:24 PM

Biff...are those places still empty???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 12:27 PM

At Moim, I even gave the place the benefit of the doubt (rather than simply registering a complaint with the credit card company), contacting Moim by phone and even dropping by for another meal during which they could correct their mistake. They brazenly refused to take any action to redress the double billing. Shameful. Their food doesn't taste very good anymore. I won't be back. Watch your pockets.

Posted by: PPSer at January 14, 2009 12:32 PM

Hmm, Definitely not the original Frankie's - must be the new place.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 12:36 PM

DIBS, yes. Unfortunately, they're still empty. Some wooden planks were up for a short time covering all of the entrances but they're back down and they all look like they did when they were abandoned. Not sure who would want to open a business in that jinxed location, especially these days.

cobblehiller, I believe people have said very good things about Frankie's. Have you been there?

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:39 PM

I'm very surprised to hear of your experience at Moim, PPSer considering how lovely the owners are. I mean...like some of the most friendly business owners in Park Slope from my experience. This is the first even remotely negative experience I've heard.

I've taken MANY Korean born friends there, and every single one has said it's some of the best Korean food they've had in the city, and in fact have all been back separately from me (even though they all live in Manhattan).

I think the food is excellent, the service great, the decor unique and I go there often.

It's one of Park Slope's best kept secrets.

Posted by: 11217 at January 14, 2009 12:40 PM

"cobblehiller, I believe people have said very good things about Frankie's. Have you been there?"

Yes, I've been there probably half a dozen times. I love it - great food - wonderful really! Great garden and the 'carriage house' out back is terrific for a party.

My only complaint is that on one occasion - when I brought some very important friends of mine for dinner - the service was maddeningly slow. That said, it was Saturday night around 7:30 - 8 pm - maximum peak busy.

If you go and there is a wait - very nicely ask to put your name & cell phone number on the list and then go to the nice little bar directly across the street and have a drink - they will call you when your table is ready. Works out very nicely.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 12:52 PM

11217: Just double check your credit card statements after you've gone to Moim. I certainly can't dispute your experiences. We once had good things to say about Moim as well.

Posted by: PPSer at January 14, 2009 12:53 PM

cobblehiller, thanks for the recommendation. It's now at the top of my list of places to try.

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 12:57 PM

Thanks PPSer,

I'm usually a cash person anyway, but thanks for the heads up!

Posted by: 11217 at January 14, 2009 1:04 PM

i went to both frankies and prime meats this past weekend. there was an hour wait for frankies but they had the prime meats bar open for waiting - so had a drink in there for the hour that ended up only being 15 min. you access it through the frankies garden in the back - then through the new prime meats kitchen (they escort you).

that's a good shot of the bar pictured here, and behind where the photographer is standing are a bunch of other tables as well. almost all of the tables were full, which just goes to show how popular frankies is. the menu had a bunch of absinthe mixed drinks that i was going to try if my wait didnt get cut short (i actually was disappointed that my table was up - i wanted to stay). they had a few beers on tap as well but i don't remember what they were. i'll definitely be checking this place out again when they open.

Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 1:13 PM

They definitely over-estimate the wait times. I've been told 45 minutes, and it turns out to be 25, etc.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 1:21 PM

the old wine bar on Henry is becoming a new wine bar (called ")the wine bar". run as a joint venture btw cranberry's and henry's end. so hopefully....

blue pig/oven/etc all still empty.

Posted by: Ringo at January 14, 2009 1:30 PM

Sounds great! I prefer they overestimate (rather than underestimate) their wait times. I love the look of the place.

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 1:33 PM

The menu looks good and not expensive. I'm a sucker for a cheese course for dessert.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 1:44 PM

Is anyone going to any bar Sunday for the games????

I actually went to Essence (cor of Atlantic & Troy)two weekends ago on Sunday but they didn't open until 5:00. It was a pretty decent place with just a few older guys there. I suspect it gets a younger crowd Fridays and Saturdays though. There's an area for a band to set up. Food was a cut above ordinary bar food as well.

I think you know where this place is MM. I think I mentioned it once before in asking anyone if they've ever been there.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 1:54 PM

Hell yeah! Go Eagles!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 14, 2009 2:06 PM

I'm wearing my Eagles hat all week hipster. Haven't seen any Giants hats!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 2:10 PM

And so goes the full on Manhattanization of Brooklyn. I miss the days when there ware no restuarants in Brooklyn that you had to stand in line for (with the possible excpetion of Peter Luger's + Patsy Grimaldi's). It's just not worth it.

Posted by: Boerum Hill at January 14, 2009 2:20 PM

The only place I will wait in line for is Dmitri's on So. 3rd St. in Philly. But they have a similar deal as cobblehiller explained here...they will call you at the bar across the Street when your table is ready.

Is Frankie's a BYOB?????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 2:27 PM

Hahaha dave - I still have my green owens jersey, what an ill advised purchase!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 14, 2009 2:36 PM

I think that's a collector's item hipster. Just don't wear it down in Philly!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 2:44 PM

dirty hipster, I still have my Mike Quick jersey, but it's boxed up somewhere and I couldn't be bothered to find it so I dug up my old Bobby Clarke #16 Flyers jersey when I went to an Eagles game this year. At the time, everyone was wearing either Eagles or Phillies shirts, but I received many shout outs from old school Broad Street Bully fans.

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 2:48 PM

You never told me you went to Philly, Biff. Where'd you stay/eat??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 2:55 PM

Very nice guys - is there a better sports city out there then Philly? (I'm a new yorker, but you have to give philly its dues)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 14, 2009 2:58 PM

Well, I lived in Chicago for 14 years and that was a great sports city. The last house I had I could walk to Wrigley Field. If I weren't a Philly homeowner I'd probably still be a Cubs/Bears fan.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:01 PM

Is Frankie's a BYOB?????

No, they have a wine list. I suppose you can ask if you want to bring your own - a corkage fee may apply.

Posted by: cobblehiller at January 14, 2009 3:01 PM

frankies is not byob, no. they have inexpensive house wine at $12 a carafe, and a decent selection of italian wines as well.

venturing into this new bar is really a no brainer for frankies here. comfortably having a few drinks while waiting for a table really isn't a big deal, i kind of prefer it actually (and i say comfortably b/c having a few drinks in a crowded bar like say, joya, while waiting for a table is kinda annoying). i'm glad henry's end is doing the same, as mentioned above. that's another restaurant worth the wait.

Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 3:05 PM

biff - arent you a giants fan? why were you wearing philly anything (was this a nyg/eag game?). was it to disguise the fact that you are a ny'er and spare them winging batteries at your head?

dirty hipster - philly is a GREAT sports town - but their fans are literally crazy.

Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 3:19 PM

Robert...they are not anywhere near as mean as NY and Boston fans.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:21 PM

have to disagree with you there dave.

ny'ers are not great (you see the video of them smashing up a porsche in the meadowlands parking lot last weekend)?

boston may even be worse than ny. but philly is widely known for having the most insane fans. it's the only place i'd never wear an away jersey at a game. try wearing a rangers jersey at a flyers game - or a giants.. or even worse a DALLAS jersey at an eagles game. you may not make it out of there alive. i'm not joking.

i love philly.. love the town, have a bunch of friends there. but when it comes to sports they have a screw loose. they will all admit it too, at least the ones i know.

Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 3:30 PM

I have bad news for all of you...BRG just got QOTD again.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:32 PM

to try to veer this back into "food" topic (albeit not brooklyn).. dave, you ever eat at tre scallini in philly?

one of the best meals i have ever had anywhere. was a long time ago though.

Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 3:38 PM

DIBS, I just drove there for the day. I was treated to the game by a firm I do a lot of business with.

RobertMosesJr, while I cheered for the Giants when they played the Pats last year (and revelled in their win as I despise all New England teams), I am a die-hard Eagles fan through and through (just not as vocal about it as others). I always wanted to finally see a game in Philly and this was the first one. Unfortunately, it was the loss to the Redskins in a very poorly played game.

Even though I'm not from Philly, when I was a boy, I used to love watching the Flyers play in the mid to late 70s. That's when the real men played. The names alone would scare you: Dave "the Hammer" Schulz, Orest Kindrachuk, Bob "Mad Dog" Kelly, Gary Dornhoefer, etc. I still clearly remember the game where Ed Van Impe took down a player on the Russian team and Bill Barber almost knocked another one back to Kiev with a hit before the Russians literally skated off the ice and were trembling at the thought of coming back on.

By the way, everyone outside of Dallas, especially in the NFC East cities HATES the Cowboys!

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 3:41 PM

I have not tried Tre Scalini yet but have heard about it. In South Philly we like Dante & Luigi's. The best restaurant in Philly (expensive) is Vetri and the second best may now be their new place, Osteria.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:43 PM

No one has liked the Cowboys since Landry has been gone. He was an exceptional coach, professional and gentleman.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 14, 2009 3:46 PM

Actually, I hated the Cowboys even with Landry, which one just naturally does when cheering for the Eagles, but I'll admit they were even more despicable under Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones.

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 3:50 PM

when philly beats pittsburg in the superbowl (yes - when) i truly fear for the city. somehow they survived a world series, but philly is more of a football town.

dave, i'd board up the windows just in case.

Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 3:56 PM

Umm, open thread guys?

Posted by: spnder at January 14, 2009 4:23 PM

sorry, spnder, we got a little carried away. But since you're here, how about posting something relating to the topic of Brooklyn Food & Drink like we originally did?

Posted by: Biff Champion at January 14, 2009 4:29 PM

Frankie's has a great feel, decent wine list but an incredibly limited menu because they don't(as of 4-5 months ago)have a kitchen. It's 2 guys operating a hot plate...sausage cavatelli works, salad bland, bottle of wine....2 people $80...no joke....(should mention that a few of the waitresses r pretty hot.)
