Streetlevel: Produce Market for Myrtle

A new produce market, a kosher one nonetheless, is setting up shop at 724 Myrtle Avenue in that neighborhood no-man's land that's technically Bed Stuy but doesn't really feel like it. "Even if it ends up being bootleg version of Mr. Kiwi’s, I’m OK with that," writes the Bed Stuy Blog. "There really aren’t any decent produce markets in the area, so I believe that this place should do some decent business."

that is nothing more than a bodega with a fancy new sign.
(i love bodegas tho but hate when they are referred to as something else.. you know. wolf. sheep's clothing..)
(not sure if this went thru)

This sign is better than most but still tacky rob. Who wants to pay extra for kosher anyway???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 29, 2008 2:36 PM
just a glorified bodega from the outside for now. kosher does cost more, but "Fruit Market" in this case makes it sound like more produce than anything else, which if im correct doesnt need to be kosher certified, so shouldnt cost more than any other cornershop.

what is the meaning of the word "nonetheless" in the original post?
i know this isn't a grammar blog. nonetheless, maybe one of the smart brownstoner readers out there can enlighten me.

I think some of our Canadian brethren would disagree on that rob
Biff??? Bifff????
Nonetheless, I don't know why there are maple leaves on the sign.

oh, the perils of clip art.

The leaves appear to be part of the logo for the store name "Fig tree." Nonetheless, it would have been more appropriate to use a fig leaf than a maple leaf. Oy

I bet they won't even sell figs. Only the real Italian places know a good fig.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 29, 2008 3:12 PM
I wouldn't know a good fig if I fell over it. Nonetheless...

GHB...you don't know what you're missing. Figs wrapped in prosciutto!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 29, 2008 3:32 PM
Dave, just kidding. I love figs, both fresh and Newtonized!
Posted by: GHB at December 29, 2008 3:37 PM
the Hot 97 billboard is a nice touch too lol

Yeah, I never understood what a Newton was except for the physics newton as a measure of force. One would have expected other newton-followons: strawberry Newtons, oreo newtons, etc. Why hasn't Ben & jerry's done a fig newton ice cream????

I wonder if they'll sell Kosher Maple Syrup?

I have come to always expect brownstoners to hate on anything and everything new in Brooklyn. This post is no exception.

The best figs I ever ate I picked from a tree in Israel. Lots of Mediterranean food in modern Jewish cuisine.

Big Jugs, take a pill.. No one is hating anything here.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 29, 2008 8:44 PM
Am I crazy or is Myrtle missing the R on the sign?
Posted by: gemini10 at December 29, 2008 8:44 PM
Very good gemini. We were all so busy at work today that all of us missed!!! LOL
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 29, 2008 8:54 PM
It was spelled phonetically for the locals...Moitle Ave
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 29, 2008 8:55 PM
WOW, I mean seriously? how did you all miss that??
hahaha
good times!

holy moly. I have been whining about no fruits/veg around here forever. Great. Now I don't have to choose between scurvy and driving my car to buy something fresh.

I wonder if this place on "Mytle" will have a "dinning room"
