Streetlevel: New Blood on 5th Avenue

ugg-celine-1208.jpg
In the old Beacon's Closet, which moved down the street, and Ugg shop has opened up, just in time for the cold spell. And down the street from Ugg is a new women's clothing store called Celine. Score two for 5th Avenue. More on Gowanus Lounge. GMAP

A whole store devoted to Ugg, I don't see how this will survive.

"uggs? as in those ridiculous boots!?"
While, I hate the look of uggs. They are indeed 'uggly'. I will admit, I have a pair. My feet freeze in the winter. I get very cold feet (some will say, I have a cold heart). I would need to wear 4 pairs of socks, but when I wear the Uggs my feet are nice and toasty....BAAAAA.

rob...your santa suit post in the Forum is gone!!!

I was waiting for someone to point that out BHO.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 2:29 PM

Posted by: Santa at December 17, 2008 2:33 PM

I think that's benson's "domestic help" Juanita out shopping.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 2:36 PM

"I think that's benson's "domestic help" Juanita out shopping."

He's paying her alot, if she can afford uggs!
Benson, bring down to under minimum wage, she is a minority!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 17, 2008 2:39 PM

My illegal mexican friend makes well above minimum wage. The family just has to wait for "Change You Can Believe In" to get any kind of medical benefits.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 2:45 PM

That was naughty BHO.

I have a pair of black short UGGs - they're smooth leather on the outside, big and clonky and they are fuzzy on the inside and they are the YUMMIEST WARMEST boots I have ever owned and they're waterproof.

That said, I can only wear them when it's literally only 10 degrees outside or I sweat to death.

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 17, 2008 2:53 PM

DIBS...there are alos alot of 'legal' citizens who have to wait for "Change You Can Believe In" to get any kind of medical benefits.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 17, 2008 2:55 PM

Cobble, I have the short brown ones. They recommend that you don't wear socks with them, believe it or not.

I looked at the ones with the wedge heel, they just came out with, but it didn't have the fur all they way down the boot on the inside. What's the point of uggs without the sheep all they way thru.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 17, 2008 2:58 PM

Yes, I know that BRG. In reality, it will be a more complicated and cumbersome process once the benefits are in place. If you're illegal you go to the emergency room and get treated and leave. Simple. No paperwork, no muss, no fuss. The rest of us subsidize it. Which I have no problem with for healthcare.

What I will not subsidize, for example, are the union wages and benfits of the MTA employees who should be taking some sort of a paycut instead of nothing while everyone else, riders and non-riders wind up paying.

Sorry for the rant but I've reached my boiling point on unions that are no longer socially necessary as they were decades ago. The arroganc of the autoworkers is ridiculous.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 3:00 PM

Do any of them come in clear heels, BRG?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 3:01 PM

"The rest of us subsidize it. Which I have no problem with for healthcare."

Hubby and I are self employed. I dare say what we pay for health insurance....."but I've reached my boiling point".

Something has to be done. This system is not working for so many people. Maybe, I shouldn't have become a legal citizen.

I wish they came in clear. I can head out on the streets to work and feel warm :)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 17, 2008 3:14 PM

I can vouch for the fact that Uggs are toasty warm, having owned them *before* they became hot and now that they're "out." Celine is a super high-end store locate on Madison Avenue...could this possible be any relation? And located in PS? the horror!

Posted by: tiptoe at December 17, 2008 3:29 PM

Judging by the look of the mannequins in the window, this is not THE Celine. No way.

Posted by: Nokilissa at December 17, 2008 3:49 PM

so where on 5th?

Posted by: troll at December 17, 2008 3:54 PM

Someone made a major marketing error at Uggs and can you just use a name like Celine? Maybe we'll have "Prada" next.

Not interested. Not that I have any money to spend anyway.

Posted by: superstooper at December 17, 2008 4:00 PM

Not all UGGs look like the suede kind with the bits of fur sticking out.

They have lots of other kinds - I have some that don't look at all like the "out" kind.

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 17, 2008 4:27 PM

"I have some" cobblehiller??? How many pair of these expensive boots do you have?? Could you perhaps donate some this year in the Marines' "Uggs for Domestic Help" campaign. Benson won't even buy his maid a pair of shoes.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 4:33 PM

I have the 'out' pair...it's about the warmth for me.

If I'm not wearing them in the winter and need to wear other boots, I'll wear cashmere socks...those also do wonders...Just found socks that are 81% cashmere....my feet are so happy!

When I decide to replace my uggs, I'll hand them down to 'Benson's' help. Poor woman, what she has to clean up!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 17, 2008 4:45 PM

You cold-footed people all realize there are more fashion-forward shearling boots out there. But if you enjoy looking like a high school student from Darien, CT - enjoy!!

Posted by: A Guest at December 17, 2008 4:57 PM

A Guest...(I've had mine for about 5 years now and need replacing).....true, there are more fashion forward shearling boots our there now. But, during these economic times and at $400-500 for them. I'm going to wear my snuggly 'ugg'lys and prance around like a teenager...maybe, I should have gotten a pink pair.

If you know of an inexpensive pair, do share.
Waterproof, with shearling (real, not the faux fuzzy crap)all the way down to the toe...and a cute wedge heel.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 17, 2008 6:31 PM

Emu's. They're uggs knock offs. (With real wool.) I got mine for $50 on sale on amazon. I love my amazon prime.

Although, I have to admit, my toddler's emus look nicer than mine. Not a ton of arch support. But yeah, I can wear them without socks, and because they were so cheap, I have no probs with putting them in the washing machine.

I also love my washing machine... but that is a story for another time.

Exactly, Nokilissa, the "Celine" sign over those dowdy, clearly non-designer clothes was cracking me up. How can this store owner be so clueless as to not know he/she can't use a huge international designer name for their store?

As for Uggs, hearing how warm they are makes me understand why people buy them. But now it's grossing me out that celebrities wear them in 80 degree weather in CA. With their feet all sweaty. My problem is they are the most unflattering boots for a woman's leg anyone could possibly make. They make everybody's legs look short and fat no matter how you're really built.

Posted by: traditionalmod at December 18, 2008 8:58 AM

"How many pair of these expensive boots do you have??"

I have precisely ONE pair DIBS.

Benson is a cheap son-of-a-gun, why do you think we share the maid*?!

*Please note: I have ZERO domestic assistance unless you count Better Half picking up the vacuum cleaner here and there.

I walked by the UGG store in Soho last Saturday and there was a huge long line out in front of people waiting to get in. This was at like 3:00 in the afternoon. I don't know if they were giving away free merchandise or what.
