Shout-Out to Outpost

outpost-123108.jpg
We usually blog from our rented desk in Dumbo, but over the holidays we've been trying to stay closer to home. With two kids underfoot, however, sometimes (like right now!) you gotta get away, so we've stepped over to Outpost on several occasions in the last ten days. As the eastern stretch of Fulton Street in Clinton Hill has fallen on tough times in recent years, Outpost has been a warm, friendly oasis in a desert of deserted store fronts; now that the Fulton BID has been signed into law, let's hope that lots more new businesses join Outpost. Founded in 2005, Outpost is located at 1014 Fulton Street and is open from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Check it out!

I like Outpost. It's sometimes my halfway point on long walks, and is a great place to unwind. I think their immediate surroundings have potential to be a very successful retail stretch, there are some great storefronts near there, and room for new growth. Too bad about the horrific building on the corner of Classon and Fulton, but it's still a great place.

My friend invited us to go ice skating in Prospect Park with her and her 11-year old daughter. They go to Outpost before skating and we met them there for breakfast. (It's right near the Franklin Shuttle) It's a great spot- nice atmosphere, good food and coffee. You have to check out their tiled bathroom.

Best coffee in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene hands down.

Oh no.. You Asshats better hope that the Outpost stays open! This is the ONLY thing that bridges Grand and Classon Aves. That section of Fulton St is a dump and will never be any thing because of the abandon Vocational school next to the park and the empty lot on (Downing and Grand). So pray that the Fulton St. BID is a success and the Outpost is open...

There's also just west of Grand, Brown Betty and the new Bakery Michael Allen, as well as the new southern cuisine restaurant (White Lilly?). Outpost is nice, so is Kush, and the new bakery is fantastic. Happy New Year!

The empty lot on Putnam between Downing and Grand was recently purchased from what I've heard.

Sorry, Kush is West of Grand (actually on Putnam), White Lilly or Samantha's Southern Kitchen (I forget the name) is on the corner of Grand and Fulton, Brown Betty is on Grand two door down and Michael Allen Bakery opened on Fulton between Grand and Downing. Here's wishing them success in the new year and hoping that more local entrepreurs make there way to Fulton Street. There are several open storefronts for rent now.

I always stop at the Outpost when I am running on a visit to my son who lives on Lefferts Place. I hope this part of Fulton St gets a little less desolate. Brown Betty has nice food too. That building on Lefferts and Fulton is pretty ugly.

The music is always just right, and the coffee is good.
