Madoff Said to Use Unregistered Side-Unit for Clients (Update2)

Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Federal investigators working through the weekend to unravel Bernard Madoff’s alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme found evidence he ran an unregistered money-management business alongside his firm’s brokerage and investment-advisory subsidiaries, two people with knowledge of the inquiry said.

Why do you say that Dave - I mean how do you see the market as strong? (serious question)

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 11:18 AM

I went to Trader Joe's for the first time yesterday, the one on Atlantic and Court. Nothing out of the ordinary except for one thing: their frozen meat section is unbelievable. I'm totally buying all my meat there from now on.

Posted by: infinitejester at December 15, 2008 11:18 AM

speaking of methadone clinics... there is one like a block away from where i work.. ive been working the same block for the last 8 years and i never knew there was a methadone clicic right near by. but for years now every morning there's a huge group of shady people with junkie face all standing around yelling at each other, ordering coffee with 5305 spoons of sugar, and meh i dont know where im going with this actually.. but yeah anyway i guess i just always wondered why they were always in this area (spring & broadway in soho). i did peek in the methadone clinics windows a few time, im curious like that. they have really funny signs up.. back in the day my biological mother was in a methadone maintenance program. not sure if she still is or not, no one has heard from her in over 10 years.

No Dave! This is like when the Tsunami first hit. All of the animals left the beaches days before because they knew something was wrong. The Humans watched the water get sucked of the beaches and stood in amazement at the title wave! When everything was over the Animals gored on the flesh of the dead humans. This the same thing going on right now. The Madoff thing was real bad because when rich people start to lose money, its game over...

Speaking of What > Madoff > Mets > real estate -- anyone wonder if the Love Lane condos will be impacted by all this?

Posted by: Ringo at December 15, 2008 11:23 AM

cobblehiller...the market is taking all the continued bad news quite well. It also looks like it wants to break above its 50 day moving average...which would be a strong signal. For now, it's a trade...it could go up 15% or 40% but it probably will correct down again after that. No one is yet sure where the economy will bottom.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 15, 2008 11:24 AM

Posted by: cb6 at December 15, 2008 11:34 AM

What,

I just can't believe how many people put their eggs in Madoff's basket. And then in the Daily News yesterday - did you see the older couple that lost A MILLION dollars. Their life savings/retirement money.

Drier is just a LOON. I think HE went off his meds.

Re: Mets - from your lips to G*d's ears! The Mets HAVE to do better next year. I mean at least get into the playoffs!

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 11:34 AM

The market typically bottoms 6 months before the economy does. Nothing is typical about this so knowing anything with any degree of certainty is difficult. It's all about when people collectively (the market) feel a bit more comfortable about taking on more risk. They will be big sellers of Treasuries and buyers of equities, especially riskier ones like emerging markets. This trade is not for the faint of heart but if you're invested for the longer term stay put.

Dave - I'm a pharmacist. Lets open that clinic!!

Posted by: troll at December 15, 2008 11:36 AM

There were a lot of red flags about Madoff. Barron's wrote about it on May 7, 2001. One of my colleagues took a cursory look at it for one of her clients and said no way. The returns he showed were too good to be true. Luckily her client took her advice.

Anyone that puts ALL of their money in one investment is completely foolish.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 15, 2008 11:38 AM

This Madoff thing is the nail in the coffin of free market/deregulation loonies. See ya later kudlow.

Posted by: billyboomer at December 15, 2008 11:41 AM

So 6 months after the market bottoms, but when do we know if the market * has * bottomed? And don't you think that this 1st quarter is going to be a big downer with the suggested job losses that may be comming? Or is that a good thing - market wise - in that companies will be stronger financially after the 'blood-letting' is over?

I'm in for the long haul. It's the short term job market that I'm worried out about! [It's all about me, of course!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 11:43 AM

I posted this in another thread, but I am interested in someone's answer, if they know - those Google satellite maps are amazing. I could spend hours looking at different streets all over everywhere. Did they just do this in NY and other major cities, or do they have sat maps for the entire world? What an undertaking. I'm in awe.

When did they do this, anyway?

Hey, it's an off topic thread, why not?

Posted by: Montrose Morris at December 15, 2008 11:44 AM

I just can't believe how many people put their eggs in Madoff's basket.

Cobblehiller this the tip of the iceberg! I bet Hedge Funds and Brokerage Houses are getting calls from all over the world and I think the fuel for the Mutant Asset Bubble gets pulled ASAP! Massive redemption calls coming your way and I bet other people are scrambling to get liquid right now! I thought the market would be OK until Obama get sworn in but maybe this crash get stared now!

"Re: Mets - from your lips to G*d's ears! The Mets HAVE to do better next year. I mean at least get into the playoffs!"

Did you know the Mets blew 27 games when leading after 7 innings?! The closing core sucked last year but with K-Rod and Putz, it's lights out baby! I wished they would have signed Iberez, he went to the Phillies, who I think may repeat as Champs, they have a great team. But let's see! 8 weeks to Pitchers and Catchers...

Did you read that Madoff article in the NYT this weekend, too. Wow, the part about the SEC investigation was a little stunning, no?! The Barron's thing was surprising in that this guy continued to have such success. Were people just so dazzled by the returns? Or do they really not do much research?

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 11:50 AM

The Love Lane Condo Project is a disaster. It was one of the worst real estate blunders I have ever seen. The old garage was a cash cow. Instead of something that everyone needs -a garage- they are putting in something that nobody needs ot wants-new condos. Now, with the glut of new condos in Brooklyn, it looks like the developers have finally accepted the grim reality that they are investing in a project that will produce condos with no views, situated on a service alley, in a former garage, that is kind of ugly and squat. What were they thinking? They killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.
I think there is still time to put the project on reverse and create a state-of-the-art parking garage where there has always been a garage. Unlike yet more condos, it will make money hand over fist.

Inigo, I agree with you completely on the Love Lane Condos.

Next off-topic topic...nobody's mentioned the Iraqi reporter who threw his shoes at bush? I thought the guy had really good aim (unfortunately, not good enough, though) and looked like that wasn't the first time he's done that. Apparently, throwing your shoes at someone is the worst insult one can do in those parts...

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 15, 2008 11:56 AM

Rod and Putz! that's a riot. Hadn't made the connection yet. PErhaps the mets should add another guy in "schlong" relief.

Posted by: wasder at December 15, 2008 11:57 AM

Re: Madoff, I think Madoff's success all these years is, in great part, a combination of ignorance, greed, and the fatal blind trust and comfort of placing one's money with "one of your own", someone in the same income bracket, same country club, shared interests and background. I don't think people deserve what happened to them, but it emphatically illustrates the need to do research, wait and ask questions and get advice, and realize that if something looks too good to be true, it ALWAYS is.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 15, 2008 12:02 PM

Inigo, according to certain people on this site, there is no such thing as a condo glut. How could you even suggest it?

That said, yet another story of proposed unnecessary condo development causing the destruction of perfectly good structures, ie, Bay Ridge Church, the church in Vinegar Hill, Love Lane Garage, and countless other sites, including the biggie, Ward's Bakery and the warehouses in Williamsburg/Greenpoint.

Biff: I think it's hitting the sole of your shoe on someone that is the insult. I have to say, the guy had good aim! I think I heard that he said "President Bush, this is a goodbye kiss for you, you dog!"

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 12:10 PM

re: Love Lane, I was asking specifically because wasn't the Mets owner the main investor?

But yes, I agree the idea was not smart especially there seemed to be no price resistance at that location. They could have charged 500+ and would have been full. I was priced out myself long ago.

Define the new MAB What if you say it doesn't concern housing now.

Just which assets SPECIFICALLY are you now talking about. There is actually only one answer. There is One asset class that is approaching the top of a bubble. Any idea what it is????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 15, 2008 12:17 PM

BRG, SNL has been awful for years. It got a shot in the arm from Tina Fey during the Palin campaign, but there are a million funnier shows to watch.

cobblehiller, someone said to me that throwing the shoe was uncalled for. I replied that killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis was probably more uncalled for. Fermez la Bush!

What, I know, I was trying to work in a bad joke there with a reference to their offense, which was in fact impressive. You're right; the bullpen was atrocious and the cause of their collapses over the past two years. It'll be interesting to see how much Wilpon lost to Madoff and if and how it will impact the Mets. I know the Mets are saying it won't impact them, but I'm not sure I buy that.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 15, 2008 12:17 PM

SNL has been awful for years and Biff's right...the Tina Fey thing was to SNL as a $15B bailout will be to the autos.

"The Bush shoe thing was hilarious but I think it was staged. If that guy had a knife and could throw it like a professional Bush would've been dead..."

I thought it was hilarious and surreal but don't believe it was staged. That shoe was traveling fast and would have done some damage to the head if it hit the target (or perhaps knocked some sense into it).

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 15, 2008 12:21 PM

Biff Citi field is a cash cow for Wilpon! He has the money to pay his players. The Madoff thing is his own personal money! With the Mets Channel, new ball field and better players the Mets will do about 3.5 million this season.

Hi Montrose,

Google added the satellite maps sometime in 2004, I think. I remember sitting in my apt in Jackson Heights and googling my mom's roof in California.

What did everyone do this weekend? I see Rob heard singing. That's nice. I've been practicing my SnarkSlope lyrics. Well, not really.

We saw the Elizabeth Peyton show of portrait painting at the New Museum and then tried a new (to us) restaurant, Bacaro, in Chinatown. Both were kind of scene-y and fashion-y and we had a good time. Attended the vigil march/rally/protest in honor of Jose Sucuzhanay Sunday. I feel so bad for him and his family. About 300 people attended, a truly diverse crowd. The Brooklyn D.A. was there and seemingly every assembly person and community board member. The D.A. said the case is the No. 1 case in his office.

bmfesq- I'm going to have to disagree with you on the alt-a loans and most option arms adjust monthly right from the get go.

The vast majority of Alt-A arms were LIBOR arms and your typical 5/1 Libor arm carried a margin of 2.25% With todays LIBOR at 2.42% Borrowers if their rate adjusted today would end up with a 4.67% rate. Pretty good.

The subprime arms are what you had to watch out for, some had margins of 6%-8%

thanks cobblehiller, my place is a loft so I really don't have a dining room per se, more of a dining area over in the corner. I have a rather large table that seats 10 so I want lighting that would be good at both ends of the table and I think it works with the industrial loft feel that I have going on. I can't make up my mind. It has that early 20th century art deco feel which I like.

Coupons, anyone? I'm trying to do my part and spend some money.

Mopar, I hope they catch the sob's soon. There isn't much worse than killing someone because you don't like their race, ethnicity gender, or sexual orientation, presumed or otherwise. There is a reason hate crimes send more than the usual chill down your back. No one is safe. Thank you for going to the rally.

Adam...i'm still going to wait for lower rates. I have to check the rate on the other property too.

I would have thought all the complainers from the "A Thought on Comments" thread would be tearing it up with their insightful on-topic posts in the other threads today given the usual suspects are pretty much staying here; yet there is barely any activity in the other stories.

Those coupons come out all the time. I'm going to sit and wait. In the mean time I'll check out that site BRG.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for lower rates. We are seeing a lot weird stuff going on right now. We are making more money selling 5.25% rates than 5.5% rates.

Posted by: Adam Dahill at December 15, 2008 1:34 PM

Well! I guess THAT was a conversation stopper!

Dave, you didn't answer my earlier question, I'm curious to hear what you think:

So 6 months after the market bottoms, but when do we know if the market * has * bottomed? And don't you think that this 1st quarter is going to be a big downer with the suggested job losses that may be coming? Or is that a good thing - market wise - in that companies will be stronger financially after the 'blood-letting' is over?

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 3:05 PM

WOW. I go do some actual work and come back to find this ever exciting open thread...dead.

It must have been the light fixture... so offensive :)

Cobble...I would love to engage you, but I don't know anything about economics. I know nothing about how the world spins on the dollar.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 15, 2008 3:12 PM

It's an enigma cobble. We will only know that it has bottomed after it has started to rise. And if it looks like its premature and the economy continues to worsen then it will go down again.

If I knew when the actual bottom was I'd be living in the Connolly mansion from last week

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 15, 2008 3:18 PM

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 15, 2008 3:22 PM

Someone called? Speaking of enigmas, one of my favorite quotes comes from Joseph Conrad in Heart of Darkness:

"Droll thing life is - that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself -- that comes too late - a crop of inextinguishable regrets."

Curiously enough, one of our fellow posters seems to like seven words uttered by Lt. Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now: "Someday this War is Going to End."

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 15, 2008 3:39 PM

"I love the small of napalm in the morning."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 15, 2008 3:40 PM

cobble...The classic sign of a market bottom is not that the fundamental news goes from bad to good or even from very bad to not quite as awful, but that even genuinely disappointing numbers lose their capacity to shock investors; as happened Friday with the lack of an auto bailout and the Madoff thing.

Also by Capt. Willard! I love the phase "Someday this War is Going to End." is because someday this crap is gonna end and maybe we can get back some sanity that we lost during the years of the Mutant Asset Bubble...

"I love the small of napalm in the morning."

The good people of this board better not hear me say these words, EVER! Because the gates of Hell are open and Lucifer is walking out to reek havoc and destruction across the financial world! That would be the day of reckoning...

"“Using paper to cleanse the anus makes as much sense, hygienically, as rubbing your body with dry tissue and imagining it removes dirt.”

im sorry but it is absolutely not the same. the rest of your body doesnt produce self cleaning fluids like the female goob and the backside (im trying to keep this pg rated) of both sexes do. dry toilet paper back there is completely fine. you dont need to be spracking your backdoor gooberpie with water. i still dont even see how that would even work to begin with and it just seems messier!

"They're called cycles What. We'll be in another up cycle faster than your doomsaying could imagine."

No Dave this is not a cycle, this is the after effects of a Mutant Asset Bubble. The events in this last year are historical in nature. Most of our largest Banking Institutions are gone. The US Government is assuming liabilities for Citibank, AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Lehman Bros. Plus don't forget in Maiden Lane the NY Fed is still holding the liabilities of Bear Sterns.

Here you go Dave! I can do this all day long...

Fed Refuses to Disclose Recipients of $2 Trillion (Update2)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=apx7XNLnZZlc&refer=home

Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve refused a request by Bloomberg News to disclose the recipients of more than $2 trillion of emergency loans from U.S. taxpayers and the assets the central bank is accepting as collateral.

Bloomberg filed suit Nov. 7 under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act requesting details about the terms of 11 Fed lending programs, most created during the deepest financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Oh poo mist, I had to file a story, and missed all this. Thanks Cobblehiller, Montrose, I am feeling all Christmas-y along with you. Caught the last bit of "It's a Wonderful Life." Isn't that about the First Great Depression? One of these days I'll have to catch the beginning of it.

The What, even Russia came back after the collapse of the Soviet Union. And we're nowhere near that -- yet. Eventually things will look up.

We have the inspection tomorrow on a house in Ocean Hill with original everything. Still can't decide though if we should leave our beloved Bushwick. The dilemna is:

Curtain No. 1: Fabulous house museum in OK neighborhood.

Curtain No. 2: OK house in fabulous neighborhood.

Posted by: mopar at December 15, 2008 6:56 PM

(I mean fabulous to us, of course. It's all relative.) (Also I'm obsessed with original kitchens.)

Posted by: mopar at December 15, 2008 6:58 PM

Ooh interesting mopar, good luck with your decision! Like the original kitchen idea - when you choose will you share photos?

It's a Wonderful Life is so great! I haven't seen it yet this year, but I will!

The 'spirit' has been a little slow in coming to me this year - but it's starting to throw little sparks here and there!

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 7:03 PM

Mopar, I have an "original kitchen". It's like an English unfitted kitchen, no wall or undermount cabinets, original sink with front legs, built in pantry and original cast iron and brass range hood. I have 2 hutches for storage and an old oak kitchen table from my childhood home upstate smack in the center of the room. While that sounds really nice, no way I'm sending photos anytime soon, as the plaster is falling down, floor looks like the Titanic (now), I have a bare lightbulb hanging from the ceiling, and the range hood still needs to be stripped of 10 layers of paint on the inside. One leg of the sink is leaning against the wall, and my window can't close all the way, and I've never had any counter space.

Other than that, I love it.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at December 15, 2008 7:17 PM

no baby yet. could be another week yet. thanks for asking though. it is likely you will know its the time when you don't see me for a little while. but until then, baby, what baby? haha

Posted by: wasder at December 15, 2008 7:19 PM

That should read - Built in cupboard, not pantry. I would kill for a real, separate pantry. Someday, the house I live in will have one, if I have to build it in there.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at December 15, 2008 7:20 PM

MM, my parents house over here had an original sink with legs, and one pantry closet and a walk-in dish closet. I think it must have had a door on it originally. I don't know if my parents removed it or if it was gone already. The sink was great because it had the second really deep side which was great for hair washing and soaking/dyeing/bleaching things. The ceiling was low - garden level, but tin, too! [Love that!]. It's all gone now - sadly.

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 7:43 PM

"what baby? haha"

Oh, you laugh now! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 15, 2008 7:44 PM

If there's a throwdown in any of the topic forums then you just say "yo jerk, meet me in the open forum after school" and it's open season.

Posted by: werner at December 15, 2008 10:30 PM

Both these kitchens sound wonderful. Sure, I'll post photos if we get it. Maybe you can all come over for cookies. Montrose, that hood sounds rare. I take it the range is no longer under it? The kitchen we are inspecting is also "unfitted." No counters. I hope a table works just as well.

Does everyone know "Bungalow Kitchens" by Jane Powell? Lots of photos of old kitchens.

Posted by: mopar at December 15, 2008 10:41 PM

Mopar, I've seen similar hoods here in the 'hood (couldn't resist) - in a couple of houses in Bed Stuy. Both of them had the original cast iron wood/coal stoves under them, with the round galvanized pipe feeding into the chimney. My modern gas stove is sitting under the hood, but there is no exhaust system or anything, it's purely decorative.

Cobblehiller, I have the same sink. When I first saw it, the guy who sold me the house told me I should tear it out and replace with a modern sink and countertop. NOT! He also told me to rip out the built in and replace with some cabinets and another countertop. No way.

My plans for the room include a tin ceiling, someday. I am familiar wih Jane Powell's book, but I don't have it, it's on my very long Amazon wish list.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at December 16, 2008 12:21 AM

Oh, the Jane Powell book is definitely worth getting. Tons of photos. Largely of the West Coast, however, which is different. But there's a handful of pre-1920s kitchens with many photos and those are similar to what you describe.

I've never seen a hood in real life, only in the Powell book.

These kitchens sound very cool. The one we inspected today had a kind of weird wide shallow high fireplace. Turns out it was for a "range," a wood burning stove that was halfway built into the wall. Too bad the range wasn't still there.

Why would anyone rip out an original built-in and replace with crappy off the shelf non fitting particleboard cupboards? But apparently people do.
