I'm in Shitzville, America. Party with 50+ people. I'll be in the corner crying I want to go home to NYC!

My lovely wife and I, will be helping the mayor drop the ball tonight at Times Square.
Damn, did I just give my true identity away?
Posted by: sam at December 31, 2008 10:59 AM
Sam, that's what about 300,000 people that go to Times Square say.
Some will say the Mayor has dropped the ball many times :)

Throwing a Caribbean-themed party. My wife is cooking tons of dishes from the islands, and I'm making Planter's Punch, Cuba Libres, and Daiquiris. Plus we're putting swashbuckler movies from the 70s on the big screen.
Why Caribbean? Because that's where I'd rather be for the next three cold, dark months!

"youre on the lower east side, brg?"
I’m in hell right now. I’m immersed in middle f*cking ‘America’. Outside a city with absolutely nothing to do and that’s void of any culture or life. Downtown is a desolate compilation of odd structures and one museum. The best architecture is the strip mall, the one ethnic restaurant is Italian, the happening place in town is Chuck E. Cheese.
WHY AM I HERE?!?!? Damn, family! There is great hiking here and I’ve have been hitting the mountains everyday, but I’m beyond anxious to get back to NYC.
To get to this ‘compound’, we drove for 8 hours, we passed 28 Walmart’s, 7 big K’s and 143 McDonald’s.
Life is large here!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 11:10 AM
BRG if you can't beat it join it.
Go to the after Christmas sales at all the Big K and Target stores. Maybe you can buy a scrabble game and teach the family some big city architectural words like cornices or balustrades. Do some cheap food shopping on the way home (you know it's half of what you pay in NY).
Embrace it.

Sounds great! We're coming over! ; )

Half my family live in places like that, which explains why I don't see them very often! And they love it! they pity me and my city existance when they aren't 'afeared for my life'...

"BRG if you can't beat it join it......Go to the after Christmas sales at all the Big K and Target stores."
NOOOOO.....Don't make me walk amongst them!!!

So what are everyone's New Years resolutions?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at December 31, 2008 12:14 PM
Don't do it BRG!
I went to a KMart...once. I regret it to this day. The reason I went? I didn't believe that they sold guns and ammo. Obviously, I was wrong. I stood there in stark disbelief and then begged them to get me out of there QUICK!
Posted by: cobblehiller at December 31, 2008 12:19 PM
1. To get a job.
After that, it's all gravy...
Posted by: cobblehiller at December 31, 2008 12:20 PM
"So what are everyone's New Years resolutions?"
-Every one of my posts on brownstoner is grammatically correct and with no misspelled words.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 12:25 PM
BRG...resolutions should be realistic.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 31, 2008 12:31 PM
Mortgages at 4.0%
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 31, 2008 12:31 PM
I'm getting a bigger gun at K-Mart.

"BRG...resolutions should be realistic."
I could try it for a day or two...this spelling thing!
"So what are everyone's New Years resolutions?"
Seriously, to step up my pursuit of my passion and hopefully land a full time job doing what I love to do (that’s what I said last year and I came close).
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 12:42 PM
Nice, Sam, nice.
Posted by: cobblehiller at December 31, 2008 12:43 PM
"Mortgages at 4.0%"
This would make me a happy, happy man.

BTW, DIBS....
Why am I short changed? And what do I have to defend???
Speak up.....I’m here now!
(You didn't think I'd see this, did you?)
“And then there's Biff and BRG. Some people just get short changed in life. Too bad they're not even here to defend themselves...nonetheless.”

But I'm wishing I were going to cw's. Those drinks sound really good.
Posted by: mopar at December 31, 2008 1:11 PM
BRG, I just came back yesterday from one of those towns, and boy is it stressful. A certain kind of beauty in the rural parts, but oh, the rest! My family feels similarly about my choices. The weird thing is they all grew up here in the city and CHOSE to move to mall country. Peanut butter and jelly pizza anyone?
Posted by: Susan Elkins at December 31, 2008 1:15 PM
DIBS...geez, knock me down when I’m not here ;)
You and Cobble were going back and forth about funny intelligent people.

I have a feeling that all your families in all those little towns are extremely happy to see their Brooklyn relatives head back home as well.

Sam, you took the words right out of my mouth!

"Dinner with friends in beautiful old apt overlooking evil Times Square."
Mopar, luckily you're not IN the mayhem, but above it all.
Susan, while the rural is quite beautiful. I look out the window and see mountains, I can never imagine this lifestyle for myself. I can visit for a couple of days and than I'm itching for the concrete jungle.
How do people exist here? Without sidewalks, the local corner store, glass skyscrapers, plethora of restaurants, townhouses and apartment living. How do they shop in huge warehouse sized stores and an enclosed concrete block full of shops? They get in their car to go everywhere, even from one end of the mall parking lot to the other. By 9pm everything is closed, no one is out and about. There’s nowhere to walk to, no neighbor to pass on the street.
I’ll be glad to be back to NYC!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 1:41 PM
Awwwww, BRG! My heart is going out to you. Seriously. I'm "from" southern Indiana. The heartland. Hoosier land. The Bible Belt... the home of the appliqued Christmas sweater. Our home town has no restaurants left beyond the Bloomin' Onion kinda place (Fridays, Olive Garden, Red Lobster...) Make your own fun! It can be done. And your return will feel nearly magical.
Happy new year everyone!
Posted by: Nokilissa at December 31, 2008 1:42 PM
Sam, we are great with each other in moderation! I would love to see my nieces more though. When they're little they come to the city and love it. Then their parents get scared and pound the awefulness of it all into them so that they never leave them for city schools or city life. No matter how it might effect their career path. Not all smaller-town people are like this, I'm just talking about my family. Next week I'll feel rosier.
Posted by: Susan Elkins at December 31, 2008 1:46 PM
Don't knock the bloomin onion, Nokilissa
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 31, 2008 1:50 PM
Btw, I must clarify, that I LIKE rural life. I have a house in PR that is in the country and I love it and the people. It's the mall mentality that's off-putting and seemingly uninspired.
Posted by: Susan Elkins at December 31, 2008 1:52 PM
Bloomin Onion has about 2,300 calories....YUMMY!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 1:55 PM
"appliqued Christmas sweater" are worn by people who consume 2,300 calorie appetizers.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 1:57 PM
Are you going out tonight for the Olive garden's all-you-can-eat pasta tonight, BRG?
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 31, 2008 1:59 PM
Sorry Dave. Not knockin' it!
I literally saw a woman wearing light-up/flashing ornament earrings last Christmas when I was home. It's a heartland thing.

Oh Behave Dave (1:59)!
Posted by: Nokilissa at December 31, 2008 2:07 PM
I will be in SOHO in my aunt's pad cheering it up with another 30 of my family members. Good luck in the new year to all.

DIBS, maybe you're into the Olive Garden thing, but I'm hitting TGIF tonight, I hear their New Year's Eve celebration is heavenly...it'll be just like a friday night here.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 2:11 PM
Philadelphia is definitely "small town" compared to NYC. And you get the added benefit of more crime!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 31, 2008 2:14 PM
Those ugly "world's greatest..." sweaters are designed right here in NYC. Don't ask me how I know.

my new years resolution is to try to try to save a bit of my paycheck every week. im terrrrrrrible at saving but i have to force myself to it. it's pathetic to be almost 32 and have zero savings.

BRG...I met a guy on a different kind of site who goes by Bayridge Guy!!!! Do you know him? He's Chinese.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 31, 2008 2:20 PM
DIBS...Yes, I know everybody in Bay Ridge!
I doubt I know him from the site you visited, though.
If you're going to be in my nabe, give me a holler, I'll take you out for lunch or dinner....unless, you're eating with BRGuy!

My new year's wish is to learn freakin' Spanish! I've already got the books. I'm telling you, it's going to happen. I can't help it. It's a white thing ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Joy and Merriment to All!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 31, 2008 3:10 PM
dibs i actually did start a 401k two years ago. i contribute just 1 percent of my paycheck tho. my company doesnt match however. so guess in a sense im saving, but that money doesnt seem real to me like a savings account would seem real. plus in an emergency how will i access my 401k money that fast? plus there's penalties right? i need something in case of a real emergency. tho my fav. astrologer susan miller said this ... :) for any other aquarians heed this!:
(this is just the beginning of it, dont want to put too much here) you can look her up and read the rest of your 2009 horoscope! she is very accurate and very specific and is true everytime down to the dates.. for instance i had to move in august and in february of last year due to bad things, and of course she says that in the horoscope!! ..
After a long wait, your golden year has arrived, dear Aquarius! On January 5, Jupiter will enter Aquarius and crown you the celestial favorite, a title you have not held since 1997. What lies before you is a glorious year of good fortune. You will have good health, support from VIPs, a real shot at finding true love if you're single, and an opportunity to grasp your dream goal. We only get approximately seven of these magnificent years in a lifetime, and 2009 will be one of those shining years for you.
The ancient astrologers always wrote about the power of these rare years when Jupiter conjuncts your Sun. You will attract many new people to your path and you will benefit from your association with many of them. Those people will range from the introduction to new business associates, to new friends, and of course, to meeting that one special person. If you are married or attached, your optimism will be so strong as to color everything you do - your partner won't be able to resist you. If you feel ready for a baby or a move to a larger house, it looks like your partner will agree. As I said, this is a year like no other you've seen in a long time - twelve years to be exact.
As an Aquarian, your sign rules all the sciences, from high technology to the social sciences. Your perceptive mind tells you what is missing in society - and what is needed next. As the great innovator sign, you are always a step ahead of others. You are used to seeing that most people have no idea what you are talking about when you first propose one of your forward-thinking ideas. No matter, it never troubled you being a black sheep - you reveled in the role! You never cared what other people thought of you or your ideas. You had built your own yardstick for success, and in a way, you were always your own hardest critic anyway. Being free from caring what other people thought or said about you has always freed you to follow your own drummer. In the year ahead, you may be a bit bewildered to find that others will catch up with you, see your wisdom for a change, and praise your efforts.
Your instincts, opinions, tastes, and direction will be followed and hailed as brilliant, and you will chuckle over the fact that everyone has come 'round to your way of thinking. It won't always be this way, but it certainly will make your task easier this year! Knowing this, you should put forth your biggest dreams in 2009 while you have such extraordinary favor, for if you do, you will get a big running start. This year will start you on a 12-year cycle, so the initiations you make now will carry you forward at least that long, if not longer.
In the year ahead, you will be offered an array of choices by Jupiter, whose whole job it will be to please and delight you. The only danger is that you will have so many choices you may be tempted to run in too many directions. Choose carefully and direct your attention to the goals that hold the greatest potential.
Of all the signs, as an Aquarius, you've been among the most beleaguered signs. You were first tested by Saturn opposed to your Sun, and then beginning last February and August 2008, by the start of the eclipses in Aquarius, the opposite sign of Leo. Saturn and the eclipses were asking you to reinvent yourself, and from mid-2005 you've been doing just that.

As opposed to the 28 pizzerias, 7 99 cents stores and 143 lotto/convenience stores in Bay Ridge. :-)

Rob, where does it say you will sock away money in 2009? Did I miss it? Also that bit about how at first no one will understand your "forward thinking ideas" -- do you think Hannible might be an Aquarius too?
Posted by: mopar at December 31, 2008 5:15 PM
No Hannible is not an Aquarius. He is in Time Square looking for a free toilet to pee in. The Mayor did away with the free bathrooms because he had to send the rebate checks to those poor homeowners.

My New Year's resolution is to really back into art again. If I'm lucky, I even have shows again. Been a long time.
A wonderful and safe and happy New Year to everyone. (My G-d, rob! that post was so long I read half of it before I realized it wasn't a Montrose Morris post)
