Fulton Street Goes Two-Way Again

fulton-street-121708.jpg
At some point in the last 24 hours, the Clinton Hill stretch of Fulton Street, reduced to a one-way work site for more than two years, finally re-opened to two-way traffic. Let's hope it's not too late for the businesses that held on as the mismanaged $5 million project took a year longer than planned. Nice going, DDC! Related: we expect to have news on the Fulton BID in the next day or two.

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Do you have a CCTV system from Lodi that shows you what's going on in Clinton Hill Whatless? Why are you so interested in our hood? I know you're not that that clueless guy on Putnam Ave. that my neighbor swears is The What.

Look both ways when you cross the street, people!

Posted by: Lothar of the Clinton Hill People at December 17, 2008 10:36 AM

Putnam Ave is a good guess for What's address actually. I am waiting for the day when we bump into each other.

Posted by: wasder at December 17, 2008 10:41 AM

Going both ways isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 10:41 AM

I concur with Dave. Seems like a double edged sword here. I have seen quiet, safe streets turn to sh*t after this change was enacted (such as on the LES).

Posted by: Nokilissa at December 17, 2008 10:44 AM

In this case Noklissa, there is no way this will be a bad thing. Bus traffic will return to the street now bringing alot of foot traffic back to what has been a no man's land for two years.

Posted by: wasder at December 17, 2008 10:47 AM

I was actually making a joke Nokilissa. I think wasder is right about the necessary bus traffic

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 17, 2008 10:53 AM

Ah. Feeling oppositional today. And the Park Slope thread got me cranky.

Posted by: Nokilissa at December 17, 2008 11:02 AM

What? That's totally wrong, Nok. 2 way streets are way more friendly than one way. Traffic moves slower for one thing. Compare 5th/7th Avs to Court/Smith streets, for instance. Which would you rather cross and shop at?

We should turn PPS and 8th Ave in PS to 2-ways! Is there a group advocating this?

I almost had a head-on yesterday while driving down/up Fulton. (That didn't sound right.)

For those of us who take buses, this is great news! (unless we live in northwestern Crown Heights I guess)

Posted by: rf at December 17, 2008 2:21 PM

That's just not my experience cmu. Two way makes it an artery from either direction. How could traffic be lessened and slower when you open it up in both directions? Witness Union Street in Park Slope!

Posted by: Nokilissa at December 17, 2008 4:07 PM

It felt so funny and seemed strange to drive only on the right. They took so long with this project I cant get used to the two way street.I don't think the MTA got the news cause the buses were still running on Atlantic when I last looked.
