Bed Stuy Band Bound for Inauguration

boys-and-girls-high-school-1208.jpgThe Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band, pride of the Boys and Girls High School in Bed Stuy, has been chosen from over 1,400 high school bands around the country to play at Obama's inauguration next month. The only problem? They have to pay their own way. As a result, the school needs help raising money and finding lodging in the D.C. area. Checks can be made out to the Brooklyn Music and Arts Program c/o Boys and Girls High School, 1700 Fulton Street, 11213. For more info, call 718-467-1700 x 765.

Here's a suggestion: maybe the Obama campaign could cover total transportation and lodging costs for this band with some of the $30 million of its leftover campaign money. My understanding is that they're allowed to donate to charity with those funds. It's a no-brainer.

You're white, right? What are you supposed to say?

That does suck that they have to pay their own way. I had no idea Brooklyn had its own stepping band!! Where do they usually perform? I'd love to take my children.

If you've never seen the Brooklyn Steppers, you are truly missing out. Their amazing and as you know, Brooklyn schools are not known for their marching bands.

I've seen them perform during halftime at basketball games at Madison Square Garden, at Marty's inaugurations, on Eastern Parkway as part of the celebration of the Brooklyn Museum's facade renovations.

Is this the marching band featured in Dave Chapelle's Block Party?
