A Starbucks for Sheepshead Bay?
Starbucks may be shuttering some shops across the country, but at least one new one may be opening: the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Gravesend Neck Road could be home to a 1,500-square-foot L-shaped Starbucks with a drive-thru, says Courier-Life. CB15 okayed Starbuck's app for a zoning variance, though some folks worry having a drive-thru next to a bus stop could pose some dangers. Still, the nabe is fairly used to these kinds of shops. "That area of Nostrand Avenue is already home to a number of other fast-food joints and drive-thrus."

There's a drive-through Starbucks in Coney Island on Cropsey Avenue. There's also one on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Dobbs Ferry. And probably many, many more.

Who, aside from DIBS of course, can actually afford Starbucks at this point? Or is it more to the point that it's an inexpensive luxury item?

This very interesting.. We used to joke if they put a Starbucks in Asshat Hill that mean the "eagle has landed".

NUD (Non Urban Dictate) is the acronym for a very subtle and little-known marketing term specifically directed toward people of color. “Non Urban Dictate” These three words essentially mean that a company is not interested in the Black consumer. A NUD label means that a company does not want their marketing and advertising material s placed in media that claim an urban audience (black folks) as their main target.
With all the Asshats moving into the Ghetto you would think Starbucks would follow them but they figured this was short lived and when the Mutant Asset Bubble implodes, the Asshats would leave en masse! I bet gentrification had burned Starbucks before!

Hi Cobblehiller your "hood" is consider "Starbucks Safe" but in Asshat Hill they still have Chicken Shacks,LMMFAO. Cobblehiller I hope you are doing OK during the implosion of the Mutant Asset Bubble, it's very rough out there now. People are losing their jobs left and right and still you have the children acting stupid.
There is plenty of bad economic data coming this way and 2009 will be a horror show..

if you just buy PLAIN coffee, starbucks isnt that much more. seriously. i actually do like their coffee, but ive been pilfering my roommates coffee these days when he leaves in the morning i just drink whats left in the pot so i stopped buying coffee outside. but when im not so broke i do like the occassional starbucks coffee. their special drinks however will go up to like 7 bucks. but little pretentious cafes are just as expensive really and they serve you with attitude. at least people at starbucks are friendly. even tho i hate hate hate the people who clearly have no jobs but sit there all day on their 3000 dollar macbooks. barf.

My friend's ex-girlfriend is one of the people at Starbucks that decides where they put the new stores. The odd part was, she never left Corporate HQ in Seattle. How is that possible? I mean how the heck would she know the corner of Clinton and Dekalb from Gravesend and Nostrand in Brooklyn?

I grew up here DIBS, it's my neighborhood. My nephews live around the corner from me. My family friends all live here. Yes, it's more expensive than I would like. But it's my life, it's not a "lifestyle" choice.

I am officially unemployed as of 12.31.08. There was an announcement in the news today about my current/temporary place of employ. Apparently I won't be alone when I pack up my desk. No sign of work yet. I'm bracing for worst.

When siting new franchises, they can get very fine-grained data from the census on population density, household income, commuting patterns, etc. They know where they and their competitors have outlets. They could see that this area of southern Brooklyn is under-Starbucked relative to the market size, and decide they want a location on a heavily-traveled car and pedestrian route, preferably at the intersection of two or more bus lines, within a 5-minute walk of x-thousand residents and y-thousand workers, and have GIS do the rest. Then they get in touch with some commercial brokers to see what's available in their target area, find out during their due diligence that a drive-through lane requires a Special Permit, and soon enough they're at Community Board 15.

First off, Starbucks aren't franchised with the exception of Magic Johnson WHO DOES OPEN STARBUCKS IN "URBAN" AREAS. Next point, your friend's ex-girl friend didn't choose the sites. She might have helped negotiate the lease or decide if a particular building's logistics worked. Starbucks relies on different regional brokers who know the market place to provide them with sites. Yes they look at demographics, but as you know, they only do census studies every 10 years, so can't rely on it for everything. I like how people say they can't afford a cup of Starbucks as if the marginal additional cost for a regular coffee there vs. your bodega's instant coffee is putting you over. Maybe you should get rid of your internet access and cable.
