502 Metropolitan Avenue Revealed
Now we know what Kellogg's Diner's neighbor is going to look like: The Eagle ran this rendering on Friday of the 200,000-square-foot mixed-use building rising between the diner and the BQE in Williamsburg. The 140-unit rental building was designed by Meltzer/Mandl Architects and already has landed Duane Reade as an anchor retail tenant.

is that far enough from the toxic waste dump that it's safe to live there?

It's next to the BQE, and I believe there's a superfund site up the street on Meeker. But... that's the other side of the BQE!

i guess if the oil decomp fumes don't get you, the pollution off the highway will.

Is this interesting in any way?
Posted by: sam at December 22, 2008 1:25 PM
Yeah, it's interesting because there are a trillion gigantic "luxury" loft buildings that have suddenly sprung up out of nowhere on this formerly forlorn and deserted area of Williamsburg near the Lorimer stop. But of course they're only half finished.
Talk about a sudden change of feel in the neighborhood.
Also this stretch is notable because Dumont restaurant is right there. Not because of the diner, which has the reputation of being the worst diner in the world (I dunno, never tried it).

Hey Sam - if i were you i would start plugging these new modern buildings. If not you might get more people doing modern renos of brownstones, and we know how much you hate that!

@ Mopar
Kellogg's is absolutely horrendous. The new renovation looks great - but the food is terrible!

Heh, I was wondering if the food had gotten better along with the facade. That is truly sad. It could have so much potential. How hard can it be to make a grill cheese and shepard's pie? I mean, GEEZ.

kelloggs diner is not the worst diner in the world, but it is not great, and ironically, not cheap! especially when dumont has probably some of the best brunch entrees i've ever had. wierdly, i hadn't gone their for breakfast ever until a couple of months ago even tho i went there for dinner the same month they opened years ago. if you have a car, it's very easy to park around there, so try dumont! they have just perfect, perfect eggs. great steak too! it's crazy good, and a steal compared to kelloggs!! haha.
on the real estate front, the entire area is getting built up and is a good deal. there are steal wonderful old italian shops right around there, like a fish shop, a butcher, a bakery, etc.. and.. a unbelievable old barber shop on leonard that is like going back in time. extremely good for the typical shave and hair cut. throw in ps 132, and this neighborhood is a buy even in this economy. i live west of the BQE, but find myself on this side quite often.
