17 Prospect Park Closes

17-Prospect-Park-West-1208.jpg
A reader just tipped us off to the fact that the sale of 17 Prospect Park West, better known as the former home of actors Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany, has now closed. And it looks like the screen stars almost got their full asking price: Public records show that the 5,200-square-foot limestone mansion closed for $8,450,000 on November 17. Highest price ever for Park Slope, right?

Cue the following:

Post A: See, things are not as bad as everyone thinks.
Post B: This sale is an outlier and in no way representative of the overall state of the real estate market.

I'll go with Post B.

Did it sell to a black family or were those whites displaced by other whites. Net, net we need to know.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 12:12 PM

Come on DIBS, it's Park Slope.
White on White with a smear of white.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 12:17 PM

^^^^ joke. Don't get on my case anybody.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 12:18 PM

Grammar. Spelling counts, too.

Posted by: r1b2 at December 11, 2008 12:23 PM

BRG...no one outside of NYC knows what a "smear" is. Nor do they know what a black and white cookie is and you cannot order a "coffee regular" anywhere else in the world. But most bodega employees don't know how to make a proper coffee regular anyway.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 12:23 PM

I bought it. To get this gorgeous place, I'm willing to have earnest passers-by ask me, when I come out to walk my Russian Wolfhounds in the park, when my employers are coming back.

Cheers!

Posted by: Montrose Morris at December 11, 2008 12:26 PM

i asked for a coffee regular the other day in chinatown and the lady looked at me like i was retarded.

then I realized I was in chinatown.

Posted by: Santa at December 11, 2008 12:27 PM

Plus if its that kind of "smear" its actually "schmear."

Posted by: wasder at December 11, 2008 12:28 PM

You're right DIBS...I should have used 'schmear' or 'shmear' to confuse some more.

Besides, who cares about people outside of NYC.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 12:29 PM

Wasder, you beat me to it!

My lifetime neighbor here in Cobble Hill has been dealing with that for over 40 years. Although he says he kind of likes it sometimes because it gets him out of having to talk to idiots!

Typical conversation: Idiot at the door: "Is the owner at home?", Owner: "No, I'm sorry, Mr. Smith isn't here right now." Idiot: "Do you know when he will be?" Owner: "Nope, sorry, I just work here."

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 11, 2008 1:02 PM

Sad but hilarious cobblehiller.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 1:08 PM

"You're a xenophobe BRG."
Yes, DIBS, I am and don't forget as you previously labelled me a racist ;)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 1:11 PM

Damn, if I didn't just have a nice, leisurely lunch, I think I could have beaten Prodigal Son to this one! But I'm so glad he said that, anyway.

"I don't hate short people, some of my favorite people are short. Like my nephews for instance!"
cobblehiller, good one, but are you saying you don't like neices as much as nephews???? :-)

Glad to see you are "movin' on up" MM!! You should play this owner/employee thing for all it's worth. You may never have to pay for anything on Seventh Ave. Just tell them your employer sent you and have them send the "owner" the bill.

Posted by: slopefarm at December 11, 2008 1:38 PM

Biff, you're being too polite. What did you have for lunch to mellow you out?

I'm going to head out now to grab something. I hope to find something to make me crabby.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 1:41 PM

"Biff, you're being too polite. What did you have for lunch to mellow you out?"

BRG, I had liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 1:47 PM

Correct, I am a NIECE HATER - THERE I SAID IT! God forgive me! Is there a 12 step program for that?

May I recommend the Crab cakes, BRG?

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 11, 2008 1:47 PM

"Correct, I am a NIECE HATER - THERE I SAID IT! God forgive me! Is there a 12 step program for that?"

I'm not sure, but if one was offered by the DILF in the red hoodie, I'm sure it would be a popular program!

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 1:52 PM

Indeed, I think Nokilissa, who has probably never hated a niece in her life, would sign up first!

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 11, 2008 1:55 PM

Biff, you inspired me...no fava beans...but lentil soup.

I'm glad to hear you like liver ;)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 2:08 PM

Ordering a coffee "regular" is actually quite common in New England -- but there "regular" means half and half and a ton of sugars.

Also, black and white cookies are actually from upstate, and they're *really* not called black and white cookies; they're half moon cookies.

Hidden posts? Spare Ribs? Obvious? My head is spinning with this new information. I admit it, I am LOST.

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 11, 2008 2:20 PM

Maybe if you reassemble all the letters in BRG's posts about spare ribs, you will come up with a hidden message!

Quote of the Day
I remember walking from Park Slope to Pratt once, about 10 years ago. It was desolate and empty. I remember passing a huge empty red brick building on the corner of Gates and I forget what, thinking, this is a beauty, but who's gonna want to live here. Look at the neighborhood now...it's come a long way.

cobblehiller, most people, like yourself, are humble about such things and don't need to remind everyone. Townhouselady...

I just posted something about that in the Census thread.

Personally I find the amount of comments by a few select individuals (which mostly revolves around really super immature back and forth) to be ruining the site for some people. I've definitely noticed fewer and fewer actual people commenting, with 90% of the commenting done by 5 people, which I think scares other people away because they don't want to get involved with the nonsense.

There isn't one thread you can go to now without it being infected by these 5 same people.

Go talk on MSN MESSENGER!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 3:41 PM

Yes, 11217. And again, at least I had one or two on topic here. You, similar to your census post are still 0-1.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 3:44 PM

DIBS, to quote 11217 from yesterday in a comment to cobblehiller, don't be jealous that he's young, handsome and owns his own home.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 3:48 PM

The only thing worse than chatting amongst friends on a blog is jumping from thread to thread telling people not to chat amongst friends on a blog. You didn't seem to mind all the personal back and forth when you wanted to get set up with Rob, 11217.

Anyway...moving on to a well-deserved (finally) QOTD...

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 3:53 PM

But wait just a minute here...this wasn't just a chat room, we had a topic, and that was BRGs quotes!!

Posted by: cobblehiller at December 11, 2008 3:59 PM

I do not talk about personal matters on EVERY SINGLE thread, EVERY SINGLE day, Biff.

There's a difference.

You two are really becoming sad and pathetic how you think you can bully the rest of the people on here.

I've become barely interested in most of what you all have to say as the days go on, and while it will be a real shame to cut myself off from coming here so regularly, I do think it's getting to be about that time.

You all have in the past and continue to use this website as your own personal chatroom and I find it disrespectful to those who want to use it for the use it was intended.

The price on this house is outstanding and I love it.

There, I'm 1-1. More than I can say for your 1-100 today, Dave.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 4:01 PM

There wasn't anything here to discuss. Brownstoner just pointed out that this sale closed and, coincidentally, was the highest sale in Brooklyn

In the census thread c'mon. Census just confirm what everyone knows all along. It just put specific numbers to the trends.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 4:03 PM

biff/dave/brg,

no one is saying that you shouldn't engage in any banter on this site. everyone does it from time to time, and you often crack me up. the concern is that you guys are doing it every day, in multiple threads, with a very high comment volume, and with various look-at-me inside jokes and tangents, all of which in combination make the site less pleasant to read.

please dial it back a couple of notches. i'm sure your fellow users will greatly appreciate it.

love,
z

Posted by: z at December 11, 2008 4:08 PM

You all sometimes don't even give a thread a chance of having a real discussion. There are tons of comments on kitchen wallpaper sometimes, and while that not be my cup of tea, someone else might genuinely want to talk about that.

None of the things on this website are about life or death and require commenting, but to suggest that somehow census data and the highest price paid for a home in Park Slope is unworthy because YOU don't want to talk about it, is really quite rude.

I would have loved to have a real discussion on the census thread, but I'm not going to waste my time writing comments that get lost in 100's about DILF'S.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 4:08 PM

Totally agree, 11217. When I start to see a thread of mostly Biff, BRG, DIBS and few others, I know I'm basically crashing a public IM session that has nothing to do with the post. It's deadly dull. Mr. B, please make them play privately.

Posted by: crusty at December 11, 2008 4:09 PM

"You two are really becoming sad and pathetic how you think you can bully the rest of the people on here."
Bully people? If anyone's bullied by us, they really must have a problem. As you've said yourself, 11217, it's a blog. Relax.

"I've become barely interested in most of what you all have to say as the days go on"
So? Are we supposed to care?

"and while it will be a real shame to cut myself off from coming here so regularly, I do think it's getting to be about that time."
Sayonara. Have a great life. Oh yeah you will, because you're young, handsome and own your own home.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 4:10 PM

I engage in off-topic banter on occasion so, by no means am I coming with guns drawn. I just think that you're being a bit selfish. For example...

Snarkslope's posted on Brownstone:

Perfect example of you sad attempt to bully, Biff.

You are a real piece of work. I've seen at least 3 or 4 people agree with me in this thread and the other in the last few minutes alone, but you continue to act like a child.

So sad you can't just take it to heart and agree that you have been slightly annoying.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 4:15 PM

THL,

See...and I always really enjoyed Snark's comments! A lot.

And I haven't even noticed he was gone, cause who wants to go through and find out with having to wade through 150 comments by Biff, Dave and BRG!

Not that anyone cares, but I'm going to be the next to jump ship if this doesn't get cleaned up, cause I think the quality of the blog is suffering due to a few people.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 4:18 PM

z/THL, I respect you both and you've made the point in a very congenial manner. I'm not going away but will try to reign it in and stay on topic; at least until it seems the interest is gone or if others get off topic. Maybe an off-topic forum thread like we had last week is a good idea. Although I still hope 11217 jumps ship.

"Perfect example of you sad attempt to bully, Biff."
11217, you think that was bullying because I suggested you leave when you said you wanted to? Seriously, calm down, dude. And the 3 or 4 people who agree with you pales in comparison to the number who expressed negativity towards you in that 220 post thread yesterday.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 4:22 PM

Yes, that was one of the longest threads we had and it was dominated by 11217. it also seemed like one of the most mean spirited as well.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 4:25 PM

"You all have in the past and continue to use this website as your own personal chatroom"

As you have used it as a dating pool!

"You all sometimes don't even give a thread a chance of having a real discussion."
Well, why don't YOU give it a chance. Why don't you opine on it and see where it goes. Instead of commenting on the comments, why not post about the thread.

11217...Shall we rewind to yesterday's 'Recover Sooner Than Later?' Thread?
Maybe you should count how many assinine posts were yours and how many were by others.

At least some of our posts are entertaining and not displaying immaturity and a disregard for humans.

"You are a real piece of work. I've seen at least 3 or 4 people agree with me in this thread and the other in the last few minutes alone, but you continue to act like a child."

How many disagreed with you yesterday??????

"So sad you can't just take it to heart and agree that you have been slightly annoying."
Based on your track record from yesterday, You are slightly annoying indeed, 11217!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 4:29 PM

Dave,

You dominate every thread. That's my point.

And not only are your comments oftentimes very harsh, but are more often than not, nonsense. Fine every once in a while, but every single day...?!

I'd like to hope a comment or two of mine was heard by someone, as I've read and learned some really great things from others...Denton, benson, wasder, Montrose, Polemicist, among others...

Can't say I've learned much from you Dave, except how best to pick up an asian prostitute from craigslist.

I also see comments from you on the House of the Day thread.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 4:41 PM

I think one of the problems is that you take things that people post here too seriously; which is why that battle erupted yesterday.

I certainly can't remeber what we've had run ins in the past over because once the day is over I think we all start back again at square one. And I'm a Scorpio. They don't forget anything especially when someone wrongs them. This just isn't reality here.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 4:41 PM

I also see comments from you, Dave on the Atlantic Ave building and the Garden of the day thread.

But keep up the delusion that you've only posted on this and the census thread.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 4:44 PM

Cobble, they weren't puzzles for you!.
You just pointed out that I sometimes set up my lines.
Sometimes, to amuse myself, my posts do have double meaning so, I threw out a few on that thread (What the Census Says About Us), and one on this one, also (which no one picke up, by the way!!)

No need to look at it again. Like I said, it's very hard to decipher. No one will ever get it.
Maybe, 11217 should spend some quiet time with it.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 4:46 PM

11217, last I checked, we're allowed to post wherever we want. If you hate the nonsense so much and have something to add, why don't you go join an active thread that is staying on a topic you're interested in instead of going all over the place counting DIBS' comments? Seriously.

Posted by: Biff Champion at December 11, 2008 4:47 PM

Just trying to point out some facts, Biff.

I know you don't like those, but I am allowed to post whatever I want also...just like you are.

I never said, nor would I ever say someone can't post whatever they want, as many times as they want to.

I am simply stating that you guys are starting to annoy the freak out of me and it seems a number of other really great brownstoner posters.

That's all.

If you don't see it, you're just being ridiculous.

"I am allowed to post whatever I want also...just like you are."
11217, please remember that you're the one trying to get us to stop posting, not vice versa.

"I never said, nor would I ever say someone can't post whatever they want, as many times as they want to."
No, you just run around counting their posts and complaining about it.

"I am simply stating that you guys are starting to annoy the freak out of me and it seems a number of other really great brownstoner posters."
I like facts, 11217. Can you please go to each thread and take a poll and count the exact number of posters we're annoying. We'll compare it to the number you've annoyed over the past few weeks.

Regardless, you've actually achieved what you wanted. You didn't bully us, but you've bored me out of this thread. Congratulations. Now you can run wild posting on topic.

The top of the market does not seem to be hurting any. That at least is a positive sign. This mansion is a little too cold and formal for may taste. I love it when I don't like houses I couldn't afford anyway. I prefer the other limestone mansion on Montgomery Pl. Was that the one that some people questioned the term "mansion"?
That was a funny back and forth. BRG had the best comment something like "if it isn't the Breakers, it isn't a mansion in my book".

Posted by: sam at December 11, 2008 5:06 PM

Biff,

You don't listen very well. Talking to you is liking talking to a toddler. Should I slow it down for you a little bit...?

I'm not asking that ANYONE stop posting.

I'm asking (as are A NUMBER of other people) that you tone down the 50 comments in a row about nonsense. There are places for that like chatrooms, and instant messenger.

Jokes are great. In moderation. When a thread becomes 150 posts in a row with you, Dave and BRG stroking each other's genitals about how funny you think you are, it gets a little old for the rest of the crowd.

Posted by: 11217 at December 11, 2008 5:10 PM

I certainly added something constructive and to the point in each and every post; something you have yet to do. I knew you'd go back and look through the other posts. I added the parrot and QOTD posts after you started this so I didn't think they "counted" LOL

My nastiness in QOTD was aimed at the What which was reinforced by evertone else responding to the What..and, nastiness to the What doesn't count as nastiness!!!!

Please read my 4:41 post here again.

sam...did you click on the link to the original discussion? Those rooms are simply incredible and worth of the "Bricks and Brownstones" book

11217, your standard response of calling everyone you disagree with immature, as you just did in another thread and did with cobblehiller yesterday, is getting old. Not everyone who disagrees with you, and there are a NUMBER of them, is immature. Go back to the 220 thread post yesterday and read the criticisms directed towards you and maybe you can learn from them. Take a look in the mirror (at your runway model great looks) and ask what's bothering you so much in your own life that is making SO MANY PEOPLE HERE notice a real change for the worse in your attitude. Time for some self-reflection, son.

Things are "that bad". It's just that this buyer is not from Wall Street. It's a Google person.

Posted by: superstooper at December 11, 2008 5:16 PM

Adios amigos. Party to go to.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at December 11, 2008 5:25 PM

'you, Dave and BRG stroking each other's genitals'....hhhmmmm.
Holding my comment!!

11217, real mature indeed! You want to throw in a toy, while you're at it

Posted by: bayridgegirl at December 11, 2008 5:27 PM

I've never heard of Paul Bettany, so I Googled him. The dude looks like an exhumed corpse!

Posted by: East New York at December 11, 2008 5:33 PM

A google person had enough dough to buy this mansion? That's impressive! A lot of people still have a lot of cash. We are not in the GREAT DEPRESSION that TV news is trying to talk us into. Although a lot of folks are suffering. Of course a lot of folks are always suffering no matter what the economy. Unemployment is about 6%? That's high, but I mean, 94% of us are employed. It isn't the Armagedon Katie Couric is pushing.

Posted by: sam at December 11, 2008 6:23 PM

Wait, Paul Bettany is an actor, no?

Rob, where are you? Have you been auditioning?

Posted by: mopar at December 11, 2008 7:36 PM

Dave, the interiors of this house are in Bricks and Brownstones? How interesting, I will check it out when I get home. I have both editions.

Posted by: sam at December 11, 2008 8:56 PM

agree with 11217 and z. enough already.

Posted by: czar at December 11, 2008 9:56 PM

All cash purchase.

Regarding this house, from a NY Mag 2005 article on Connelly: "Connelly’s dream home soon had “two massive floods that completely trashed the whole kitchen,” she says, eyes flashing wide, fingernails flying. “Water coming out of the light fixtures. Pipes burst. Twice! They dispatched the Fire Department.”

"Cobble, they weren't puzzles for you!."

Oh thank god BRG! I was going crazy looking for some word puzzle - change the first letter of each word with the word before it, take the capitals letters and rearrange them...you have no idea...scramble the letters in the sentence, try it backwards...I love a puzzle but I was stumped!
