Streetlevel: Closeout Shop for the Slope

Maybe it's a sign of the times that this prime piece of real estate, on the corner of 9th Street and 5th Avenue, is going to be a discount shop. DII is now the name of the discount department stores known as Dee & Dee. The space was formerly occupied by Eckerd, but the company was purchased by Rite Aid, conveniently located one block away. Ever seen a free-for-all battle over a pile of clothes in the original Filene's Basement in Boston?????

Lol - as if it's any worse than the Rite-Aid it replaced - both shops sell 95% crap but serve a need.

"Ever seen a free-for-all battle over a pile of clothes in the original Filene's Basement in Boston?????"
I fought many of those battles myself. A friend of mine met his boyfriend while searching for boxers.

There used to be a Dee & Dee on the corner of 5th Ave and 86th Street in Bay Ridge. It closed a few years ago and is now a Chase bank. Rumor had it that Dee & Dee was owned by the same people who own Century21 Dept Stores. It wasn't so much a discount store as a real "schlock" store. I'm talking large bins of loose socks, undies and shoes of the poorest quality. Maybe they will make in better for Park Slope.

Snark...I'm not going to tell you what happened to me at Filene's years ago; at least not under these circumstances.

Did somebody get a bargain?

I will not incriminate myself by answering. It was all back in the 80s and you know what that was like!!!! More on topic, I got one of the nicest suits I've ever owned there.

I think that for all those that criticize Park Slope and say it's one big Yuppie heaven, the opening of this store shows not only that it's not true, but shows that PS is a little more diverse than many people give it credit for.
While a Trader Joe's might have been nice, we really have everything we could possibly need in Park Slope. And all within walking distance.
I think it's nice to see something like this open, even if I may never shop there.

It shows that no nabe is spared in this economy. Yes, we've fallen on hard times. One word, Degentrification! You see, it's a buyer's market, even Dee&Dee is relocating from downtown brooklyn to PS.

Wait, didn't there used to be a Dee&Dee on 5th Avenue around 13th or 14th streets a few years ago? Maybe I'm losing my mind....

"Wait, didn't there used to be a Dee&Dee on 5th Avenue around 13th or 14th"
Yes. It appears to be moving contrary to the prevalent southward drift of 99cent stores.

Ahhh, youth...
Ahhh, statute of limitations...

"I fought many of those battles myself. A friend of mine met his boyfriend while searching for boxers."
A step down from a boxer, I presume? An investment banker, perchance?

Why not another Real Estate office, or a nail salon.

Everyone needs socks.
