Streetlevel: Brooklyn Heights Gristedes Reopens

McBrooklyn stopped by the grand reopening of Gristedes on 101 Henry Street over the weekend, and had this to say: "Neighborhood shoppers' reactions were generally awestruck. The store appears to be much larger than before last April's disastrous fire, owing to a new traffic-flow design, and the shelves are stocked with fresh, clean items. Service, at least Friday morning, was cheerful and polite. The produce department is particularly impressive, fully stocked with fresh and organic greens." Also new at the store: higher prices.GMAP

'and the shelves are stocked with fresh, clean items."
clean items????
'Service, at least Friday morning, was cheerful and polite.'
Sounds like the cheerful and polite service is not expected to last.
Civil disobedience will break out in the aisles as Birkin toting, condescending Heights dwellers are rudely told by customer service which aisle the toilet paper is in.

Good to hear they've reopened. "Clean" and "fresh" are not two words I'd use ever to describe the old Gristedes - the browning, dried-out display of deli salads, the constantly malfunctioning freezers, the general grubbiness of the aisles and shelves, and that nasty slightly rotten smell that permeated the store....ah, good times. Add to that the surly checkout cashiers (only the manager could muster a smile now and then) and the place was ripe for renewal or closing down.
I hope the new and improved Gristede's stays that way. Nice to have a big grocery store option besides Key Food.

This place is still wildly overpriced. I'll make the extra effort to go to Trader Joes and Fairway.

Is it just me or is "Gristedes" a very unappetizing sounding name....
