New Restaurant for 230 Fifth Avenue

playa-1108.jpg Gowanus Lounge noted the new sign going up on 5th and President where Lookout Hill was most recently in residence; before that it was Biscuit, and before that Night & Day, if we're getting the chronology correct. Now, it shall be Playa, and we hope it fares better than its predecessors. That's all we know for now. Playa folks, send us some news!

Has anyone eaten at the Indian restaurant next door? Does *anyone* ever eat there? Maybe it's jinxing this space with it's empty vibe.

I nominate it for UN-restaurant of the Year.

I think Star of India does a decent take out business. The food is good and the people in the restaurant are very nice. I too am suprised it doesn't do better...

or Playa like playa hata?

When I read 'Playa', I put in a Shaggy CD. I'm now listening to 'Keep'n it Real'

Went to Star of India once about four years ago. It scored a solid "meh" so I haven't been back.

the little bar on the side, the one with the table in the middle with a big plastic pineapple, and the wave painting on the wall... seems like a fun place, im glad when i pass there to see people in there. i plan to stop in soon for a margarita or four. is playa the restaurant in the front part of the bar that is on the side on union street that im talking about!?

If they're competing with Star of India, I think their new motto should be,

"Don't hate the Playa, hate the Ghee!"

Posted by: Biff Champion at November 7, 2008 10:22 AM

Just hear the word 'Playa' again.
Shaggy is on a roll.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 7, 2008 10:25 AM

BRG...are you still drunk from celebrating your QOTD???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 7, 2008 10:28 AM

Yep....I'm giddy.
I was going to mention it, but wanted to stay modest.

And I'm listening to Shaggy. Gonna go put on my short shorts and glass pumps and start dancing.

Thanks Lisa for the Word of the day - Playa!

Playa is the restaurant that goes with the tiki bar around the corner. Owned/opened by the people that have Barrio up on 7th.

The reason you never see anyone in Star of India is because the interior has all the charm and ambience of a car service waiting room. I almost feel badly for them, but they could put a little effort into that place. Certainly they must be aware that people aren't attracted to restaurants that look like they were torn from a strip mall in Secaucus. They are nice people though, so I hope they figure it out. I have a feeling they'll need to make some hard decisions once Baluchi's opens.

I LOVE car service waiting rooms.

Hey ownhs, I just mentioned the tiki bar in the Jerry Minsky thread. What a co-inkidink.

Posted by: Biff Champion at November 7, 2008 10:55 AM

ownhs...you just shattered me.
What a disappointment...Playa, as in Beach.
Now, I'm hatin' on Playa.
Only one thing to do, Replay the Shaggy CD...and I'll be back to normal.

Why would someone go to a car service waiting room? Isn't the object to call the car and have it come and pick you up? Am I missing something?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 7, 2008 11:07 AM

where on 5th?

Posted by: troll at November 7, 2008 11:10 AM

"Why would someone go to a car service waiting room?"

For the fabulous coffee, friendly service and excitement in guessing the number of hours/days one will have to sit on an uncomfortable plastic chair with the smell of grease in the air waiting to pay $3,000 for a wheel alignment.

Playa is being opened by the same guy who opened Barrio and who opened Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side.

Considering Barrio's success, I have higher hopes for this place than any of the last few incarnations.

That guy knows how to run a restaurant.

Can they please open up a restaurant where Playas hang out. DIBS and I would be there nightly looking for our next meal.

It's going to be an island-themed fried fish joint. start the death watch.

Not much is more annoying than "meh". It speaks volumes about the person offering that as their opinion. "meh" - really?

Thank you ador3, for adding oh so much to this thread.

You score a solid "meh minus".
