H&M Setting Up Shop in Downtown BK
Somehow we missed this major retail news from Tuesday: H&M "has officially signed a 15-year lease at property owner Al Laboz’s 497 Fulton Street building on the Fulton Street Mall. The 29,600-square-foot store, between Hoyt and Bridge streets, will be H&M’s first street location Brooklyn," reports the Observer. Due to construction, it won't open until 2010.

15 year lease? lol. as if that horrible clothing chain store will last that long. (their clothes barely survive 15 washings!)

Old Navy's survivin'. Quality not much better.
Posted by: DOW8000SP800 at November 13, 2008 10:00 AM
The rendering seems to be missing about 43 cell phone stores and 26 hoochie mama clothes stores.
Posted by: jdoo at November 13, 2008 10:00 AM
I can't agree more with you PitBull but the hipsters and the masses love that shit. H&M and WalMart continue to do very well in this economy simply because everything is so cheaply priced. A flat screen bought from WalMart is not the same quality as one bought from BestBuy.
Brooklyn, as the epi-centre of hipster fashion (oxymoron?), is probably where H&M should have opened first. The store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan is the most profitable one in the chain. It also does a large portion of its sales to Euro-trash who come over and buy what they can get in their own country with cheaper dollars!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 10:01 AM
DIBS, now you're really letting your "i'm a contemptuous elitist" flag fly. to the extent you're even making an argument, it makes no sense. yes, pricing is one factor but just because it's cheaper doesn't mean the quality can't be equal or better. so, the quality of H&M stuff? yes, it's variable and you have to pay attention to what you're buying. but without doubt some of their stuff is miles better than most of the crap you find at old navy and the gap, better indeed than some of the junk at saks and the overpriced boutiques littering manhattan. don't be such a snob.
Posted by: i disagree at November 13, 2008 10:21 AM
i dont think he's being a snob at or all id come right out and say it. im the least snobby person ever. i wear rags from the salvation army, seriously. but their stuff is really cheaply made. i mean i guess it doesnt matter much since it's crap that goes out of fashion after 2 months anyway. another barf-worthy store: american apparel. i think that place is worse than h&m actually.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at November 13, 2008 10:25 AM
I went there once to buy something for someone. I'd never go back from the quality that I saw. My reaction was the same as PitBulls: That it wouldn't last very long. IMHO.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 10:26 AM
I love H&M!!!!!!!!!! And I am not a hipster.
Posted by: jwald at November 13, 2008 10:28 AM
I totally disagree about H&M. The styles are pretty current, and compared to Banana Republic, J. Crew, and Ann Taylor H&M is very affordable. H&M is nicer than Strawberry or Bolton's to my taste - a little hipper.
I bought my step-daughter an entire summer work wardrobe (some pieces were on sale for as low as $10) for what it would cost to buy 1 suit jacket at Ann Taylor. And she was thrilled, and so was I for the prices. My sister and I (in our 40s) shop there too, for work clothes and dress up clothes. I think it'll be great to have them nearby.
And just for the record, I like Old Navy too (more than the GAP). The clothes seem to hold up pretty well.
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 13, 2008 10:36 AM
"Drek" is the most appropriate term I can think of and I'm not even Jewish.
I just looked up the "same-store-sales" data for both H&M and WalMart. That's the most widely used bit of info to judge how a retailer is doing. WalMart is running SSS number +1-3% while H&M is seeing drops of 2-3%. Greater demand for Fruit of the Loom underwear than designer drek.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 10:38 AM
so, we've established that rob and DIBS agree with each other. like i said, the quality is variable but lots of it is decent and durable and most of it is well-priced. i've carefully selected a number of things there (some classic pieces, some trendy) over the years - most have held up and are still in my regular rotation.
Posted by: i disagree at November 13, 2008 10:39 AM
"DIBS, now you're really letting your "i'm a contemptuous elitist" flag fly."
An elitist in Bed Stuy. Now that's an oxymoron.
Posted by: DOW8000SP800 at November 13, 2008 10:41 AM
H&M is a huge step above Strawberry, Boltons and all the hoochie mama stores! I have fantasies about the Fulton Mall becoming a decent place to shop someday and have my fingers crossed that H&M will draw in the likes of similar chains and make the area comparative to lower broadway (but without the crowds). Trust me i'll be much more excited if Barney's Co-op or Anthropologie came to Downtown Brooklyn, but H&M is a decent start.
Posted by: columbiatch at November 13, 2008 10:42 AM
i disagree...I will have to go back and check it out again. Like I said, I was only there once and that was a long time ago. I'm 53 and wear suits with frech cuff shirts and wing tip shoes and jeans on the weekend. I'm not into anything designer or fashion except maybe an expensive tie. I'm certainly one here on brownstoner who always keeps an open mind :) :) :) LOL
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 10:44 AM
I totally agree with i_disagree - my step-daughter and I picked and chose carefully, and she'll have some of those pieces next summer too. for $10 for a skirt, show me a better deal.
My sister bought a great outfit that she wore to 3 different holiday parties last year. She looked like a million bucks.
And where exactly do you shop DIBS? I saw your suit that night at Union Hall - you're not shopping at Men's Warehouse. [Dow - if you saw Dave's suit, you might rethink that statement].
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 13, 2008 10:48 AM
As opposed to a "democratic elitist"??? LOL My elitist tastes run the gamut. You should come over and enjoy an armagnac in front of the fire in my parlour sitting in the high back armchair after dinner. You'd enjoy dinner this weekend too. Afterall, it is white truffle season!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 10:50 AM
I thought H&M coming to Fulton St mall was old news; I even have a vague recolletion of reading about it on Brownstoner. Is Fulton St the same as "Albee Square Mall", or are they one and the same? Clearly I am not up on the nomenclature, although I love shopping at Macy's in Brooklyn which is nearby.

Back on topic...
"Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Hennes & Mauritz AB, Europe's
second-largest clothing retailer, plans to open its first two Russian stores in Moscow in March as it seeks to capitalize on rising consumption in the country."
Two in Russia next year, one in Brooklyn in 2010!!!!! I guess that Russian taste for fine clothes beats out Brooklyn's.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 11:01 AM
H&M clothes are great for what they are -- cheap, fun, fashion-forward items. They are not meant as investment pieces and probably not to last more than one season (although I do have some items that have lasted years, since I bought them at H&M in Paris before they were even in NY), and for that they are perfect -- why would I spend $200 (or more) on a dress that I'm only going to wear a few times when I can get a pretty good (and not bad quality) copy for 1/4 that price?
I think most of the complainers here are guys, and men's fashion just isn't their key market anyway. And if this is anything like the H&M on 125th St it will be paradise for size 10 and under, unlike the other Manhattan stores, which seem to sell out of anything between 6 - 12 in one day.
Posted by: babs at November 13, 2008 11:06 AM
People have different tastes. Let's accept that. If H&M works for some and they like what they find there, then more power to them.
DIBS, the white truffle comment was hilarious. And yes, slopefarm knocked it out of the ballpark with his comment in derwood's Forum post. Quote of the Year. Period.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 13, 2008 11:07 AM
People have different budgets, let's accept that Biff.
No reason to knock H&M. Show me a place where I can make a 19/20 year old fashion-concious college student happy and give her a nice pile of clothes for under $200, and I'll happily shop there.
Anyone knocking H&M is clearly not shopping for a family on a budget.
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 13, 2008 11:15 AM
I have a few things I still wear from H&M from 5 years ago.
It's not my favorite store in the world, but if you need something inexpensive and current, it can be found there if you search.
I prefer finding vintage designer clothes at places like Beacon's Closet (which usually cost about the same as stuff from H&M) but everyone has a different style. Lots of woman I know (a couple are runway models) have tons of H&M stuff.
Posted by: 11217 at November 13, 2008 11:16 AM
H&M definetely serves it's purpose. Not everyone can afford or wants to spend a fortune on clothes. Stores like H&M and the discount stores are popular, because we live in a disposable society. If it's cheap, we don't feel as guilty buying it, using and tossing it sooner, than something we spent more on.
Personally, I'm not a fan of H&M, everytime I go in there, I feel old, but then again I'm not really into shopping....it bores me.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 13, 2008 11:25 AM
how is beacon's closet for guys clothes btw? i've been in there twice but it was such a clusterf-ck i left shortly after without getting to really look around. how are the prices? most vintage shops seriously seem to overprice..
there used to be a salvation army store right on prince street in manhattan around the corner from where i work and i would stop in there everyday on my lunch hour. loved it because it upped the chances to finding good stuff before the vintage betties from brooklyn and the village and their little vintage shops would come in and snatch up all the good stuff to resell ahhah.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at November 13, 2008 11:25 AM
Cobbler, maybe my post came off differently than I intended. I'm not knocking H&M in any way. And I wasn't putting down people who shop there (in a way that you may have interpreted as me implying such people have no taste and let's accept that). I meant that I wouldn't think any differently of someone who shopped there or bought a $10 pair of shoes at Payless than I would think of someone who spent $14,000 on a pair of Manolo Blahnik alligator boots. Ok, maybe I would think a bit differently, but it would be more along the lines of why people would spend $14,000 on a pair of boots!

11217...I guess you know "Lots of Luck" from the Lotto commercials if you know those supermodels!!! :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 11:29 AM
Rob,
I am a guy. I think Beacon's is great. Now, you can't go there thinking...today I'm going to buy 2 new outfits. You have to be into the hunt, and if I come out of there with one good thing, I consider it a success. Not long ago, I found a vintage Christian Dior sweater vest in perfect condition for 14 bucks. Stuff like that gets my adrenaline pumping. It gets a ton of compliments.
Sure it's overpriced for a vintage store, but what are you going to get for 14 bucks retail? Not even something on sale at H&M. That's the point. So yeah...I've spent 30 bucks for an item at Beacons Closet, but usually it's a piece of designer clothing, which probably cost a few hundred dollars new, so it's all relative.
More importantly, I just LIKE the older stuff. Retro is my style so it works for me. Like I said though...you have to be "into" thrift store shopping and like the thrill of the hunt...
The new one on 5th Avenue is now open till 9pm which is pretty awesome. It's double the size of the old one...I went on Sunday...

Ok, Biff, sorry, DIBS set me off. I know he's not shopping on a budget, and it burned me to hear people dissing it.
BRG, no I haven't been to Steve and Barry's. Frankly, I've been on such a tight budget for the past year and a half and I've pretty much stopped shopping altogether. And I never really was a 'shopper' to start with - I get that glazed-over-oxygen-deprived feeling in stores. I'll ask step-daughter (need a good online name for her! Mini-Half?) if she's tried them. Do they do gift cards? Maybe that would be an idea for her for Xmas? Hmmm....

Cobble...steve and Barry's...almost everything 9.98..I went there once last year to check out the SJP line. Really cute things. I bought a really cute dress, which I ended up giving to my sister.
I'm not a shopper either...I actually hate it. I think as a society we put too much emphasis on our outer image than our inner. And clothes play a big part of that. Sure I like to look nice and put together, but I don't obsess over it. I'm lucky in that I can work in my PJ's or if I go to an office, I can wear jeans and a Tee.

"I have midget jokes...how wants them?"
They are known as little person jokes and I'll take one to go please (take one joke to go, not take one little person to go).

"I think as a society we put too much emphasis on our outer image than our inner."
I think the opposite is true. Americans are by and large obese and extremely style-less. I agree that Americans are materialistic, but there is absolutely NO reason one can't pay attention to the outside AND inside. It's not an either or, and paying attention to your inside is usually reflected in a nice exterior.
I've been to countries MUCH less affluent than the U.S and people in other places take so much more pride in their appearance than they do here.
You don't need to like to shop, but not taking pride in your exterior is a sign that your interior is lacking as well.

BRG, I'm going to quiz Mini-Half on this - she's a little on the goth side - so if it's tooo cute she might not go for it. But she's definitely going girly-er lately.
I was raised wearing Sears and thrift store clothes. Twice a year we were allowed to pick stuff out of the catalog. You can imagine the 'free abuse' we got at school, etc. And we wore them until they were effing rags. I hate the consumer culture. But I like to look nice, and I can spend 'real' money on clothes from time to time. A great good pair of boots, a good coat...that kind of thing.
Ooooh, I wish I could work in my PJs!! [oozing pure-green-envy-from-my-cube-farm...]

That's true, DIBS. But as the organizer of the event, I feel I can at least divulge that I don't think 11217 will be disappointed by Rob's appearance (but I'm straight - so take that for what it's worth). And he's a very friendly and outgoing as well. Sheesh, between this recommendation and the fact I brought to 11217's attention the fact Rob's stated he prefers guys, I think I should be the best man at the wedding!

11217, I'll hold you to that. Actually, I'll let Rob hold you to that. And I also expect for this that you don't give me a hard time next time I try to organize a 'Stoner party. Deal?

Pitbull will be back in two and two...
Rob, if we had to pigeon hole you into a "style" what would you say. I seem to recall perhaps a hipster/skater dude (in a good way). Is that accurate?

DIBS!!!!!
'Trust me, the back of the hand is not the useful part unless you're trying to smack some potty mouth dame upside the head. :)'

Tell us where you're going on the date guys...maybe some of us and spy and report back.

Um, this thread is not about BRG and Biff; it's about Rob and 11217. So, can anyone think of a romantic first date for them? Where's Rob anyway? How many errands can he possibly have to do? Does anyone have any cool hold music while we're waiting?
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 13, 2008 1:14 PM
I already suggested Gorilla coffee since it's conveniently located to both...but I was ignored...sniff/sniff/boo/hoo.
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 13, 2008 1:17 PM
I suggest Pepperoncino on 5th Ave. If they are not interested in each other the waiters are really hot.

I don't know what do you guys do to get ready for a date.
You guys pick the dining establishemnt. I say before hand a walk through the Botanical Gardens....maybe they can glimpse some folliage.

From 11217's 11:31 post..."I am a guy. I think Beacon's is great. Now, you can't go there thinking...today I'm going to buy 2 new outfits."
I think he's out trying to buy a new outfit and has run into some trouble in making a selection

DIBS...so sorry. I meant no ill. It was supposed to be lighthearted, but maybe came across the wrong way. But in my defense, the language being flung around here, leaves one to ponder.
If it was dialogue between a man and a woman, It could also be equated to porn...and I think, if my memory services me correctly has been.

I haven't read through all these posts and won't because it seems to have descended into something useless and boring, but I'm responding to the comments earlier in the thread saying H&M is cheap and falls apart.
I've been sewing for 25 years and know people in fashion and can say H&M's clothing construction is not bad at all. It can differ from piece to piece and they do have some varying quality in their different price points but H&M clothes are better made than more expensive pieces from JCrew, Banana Republic and Gap. I can find skirts, jackets and pants that are lined at H&M but those other stores never bother to line anything even when it's a scratchy wool skirt or pant. Which is lame. H&M also provides extra buttons with their garments, sewn to inside tags and that's not so common with those other stores. As for how it holds up, I've owned and worn some H&M clothes for years. Fashion industry people and very wealthy fashion conscious people totally shop at H&M for clothes to fill in with their designer pieces. And do so because the quality is decent.

"Biff...I still carry around in my wallet a photograph that I clipped from the pages of national geographic 45 years ago."
DIBS, I thought only the female pygmies were nude in National Geographic. What interest would you have in a picture like that?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 3:10 PM
I'm glad to hear you say that traditionalmod. That's exactly how I've always thought of H&M as well.
I'm sorry about the boring part of this thread. But I did meet a very nice man here today, and we are emailing with one another as we speak. I know you might find it useless, but given that I'm not allowed to marry in 48 states, can you at least allow me a little nooky from time to time without all the hassle?\
j/k, Rob. I don't JUST want nookie, I respect you too much for that.

-A Virgo woman will tend to dominate a thread on an internet blog. She will inject snarky comments often misspelled and containing questionable grammar. When awarded the QOTD a Virgo woman will never, ever let you forget it. She will bring it into her love life, romanticizing the day it was awarded.

Why don't you flip through the pages of those magazines and get more corny cliches, or are the pages stuck together.

Oh I fell for Snark a long time ago, but I think Snark's taken, and so am I for that matter, so that was the end of that love affair, so now I just admire [batting eye-lashes] Snark and the snarky-ness from afar...sigh.

"He's cutting and pasting for sure..."
Ya damn right I'm cutting and pasting! I could barely think of Judy Garland, Elton John and Babs. DIBS, I got it from a Wikipedia page on gay icons.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 13, 2008 4:41 PM
Wait a minute here...now you want Snark, Rob?!
Good lord. And I thought we really had something here...

funniest thing i've heard all day! LMAO...I have only been to H&M a handful of times and i get overwhelmed by looking at so much 'stuff'. but i think i will be checking this place out, if i can always find my size and a cute shirt for work!

Rob, You need to study. I'm not gay and I know who all but 2 are. Love Top Model...even though Tyra's looking extra tranny-fied this season.
And where is Graham Norton??? Me and the hubby have him set on our DVR. Love, love.

Ok, at the risk of sounding (even more) like an incredibly uncool straight white guy, what on earth is a "fruitfly"?
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 13, 2008 4:50 PM
They're called fag hags, not fruitflies.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 13, 2008 4:51 PM
fruitflies were infesting my room the other day and a bunch of people here gave me advice on how to capture them. and it worked. oh you mean the other kind of fruitfly. a fruitfly is a chick who likes to hang around gay men. it's a less profane way of saying faghag.

I gymed quick today (it's right by work), you cheating lying bastard! And I thought you said you were leaving work?!
I hate you...and I hate your ass face!
You get a gold star if you can name the movie!
Oscar was a very wise man, BRG.
I love the term fruitfly. I can't wait to start using it.
Posted by: 11217 at November 13, 2008 4:54 PM
"fruitflies were infesting my room the other day"
Um...if we hit it off, can we go back to my place after, please...?

11217...you just cheapened this. You think, you can buy someone dinner a couple of drinks, talk about fruitflys and they owe you something.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 13, 2008 5:01 PM
I like it a little dirty Rob. It's ok...
Posted by: 11217 at November 13, 2008 5:01 PM
ahhahah dibs... no.. but it involved a drunk me, a stripper pole, and a bunch of lesbians egging me on to enter their gogo contest. (100 dollar prize i really wanted to win!!!).

Posted by: PitbullNYC at November 13, 2008 5:01 PM
BRG...I didn't mean it like that!
I meant that I prefer to stay clear of the fruitflies in my nice, clean apartment.
But it was a joke.
God, I hate Virgos!
;-)
Posted by: 11217 at November 13, 2008 5:02 PM
BRG...you can actually just hookup on a website, exchange photos, numbers and addresses and they'll come over the next day. it's pretty simple in our world. The bars, drinks, dinners are no longer necessary.

I'm much more romantic than that, Dave. I do like a little courting.
But that doesn't mean I won't have sex on a first date.
I'm old fashioned like that.

Dinner out is a must to keep it somewhat less sleazy.
