« Brooklyn Building Boom Healthier in 2008 than 2007 New Visions of 4th Avenue & 9th Street »

Goodnight, Ward, Goodnight
Sad news from No Land Grab: Ward Bakery, the white terra cotta building at Pacific and Vanderbilt, is no more. We'll never understand why Ratner didn't save this beauty to buy goodwill with the preservationist community. It's all the more tragic since its destruction is looking more and more in vain: Curbed predicts a parking lot.

Useless destruction, especially with the entire project up in the air.
I had never been right next to the building, until a couple of months ago, before demolition started again. The ceramic tile exterior was beatiful and unique and the entire building was worthy of saving.
We should have tried harder.

Total fu*king nightmare. Complete lack of municipal oversight. Did Ratner buy this property? Was eminent domain invoked for it?

Oh wait a minute. This is for improvement! When the Mutant Asset Bubble was wrecking havoc across Brooklyn the Asshats had no problem with this. Displacing families, Destroying buildings and driving hard working people from their neighborhoods.
And do you know what's great about this? There will be no Atlantic Yarads! Yep that puppy is DOA..
Boo Hoo...
The What
Someday this war is gnna end...

Lenny --
Ratner's never had to use eminent domain, just hold the threat of it over people's heads, so they bail. That's what happened early on with a lot of properties in the area -- for instance, every other condo in Daniel Goldstein's building.
In this instance, though, the property was owned by another developer -- I believe Boymelgreen -- who happily sold it to Ratner.
