Dismantling Astroland

Gowanus Lounge has photographic evidence of a dreaded and sad day at Coney Island: heavy construction equipment at Astroland, and workers dismantling the rides. Scattered along the site are industrial shipping containers. Are the rides going overseas? More discussion of the dismantling here.

I see how it is. Demolish a few historic homes and dozens of comments will flow in. Demolish an iconic Brooklyn landmark accessible to and appreciated by millions, and here at the end of the day I'm the only one commenting.

A travesty. Why does't anybody talk about Deno's next to Astroland? I haven't seen Deno's mentioned even once - except to point out that the Wonder Wheel (Deno's Wonder Wheel) won't be dismantled. I always thought Deno's was a better amusement park than Astroland - except for the Astroland rocket, which was cool. Does anybody know if Deno's will be around next year?

yes, of course Deno's Wonder Wheel, a city landmark, and Deno's park (games, arcades, kiddie rides, Spookarama) will be open next year. Also the Cyclone will be open, the kiddie park on the Bowery, the Coney sideshow, and many other attractions, sandwiched between Thor Equities empty lots.

Unless a miracle happens pretty soon Coney's largest amusement park will be one of those empty lots. Astroland's Break Dance, Dante's Inferno, Log Flume and other rides were more than the sum of their parts and will be greatly missed. it's shame the city does not step in and save the amusements from being destroyed by the mighty Thor
