Black Friday Becomes Brooklyn Friday

Yep, that's the plan hatched by Borough President Markowitz to get folks to do their holiday shopping close to home. Today, at that retail mecca the Fulton Mall, the Beep, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation and local Business Improvement Districts launch "Shop Brooklyn" (Gowanus Lounge has this, too). The idea is that tourists and locals alike will patronize our businesses, especially those selling made-in-BK wares. There will be some borough-wide discounts, and on Black Friday, the day after Turkey Day, there will be special bonuses (details to come, we hope). Those businesses participating will affix a “Shop Brooklyn” logo in their windows. Another way to shop Brooklyn? Hit The Flea this Sunday and every Sunday in December!

Is there a single "made-in-BK" ware to be found in any of the stores of Fulton Mall?

Not "made-in-Brooklyn," SnarkSlope, patronize Brooklyn retailers.

Sure, if you are in the market for a good wig and some hairspray.

i'll take a good wig and some hairspray over overpriced organic apples and ironic infant t-shirts ANYDAY.

It's a pedestrian mall. Not a shopping mall.

Sorry, Snark, and with all due respect to Lisa, but none of the information I have received directly from Borough Hall has mentioned 'made in Brooklyn.' Also, despite the kick-off on the Fulton Mall, this is a borough-wide initiative to the extent that retailers and business improvement districts buy into the idea.

Didn't there used to be a mall there, a long time ago? I swear I walked through it about 7 years ago and was amazed at the dump it was.
Incidentally, the outside mall has all the sneakers & pagers you could ever want in a 3 block radius.

This is a great idea. Shop in your borough and keep jobs alive. I know one of the owners of Cookie's (kids apparel) who has a store here and he's laid off many people. He's never seen it this bad and Cookie's has been around a LONG time.
