Touring Brooklyn on the Cheap

bondidwhat.jpg
The Daily News has found a way to stretch out your dollars in our ever-more-expensive borough, Got a hundred bucks to spend? They've laid out some sample itineraries so you can eat, shop, dance and then crash at a hotel (or hotel-like establishment) for one Ben Franklin. Here are a few: The Greenpoint YMCA will put you up for $70 a night, or spend just $29 at the Lafayette International Hostel, if you don't mind bunk beds (anybody slept here and wanna offer a review?). Have a full course meal at Brighton Beach's Gambrinus Seafood and Beer Bar for $30 or so, or visit the Harbor Defense Museum at Ft. Hamilton; admission is free. Anybody else got low-budget activities in Brooklyn to recommend?

A couple of my favorite things to do Brooklyn:

Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Saturdays 10:00am - Noon - Free Admsision
In life you have to stop and smell the roses.

Greenwood Cemetery
Drive In or Walk In (Be prepared for a strenuous hilly walk)
Get a map and look for notable New Yorkers final resting places.
Sit by one of the 'lakes' surrounded by gorgeous mausoleums eating pre-packed Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches.
Admission - Free
Sandwiches - Cost of Jiffy, Smuckers and Wonder Bread

BRG, you know, I did that very thing once at Greenwood, but I think it was a turkey sandwich!

I recommend stopping up at the top of the steep hill (through the front/main gate straight up hill and bear left) by the statue of Minerva, you will have a glorious view of the harbor, and the Statue of Liberty.

Not free, but nearly...

-$6.50 nights at Cobble Hill Cinemas on Tuesdays and Thursdays

-$5 admission all the time to the Transit Museum

How can I forget Minerva - on top of one of the highest points in Brooklyn.

Turkey Sandwiches, in these economic times??? Cobblehiller, you're living large. I'm sticking to PP&J

Lefferts House - Free
Lots of activities for kids.

Brooklyn Museum - Suggested Admission $8
(suggested means, pay what you want - if a buck is all you have, you will not be denied)

Transit Museum is great. I haven't been there in a couple of years.

BRG, I'll have you know I eat PBJ almost every day for lunch - how can a girl go wrong with a PBJ on multigrain!?! The turkey was back when I had the fancy job at the fancy law firm making fancy money. ; )

walk in to fairway and have a tea or coffee and sit by the water

Fancy Money = Turkey.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is fun and free. You can just go half way and come back.
Don't you dare step into that other borough.

Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum. Free! Which is even cheaper than pay-as-you-wish.

Take the B-63 bus all the way down to Bay Ridge/Ft Hamiton. Since it won the "Pokey Award" it should take you a few hours. Look out the window at the ever changing streetscape. Maybe jump off at Greenwood (mentioned above) or for cheap Mexican food in Sunset Park. If you ride it until the end the views in Fort Hamilton are great. Then shop at Century 21 and maybe have an egg cream at Hinsch's.
