Streetlevel: "Tiki Hut" Bar in Park Slope Open Today

cabana-bar-1008.jpg
Cabana Bar is described as a "Latin American beachside bar," replete with tiki hut bar, driftwood mirror, wave mural and snacks including Peruvian anticuchos skewers, spicy chile de arbol popcorn and oyster empanadas. It opens tonight at 648 President Street, at 5th Avenue. Here's a sample of their signature cocktails: Bonfire Bowl (tropical rum punch in a flaming bowl); fresh strawberry margarita; and the Montecristo, 12-year-old rum martini, shaken with Combier. Soon they'll have shuffleboard, limbo contests and ladies' night. GMAP

cool! will check it out this weekend

Posted by: troll at October 27, 2008 2:32 PM

Umm, limbo contests and ladies' night?

What is this, Daytona Beach?

Lame.

No wet T-shirt contest??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 2:38 PM

So far it does seem to just be the back part of the former Lookout Hill (on President, off the Avenue). I didn't go in, but it looked to me like it had the potential to be one of those rare, transporting kind of places. I hope it's good and not too overpriced. Maybe Brownstoner will revisit it after folks have a chance to try it?

My over/under that this survives is April 12, 2009 and I'm taking the under.

Can you spend an extra $5 and get your daquiri in a giant commemorative lime green or hot pink glass?

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 27, 2008 2:41 PM

Why April 12??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 2:45 PM

I can't imagine this space at all. The back of Lookout Hill? Where do you enter from? Seems odd...so what will go into the space of Lookout Hill if this is in the back?

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 2:45 PM

Excellent, I see Biff has launched the official deathwatch.

I'm guessing it's gone by March 28th.

Time to start the new betting pool: what will rise from the rum-soaked ashes to replace it?

DIBS, re: April 12 - I don't know, I thought 5 and a half months seems about right. The limbo thing really makes me question the judgement of the managers. Maybe it'll last longer, who knows? They could add fire dancing on Tuesday nights and free hair braiding on Wednesdays.

Looks very Key West to me. I say gay bar!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 3:03 PM

Maybe we'll all find our bottom here.

Sounds like a plan. Lisa can run to the bar all night long for us.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 3:45 PM

Enough of the limbo jokes, already. Can we try to raise the bar on this discussion?

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 27, 2008 3:48 PM

ha! took me a good minute to get that

The place has a glass roof. I give it until the first heating bill. First stretch of cloudy cold days and they'll be burning those benches to stay warm.

Posted by: jimdisc at October 27, 2008 3:57 PM

11217, By "back," I meant the completely separate space that looked almost like an addition to the old Lookout Hill space. You enter on President, btw. 5th and 4th Aves. I have no idea if they have also taken the actual Lookout Hill space.

Snakslope, I want in on the new pool. Since a crappy BBQ place (Lookout) replaced another crappy BBQ place (Bisquit), I am going to guess that another beach-themed restaurant will open after this one closes.

Look's more like a carribean style beach bar than a "Tiki Bar", But if it's got Flaming Rum Drink's not only will I check it out they might need to call the Police to get me to go home!

"Looks very Key West to me. I say gay bar!!!"

"But if it's got Flaming Rum Drink's not only will I check it out they might need to call the Police to get me to go home!"

[insert joke here]

[enter hot cop, stage left]

Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 27, 2008 4:31 PM

Scene 1, Take 12. Nightstick out, Officer Rodriguez.....

I inserted my own little fantasy in there by naming him Officer Rodriguez. Don't come down on me with lots of PC crap!!! :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 4:41 PM

looks like fun!

Posted by: AnneReal123 at October 27, 2008 5:03 PM

Does the G train stop nearby??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 5:06 PM

DIBS...you stole my fantasy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 27, 2008 5:20 PM

Maybe they'll give out Mardi Gras beads

"The limbo thing really makes me question the judgement of the managers."

The thing that really makes me question the judgement of the managers is the idea of opening a "tiki bar" just in time for winter. Have fun trying to offer the ambiance of a tropical escape when there is snow covering the glass roof and you get blasted by icy cold air everytime someone walks in the door.

Nothing makes you feel more tropical than a room full of people wearing thick sweaters, no?

All your whining made me curious, so I just spent the last hour + there and I must say...Cabana Bar ROCKS. The bartender, Carlos was totally on his game (and pouring lots of fun free shots) and the place is totally cool, yet totally cute. I recommend you all stop typing and check it out. I'm heading back on Friday for Halloween...it is about time 5th Avenue got a cool bar!!!

Posted by: oliverr at October 29, 2008 8:09 PM

Wow oliverr...first post and you come out swinging for Cabana Bar that "ROCKS" with "totally on his game" Carlos, the bartender? Plants like you make me want to stay away.
