Streetlevel: New Café on 8th Avenue

A tipster sent in this info about a new café on 8th Avenue and Prospect Avenue: "It's called Gialeti's Cafe, and promises fresh-baked pastries, paninis, and crepes." Should help fill the hole left by the closing of Café Eleven and Tea Lounge; the latter space remains vacant, by the way.

A realtor might describe it as "estate ready".

Isn't this the sort of grit that so many people profess to miss?

Hi,
Does anyone have an idea on the area of 16th St. and PPW, specifically 16th bet 8 Ave+ PPW? I'm looking to rent in the area (pvt home w basement and large yard) The area looks to be rapidly gentrifying and seems to have many great features (very close to Park, F train, etc.) Heard that a new Pub/Restaurant is opening shortly right on the corner of 16th and PPW (owners from Cake Shop in lower Manhattan). I am confident that the apartment and area have all that I want/need. I'm just trying to get an additional feel on the nabe. Thanks.

Hi,
Forgive me for redundancy as I have posted this in different areas with no luck and am hoping for a reply.Does anyone have an idea on the area of 16th St. and PPW, specifically 16th bet 8 Ave+ PPW? Hank,
I have lived here since August 2007, a few blocks south from the cross streets you mention. My cohabiting boyfriend feels very safe here, and likes the proximity to Park Slope with a smaller price tag, as well as having the benefit of PPW shops just around the corner. We both love the park, though the F train isn't always a reliable train.
As a female, I've been catcalled on my way home from the F more times than I care to remember, in ways that make me feel less admired and more threatened. However, I am a few blocks farther south than the area you mention, and the farther south you go, the less gentrified the nabe. In summary, if you're bringing a wife and kids, reconsider or get a third opinion; if you're alone, I think you'll be fine.
