BBQ Extinguished at Lookout Hill

Though it only opened in May, the BBQ joint Lookout Hill at 230 5th Avenue in Park Slope has turned off its smokers, according to a tipster. The space has seen quite a bit of turnover in the last few years, with Biscuit and Night and Day not lasting too long, either. Isn't this supposed to be restaurant row? N.B. See more coverage in today's Food Round-Up and on Eater.

My fiancee and I always went 'we should try that' when we walked by it, but we never did ... not sure why. Now it's too late, alas.
Apparently we weren't the only ones.

Food was horrible and the location is cursed - open a fish store and be done with it.

Went there twice for brunch. It was pretty good, better than Biscuit, which I grant you isn't saying much.
I still miss BBQ down at 6th and 20th.

I thought that Lookout was just Biscuit rebranded? Anyway I live right close and never went in.
I ate at Biscuit once for dinner and once for lunch (I like barbecue but they did not not enough healthy veggies on the menu to balance off all that meat).
I ate night and day maybe twice and liked the desserts but not much else.
Every time I walked by Lookout Hill looked like they were still working on it! Now it turns out they are closed.
I have already forgotten what was there before night and day... It had the clock on the cornice which the Night and Day people kept.

before lookout, biscuit & night and day, it was bibi's.
only one of those i ever tried was biscuit. and it was awful.
lookout's menu was suspiciously similar, so the previous comment thinking it was a 'rebranded' biscuit rings true to me.
5th Ave may be a restaurant row, but this place has a strange layout, a terrace that's too narrow to be usable & apparently, a curse!
A decent fish market, however, that would be awesome...

It's a Dead Zone.

There are too many restaurants on Fifth Avenue as it is.
Posted by: Polemicist at October 8, 2008 2:42 PM
If there are too many boutiques and too many restaurants, then what does Fifth Avenue need?
Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 8, 2008 2:46 PM
over there - 5th ave needs a large drug store, a fish monger, a good florist, a dry cleaner (yes I know hat spot was once a dry cleaner - so what), or a pizza parlor (slices)

We tried this restuarant as huge BBQ fans. The food was really bad. Served cold. No vibe at all in the place. I still think we could use another really good mexican restuarant in Park Slope. I can't really name on that is great. Marias=good food, terrible terrible service. Pyramide=Awesome food, way overpriced, terrible decor (But great food, great service). Santa Fe=consistently mediocre, but again, consistent.

It needs a good indian restaurant !!!!!!!!
Posted by: troll at October 8, 2008 2:58 PM
yes, good indian indeed. i totally agree.
Posted by: ks8000 at October 8, 2008 3:00 PM
I suspect the quality isnt too great but Balluchi's is opening at 5th and 2nd - so I dont think we'd get another Indian restaurant.

"If there are too many boutiques and too many restaurants, then what does Fifth Avenue need?"
A movie theater, a bowling alley, a video arcade, a cafe that stays open super late, GOOD Indian as someone said, another GOOD vintage/thrift store specializing in furniture, (Beacons Closet is moving from their current location across from here, 6 blocks north into a space twice the size on November 1, fyi), or a Beard Papa.

I also would really love to see a Kiehls open up in Park Slope.

2:26: I don't know about a "dead zone" ... that part of 5th Ave is very busy with the subway down the hill on 4th Ave. The location, however, is a bit cursed.
Anyway, their Bourbon menu will be sorely missed. Best Bourbon selection in Park Slope.

5th doesn't have too many restaurants, just too many of the same kind. if i see another bad sushi place open... (shaking fist)

How about a Asian Massage place - we need that!

I don't agree that a location can be "cursed"
Most said the same about the old Tempo Presto at 7th Avenue and 3rd Street and now Barrio is one of the most successful places in the neighborhood.
It has nothing to do with being cursed. It has to do with a quality operation and good food. This space has never had either, as far as I'm concerned.

Or a shoe store 11217.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 8, 2008 3:58 PM
of course a location can be cursed - in the sense that...due to things like traffic patterns, visibility, layout, and tons of other intangible factors...it doesnt work for a restaurant, or whatever.
Many times this can be overcome with amazing food, redesign, luck or a change in the outside factors but sometimes not.
I dont think anyone is using the term 'cursed; to indicate a mythical force preventing a restaurant from surviving - just that the location seems much more difficult than most to sustain a restaurant.

That really sucks! I liked this place the pulled meat by the pound were good. Plus an excellent choice of Bourbons. Too Bad!
Night&Day was terrible and so was Biscuit. Guess it is back to the Smoke Joint for BBQ.
I can tell you why they failed, they didn't deliver. I would have ordered for football games if they delivered.

A better bike shop. Those guys at R&A are first-class jerks. Also a pet specialty store (NOT Petco).

How about a combination gay bar / shoe store?
They can call it "Light in the Loafers."
[ducks]

The location is haunted by the spirit of Ralph, the dry cleaner...

nyc pet opened 3 doors down from this place recetly in the chinese takeout that went out. its funny on brownstoner they picked on 7th avenue south slope yesterday saying stores are turning over all the time. my take on it is stores all over brownstone brookln and DUMBO are going out all the time. in this economy only the strong will survive. i hope im one of them.

kosher style deli? it blows my mind that you can't get a katz's style hot pastrami sandwich, knish and dr. brown's black cherry in brownstone brooklyn ...
Posted by: EliDManheim at October 8, 2008 6:54 PM
It's turning into something called "Playa Cabana Bar" real soon... Maybe the Bourbon selection will be replaced with Tequila.
Posted by: Park_loper at October 8, 2008 10:55 PM
Park Loper....are you sure?
Posted by: troll at October 9, 2008 8:49 AM
The little white notice taped to the window says "Deliveries for Playa Cabana Bar please use side door" (or something very similar). I'm no Sherlock Holmes but it seems like damning evidence to me. We shall see!
