Rentals of the Day: The Standish Hits the Market

the-standish-10008.jpg
It's been common knowledge for several months now that The Standish Arms, the 78,000-square-foot building at 169 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights that the Watchtower Group sold to Taurus Investment Holdings in April 2007 for $50 million, would be marketed post-renovation as a rental property. Now more news on that front: Halstead will be doing the honors. The conversion reduced the number of units in the building from 128 to 94. Most of the units will range from 400-square-foot studios to 1,000-square-foot two-bedrooms with price ranges of $2,200 to $5,900. There will also be several "one of a kind" apartments that will be offered for $7,200 to $15,000.

"hey boss, i don't understand where we're supposed to build a kitchen in this unit."

"just put half of it against the wall at that end of the living room, and the other half at the opposite end."

"seriously? that seems ridiculous. not only will it look terrible, it's not even remotely functional."

"do i pay you to think?"

"fine, whatever you say, boss."

No kidding.

"And let's make sure to have a huge door that matches neither the cabinets nor the floor stuck in the center, too."

Also, paying $2200/month to rent a studio apartment is insane.

Especially in this difficult market, I can't even picture what a 15K rental could be?

A 5 BR penthouse triplex?

Posted by: Prodigal_Son at October 6, 2008 1:02 PM

Ha, so true. They'll need roller skates to make dinner.
Although if you move the side table to the other side, and move the love seat over a foot or so, you don't have to get up to reach into the refridgerator. Handy for important tv watching, and resting up after going back and forth in the "kitchen".

What stupid space planning.

I used to drool over this building when I lived in Brooklyn Heights back in the mid 90's. Too bad this didn't get converted when the market was stronger as its gorgeous.

Posted by: wasder at October 6, 2008 1:06 PM

It looks like the inside of a Marriot Extended Stay hotel room.

And I don't mean that as a compliment.

Whenever I see a fake ficus, I run for the hills.

Truly the most assinine layout I've ever seen

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 6, 2008 1:19 PM

wow that is one of the worst kitchens I have ever seen. To punish you more I bet the Refrigerator door swings towards the cabinet not the wall. I hate to say this, developers and real estate brokers that push this crap for top dollar should rot in hell.

Posted by: billyboomer at October 6, 2008 1:21 PM

i walk by here every morning and the desperation in the air is thick. but i suppose not desperate enough to come off of the $2200 studio price tag...

Posted by: travy at October 6, 2008 1:28 PM

Are they nutz? What's with these prices. These are CPW type rents

Posted by: PropJoe at October 6, 2008 1:29 PM

billyboomer...i think you're right. the refrigerator doors do swing the wrong way

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 6, 2008 1:29 PM

PropJoe...I agree the prices are a bit over the top, but to reference...I have two friends who live on Central Park West. One in a 4000 a month 1 bedroom and the other in a 3200 a month studio.

These are not CPW prices.

Listen, if you're getting a divorce and need a place to live asap, this is a lot better than the other residence hotels in the Heights or in Midtown. It looks clean, light, and un-infested.

Posted by: Inigo at October 6, 2008 1:32 PM

That broker, Rachelle is smoking hot. Anyone have her #?

Posted by: PropJoe at October 6, 2008 1:33 PM

I stopped in here on a whim to check the place out a few weeks ago, and I've got to say that those units don't look any better in person. The one-bed I saw had an additional weird detail--the bathroom floor was about five inches higher than the rest of the joint. They were asking $2700 for about 450 square feet on a lower floor with no view. Incredible.

My neighbor just last week rented his 5th floor walk up (500 sf) 1 bedroom in Park Slope for $2500. These prices are not out of line with the market, but the finishes and layouts sure are.

Posted by: 11217 at October 6, 2008 1:41 PM

Looks like a dorm room.
I want to see the 'special' apartment that's $15,000.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 6, 2008 2:27 PM

11217...

your neighbor got screwed.

Posted by: Santa at October 6, 2008 2:49 PM

This is bad, really, really, really bad! Seriously, what a P.O.S.!

You bend over to see what's in the bottom of the wrong way door opening fridge only to knock the lamp off the table with your rear end.

You separate the sofa and arm chair (which is placed within "splatter range" of the stove) with the dining room table. That's sure to be conducive to conversation.

11217 is dead on.

I'm glad I'm not the agent for these. I'd be embarrassed.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 6, 2008 3:00 PM

11217, damn, I gotta raise the rent on my tenants.

Posted by: FatLenny at October 6, 2008 3:28 PM

Santa, everyone in NYC gets screwed somehow...

Let's just hope that every once in a while it's the good kind...

Posted by: 11217 at October 6, 2008 3:32 PM

I read somewhere recently that Clak Kent was supposed to live in unit 5H of the Standish Arms Hotel. Do you think that that unit would see some sort of premium in the rent?

Posted by: Make My Heights the P Heights at October 6, 2008 3:50 PM

11217.

one can only hope.

Posted by: Santa at October 6, 2008 4:34 PM

I would rather live in Brooklyn Heights with an ugly kitchen than with chic German appliances on some desolate ice sheet in Williamsburg or Greenpoint.

Posted by: Inigo at October 6, 2008 8:01 PM

If those are the only options, yes I'd take the Heights also.

Luckily, there are quite a few other choices...

oh really? like where?
the @ schemerhorn? Some dump on the Gowanus canal? or a breeder's cup stable in Park Slope?
People with money like quality, that is why they like neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights. Stodgy, boring, and top dollar.

Posted by: sam at October 6, 2008 9:38 PM

who knows how the rental market will shake out, but there probably is still demand for a new apt in this neighborhood. rents are still extremely high. i am continually shocked at what my friends are paying who rent for worse.

Posted by: wine lover at October 6, 2008 10:23 PM

This place has been on the market for over a year with another broker, lets see what a change of broker will do to actually get these rented.

The Jehovah's sold it to an amateur company running it into the ground. Tenants move in and out like a homeless shelter and have turned Columbia Heights sidewalk into there private parking lot. The doorman is beyond rule and a male pig. The handyman is dumb/ pathetic and as smart as the company managing the building.

Posted by: zoppolhead at May 13, 2009 10:50 PM

This is the company owning / managing the building into the ground. They know nothing of running a large building. http://www.tiholdings.com/169ColumbiaHeightsCD133.html
