Nets' Move to BK Not a Slam Dunk

nets-sign-1008.jpgReports about delays to the Atlantic Yards project made the rounds yesterday, with news that the Nets' move to Brooklyn could be held off, some say indefinitely, though Ratner himself offers 2011 as a possible move-in date. Ratner wouldn't continue to have city support/approval to build an arena if a tenant isn't a sure thing.... right?

The part of me that's an NBA fan and would enjoy living within walking distance of an arena is saddened. But the much larger part of me that's disgusted by the government's detestable, should-be-illegal use of eminent domain in this case is thrilled. I don't love the idea of the existing Atlantic Yards continuing to be a blight for the foreseeable future, but my hope is that this will help lead to more sensible, neighborhood-appropriate development.

i think ultimately the entire project would have been a positive for the neighborhood and for brooklyn. they should have been more sensitive about the process and more modest with the scale. i think the most likely result will be either blight for at least 15 more years or an arena in 4 years surrounded by the rest of the blight for 20 more years. in my opinion as someone who lives within walking distance of the location, those are the two worst possible results. but i will take comfort in knowing that my kid's lungs will be mostly developed before construction dust fills there air.

Agree with cwbuecheler. I'm actually a big Nets and hate the Meadowlands but invoking eminent domain is outrageous for this area. And for what? So they can build that many more high-rise condos? Unbelievable.

invoking eminent domain is not outrageous for this area. it might not have been correct for some of the buildings in the area, but there certainly was and is blight in the area. whether that means the "area" itself is blighted is arguable, and the court is looking at whether the finding that it is was appropriately made. if the invocation of eminent domain was outrageous, the courts would already have decided in favor of DDDB. or perhaps you just disagree with eminent domain at all, which is a different argument.

Forcibly removing people from where they live under most circumstances can only be scummy in my opinion. No matter who they are.
