Nestling In at 110 Livingston
Who wants to pay top dollar to live near the Brooklyn House of Detention and the perpetual traffic jam approaching the Brooklyn Bridge? Lots of folks, in fact, and this week the NY Times' Habitat column checks in on a couple living in what they see as their oasis, at 110 Livingston St (after selling one of the condos in the old Board of Ed building). "The building has a courtyard where Rosalie can play with other children on nice afternoons. There is a well-equipped gym where Mr. Winters can fit in a quick run on the treadmill almost daily, which he considers a blessing," they write. "With views all the way to the distant F train on the elevated tracks over the Gowanus Canal, the apartment is filled with sunlight." Others must feel similarly. At least according to Streeteasy, there are no rentals or sales left.

Nice conversion - but isn't it like living in a hotel?

The secret to their success was pricing this development. I think these owners got a 2/2 for under 800k. Same Two Trees finishes as Dumbo, but for about 1/3 or more off. In retrospect, it was a smart move by the developers; I wouldn't want to be selling this location in this new market.

It is no more like living in a hotel than any large building in the city. While the immediate block is no great shakes, I don't think you could find a much more convenient location with regard to train access and proximity to three great neighborhoods.

If you read the article in the Times, its truly ridiculous and an example of lazy sensationalist reporting. It makes it sound like 110 Livingston is in the middle of the Fulton Mall, surrounded by 99 cent stores, not a block from Brooklyn Heights.

I couldn't agree more with very bored. The Times description of the surrounding area was much more bleak than where it actually is.

For most public school teachers of a certain pre-Bloomberg vintage, that building is full of horrors. It should have been blown up, like Giuliani suggested!

Yes, it's one block from Brooklyn Heights. It's also one block from Fulton Mall. So I wouldn't rush to go saying it's in the middle of plush brownstones either.
