Human Remains on Fort Greene Park

washington-park-1008.jpgBoth the Daily News and Newsday are reporting that human remains were found in a box on Washington Park last night. The medical examiner has not released details on gender, age or ethnicity yet. According to a tipster, the dog walkers in Fort Greene Park were "buzzing" about the news this morning. Bad news for this listing?

Brownstoner, I think you're fab, but reporting the discovery of human remains and then immediately asking what that will mean for a real estate listing is just not cool.

If it were THL, the movie would be "Rear Window" One of my all time favorites.

Must. Resist. Snarky. Rear. Comment.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 15, 2008 2:21 PM

I disagree, StuyMom. Let the truth be free. It's not good news, is it?

Posted by: DOW8000SP800 at October 15, 2008 2:21 PM

Yep, I think the last sentence is a bit off color.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 15, 2008 2:23 PM

Aww Snark, just say it...please?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 15, 2008 2:33 PM

in the morning, authorities realized that the box was actually filled with grapes, spaghetti, and jell-o.

Posted by: z at October 15, 2008 2:47 PM

Lets overpay for a browstone next to the projects then bitch because their are dead people in boxes across the street from my house.

Posted by: Xander Crews at October 15, 2008 3:05 PM

dead bodies in boxes is not a very projectsy (love that word!) thing though.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at October 15, 2008 3:12 PM

I can see dead people from my front porch.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 15, 2008 3:16 PM

You mean verandah.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 15, 2008 3:28 PM

Stoop in Brooklyn, front porch in Alaska.

'Lets overpay for a browstone next to the projects then bitch because their are dead people in boxes across the street from my house.'

This is the quote of the day for me.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 15, 2008 3:35 PM

Actually, that's probably one of the dumbest quotes ever.
People cut up in boxes is a regular occurrance in the projects?

"Gosh I sure do love my 2.5 million dollar brownstone but I wish those crazy project kids would stop slicing people and putting them in boxes in front of my stoop. Oh well... no use in complaining... it's just poor people acting like poor people!" (cue cheesy Mentos grin)

Posted by: TD at October 15, 2008 3:50 PM

I agree with Stuymom, I think it's kind of crass and insensitive. And as I pointed out many times when I lived in Park Slope, particularly after a murder in Prospect Park a few years back, we still live in the city and crime happens everywhere. Even in leafy green neighborhoods.

Posted by: Combustiblegirl2 at October 15, 2008 3:54 PM

Where was it found on Washington Park? I jogged right into the park from Willoughby Tuesday morning and didn't notice anything off. Bizarre.

Posted by: Shahn Andersen at October 15, 2008 4:07 PM

Yeah, it had nothing to do with the projects. I'm sure it was a well-to-do brownstone owner who got mad at his contractor for installilng recessed lighting.

Posted by: A Guest at October 15, 2008 4:08 PM

It's hardly a regular occurrance. This discovery made big news all over the city. If it were common it would not be news.

Don't you feel silly explaining the obvious? I do.

It sounds like you will HAVE dead people living in your house. Stay your arse outta the neighborhood. We don't need ya!

Posted by: The Who at October 15, 2008 4:25 PM

Maybe it did have to do with the projects, maybe not.

What's ridiculous was xander's suggestion that because one lives in the general vicinity of a housing project, one has no right to complain or voice concern when something bad happens.

Posted by: TD at October 15, 2008 4:25 PM

"dead people living in your house"

Thats a braintwister too.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 15, 2008 4:53 PM

I abhor housing projects, especially those known to be riddled with crime, but this isn't the type I would relate specifically to projects. This isn't petty thievery, muggings or drug dealing.

And I agree with TD, I live in Clinton Hill and I have every right to bitch about Housing Projects, I own my home, so in my not so humble opinion, I have a lot more say in the neighborhood than some freeloading project dwellers.
With the city about to start losing money due to rising housing costs and the flattening economy, it will be no time before they will start selling off housing projects in nicer neighborhoods. I can't wait.

Yes, I am callus but I don't care.

"This discovery made big news all over the city."

Really? Because it happened in front of my building, and i haven't been able to find any news about it today.

It was on Washington Park, near DeKalb. The cops got here around 10 Tuesday night and taped off a section of the block. Everyone in my building was questioned.

This is something that would be upsetting no matter where it happened and no matter how much I paid for rent.

You're a pretty clever callus if you can write.

I would suspect strongly that this has nothing to do with the projects, which aren't even that close to this location. The When you are as lame as the person whose name you are ripping off.

Posted by: wasder at October 15, 2008 5:07 PM

Read the beginning of my post Wasder, I agree that this crime has nothing to do with the projects (although I did do my venting about them after words).
And yes I may have ripped his name but am completely opposite of him. I am not ashamed to be a gentrifier or like the gentrification process going on.

Posted by: The When at October 15, 2008 5:18 PM

That's true, wasder. if this location is close to the projects, then basically all of brooklyn real estate is "close" to one project or another.

Posted by: TD at October 15, 2008 5:26 PM

I was making two different points, not stating that I thought you were saying this was projects related (point 1, not projects related, point 2 your stereotyping of residents of said projects is lame). You are correct that this doesn't sound like the typical crime report from the Walt Whitman homes. But you are grossly wrong to refer to "freeloading project dwellers." You must understand how ignorant and hateful that makes you sound. As a Clinton Hill resident, and a person fully in support of the gentrification of the neighborhood (in as much as that loaded word can be supported) I must take exception to your silly stereotyping. The reason why Clinton Hill and Fort Greene "work" as racially diverse neighborhoods is because, more than a lot of other parts of the city, these are neighborhoods where there are lots of genuine everyday interactions between people of differing economic strata and cultural/racial backgrounds. Out of hand dismissal of people who reside in public housing is propagating a negative stereotype that hurts the gentrification process.

Posted by: wasder at October 15, 2008 5:31 PM

Know who benefits most from gentrification, the auto glass repair shop.

Posted by: Xander Crews at October 15, 2008 5:39 PM

I'd love to see this as a "Law and Order, Ripped From the Headlines" episode!!!! Lots of shots of nice Brooklyn brownstones, etc. Maybe a scene with a group of citizens at Union Hall.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 15, 2008 5:41 PM

I just got off the phone with Quincy, he said he believes its, "Murrrderrrr"

Posted by: Xander Crews at October 15, 2008 6:00 PM

Wadser,

I do understand where you are coming from after your last post, and you do make a lot of sense. Yes the line was grossly stereotyping, but I have had it with the "Get out now or all y'all[sic] all will be dead" comments. I am tired of the crime that is perpetrated by some or perhaps many of the young people residing in the projects. I was at the Green Market on Saturday, which or course serves every different background of person in FG and CH, they had a poster board up to put a dot on of where you live, it was really interesting to see where there were no dots. The part of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill I enjoy has nothing and hopefully will not have anything to do with the North side of the park until it has changed.

Basically, I probably agree with a good deal of what you think (scary but true), but it has been proven time and time again, housing projects tend to breed excessive crime, and I don't think anyone should have to be subjected to it no matter where they choose to live.
