F. Martinella Finally Open

martinella-open-1008.jpgAs expected, the long-awaited opening of the F. Martinella delicatessen at the corner of Court and State in Brooklyn Heights opened on Monday. Blogger McBrooklyn notes the not-unexpected mix of offerings: "Lots of lunch meats (naturally), a variety of sandwich cheeses, cakes and cookies, coffee." Just hope they make enough to cover that $125 a foot rent!

I went there this morning and I find it to be disappointing. When it was being built the white subway tiles and the floor looked like it would be an old school deli. Now there are flat screens everywhere. They have a vintage Brooklyn picture in the back. It would be nicer if they scattered those around.

You order in one spot, via a girl at a computer, another person in front of another computer makes your sandwich and finally you pay at another spot. I paid 8 dollars and waited ten minutes to get a sandwich that was a plop of meat, crusty cheese and stale bread.

Corner bodega - you have Boars Head too and you are half the price? Here I come...

How does the $125/sq ft work out? Is it (2500 X 125)/12 for a monthly of $26K? Surely, I'm doing this wrong.

Oh man Prodigal....you and me both. That would have been sweet. Now the trek to Houston St continues for my corned beef and pastrami sandwiches.Hmmm....I am getting hungry just thinking about them.

I cant understand why boars head would open a store and call it martinella. Arnt they going into direct competition with the same people who helped build the brand up

FYI, I am making that my new place for deli meats & cheeses. They have pretty much all the Boar's Head varieties, and the cheese prices are roughly $2/lb cheaper than the [recently inflated] Key Food prices. So... better selection + lower prices = new customer (me). I have no idea how they will manage to stay in business there, though.
