Breaking: Shooting in Fort Greene

shooting-fulton-street-1008.jpgAccording to a tipster, there was a shooting a little while ago near the intersection of Fulton Street and Greene Avenue in Fort Greene. There are currently several police vehicles on the scene and the Fulton is shut down. If anyone's nearby, please send a photo and some more details. The shooting comes on the heels of the discovery of human remains around Fort Greene Park.
Update: 5 shot in a barbershop on Fulton, shooter possibly on the loose. Police advising people to stay inside.

Update: NYT Cityroom blog has the story here. Four people shot in the hair salon pictured below right; at least one dead.

Glad these things don't happen in Bed Stuy. Human remains?? Ugh.

maybe they didn't like the food at the new 7 greene place..

Posted by: ltjbukem73 at October 27, 2008 2:48 PM

um, what sort of pictures are you looking for, exactly?

Posted by: new2hood at October 27, 2008 2:49 PM

I think five people were shot in a barber shop on Fulton Street.
Multiple shootings, boxes of human remains, stock market meltdown, none of these things can be good for local real estate values.

Posted by: sam at October 27, 2008 2:50 PM

dunno, cops standing around, photo of how many police cars are there, that kind of thing...

Posted by: brownstoner at October 27, 2008 2:52 PM

In addition, Gothamist is saying that there has ALSO been multiple shootings at 91 Hanson Place. Jesus.

Five People Shot on Hanson Place in Fort Greene
Wire reports say that five people were just shot at 91 Hanson Place in the Fort Green neighborhood of Brooklyn. One witness described it as a "shoot-out"--this is just blocks from the Fulton Street G and Lafayette Avenue C subway stations and right by the Atlantic Center. http://www.brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2008/10/breaking_shooti.phphttp://www.brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2008/10/breaking_shooti.php that the cops are telling people to stay inside. Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have been experiencing a spike in crime recently.

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Five people have been shot, one fatally, at a barbershop in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.

The shootings occurred Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Police and EMS are on the scene at two locations located at 692 Fulton Street.

There are unconfirmed reports that an off-duty police officer was is among the wounded.

Ghetto Birds are circling Stuyvesant Heights.

Posted by: bryanx at October 27, 2008 2:55 PM

this is right outside my apt. cops won't let us leave yet. all taped off. rumor has it the shootings happened at DeLux Gallery, a new hair salon that just opened up on Fulton btwn S. Portland and S. Oxford (next to Cakeman Raven). That salon goes all the way through to 91 Hanson Pl which used to be the only entrance. Only until this week did they open up the storefront that faces Fulton.
Also heard it was a blue Tahoe and the guys also continued shooting further up on Fulton (toward Bed Stuy).

Posted by: tweekid at October 27, 2008 3:00 PM

My eighty year old neighbor Mrs. Jones would be out on her stoop and would never allow anything of the sort happen over here!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 3:01 PM

so there are two different shoot-outs with five people shot at each? this afternoon?

Posted by: Ringo at October 27, 2008 3:01 PM

101wins has an updated article that says it was the barbershop at 692 Fulton but they're investigating two locations:

Sounds like it's the same shooting...

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 3:03 PM

It's the same shooting, though the NYT has it as 704 Fulton St, not 692 Fulton St.

Posted by: Lothar of the Clinton Hill People at October 27, 2008 3:09 PM

I don't see any cops or body outlines in any of those pics. This is what's wrong with US journalism. If this were Europe or even more so, Latin America, we'd see all the gory stuff.

What about that dog that rescued those kittens from that burning house

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 3:18 PM

this is insanityyyyyyyy

Posted by: bklynbpr at October 27, 2008 3:20 PM

If this were Europe, guns would be outlawed, and hearing about a story like this would be extremely rare.

So sad.

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 3:20 PM

RRRIIIIGGGGHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTT 11217. It's be race riots in France, Mafia shootings in Italy, etc, etc, etc

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 3:28 PM

Somebody is dead. Maybe we can have a little respect and not choose right now to have policy debates, neighborhood trash talk and discussions on real estate values?

Posted by: Leo at October 27, 2008 3:31 PM

This is so sad. This is just a couple of blocks or so up from the State Office Bldg, On Hanson, the mall, BAM. On the Hanson side, the salon is across the street from a large church.

It sounds like, at this time of day, there must have been witnesses so they can nab these guys.

If I am correct, this was the 4W Circle of Arts that started lots of microbusinesses. No? They closed their doors because the rent went too high. It is too bad that rents go so high that only restaurants, bars and hair places can afford them. I have a feeling commercial rents are going to have to come down or these businesses will all be closing.

Sad.

Posted by: BrooklynGreene at October 27, 2008 3:34 PM

And it is right up from Tish's office...

I hope we can do something in the community about this tonight or in the next day or so. We need to speak out.

Posted by: BrooklynGreene at October 27, 2008 3:36 PM

Take a look at the murder rates in Europe and compare them to the U.S. and get back to me Dave.

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 3:37 PM

And remember that nice drycleaner in Park Slope... Terrible! It is so, so disheartening. Plus this stressed economy is putting extreme pressure on the most vulnerable communities. The economic problems have been impacting many communities of color for much longer and causing hardships, streses and trauma. Not that this crime is directly linked with the economy but frankly, a lot of this goes hand-in-hand.

Sad, sad, sad.

"Love it or leave it"

Dave,

How about "Love it and improve it" instead?

I grow weary of the best of all possible worlds fatalism.

Posted by: northsloperenter at October 27, 2008 3:51 PM

This is truly terrible, but I do not buy into the economy causing persons of color to commit crimes like this. Thousands of Wall Streeters and bank personnel have lost their jobs and are struggling with the possibility of losing their homes, but they haven't started shooting and robbing people. It is a cheap excuse to think that shooting five people has been influenced by the weak dollar.

Posted by: FGCHill at October 27, 2008 3:53 PM

I don't love this.

Posted by: Ringo at October 27, 2008 3:54 PM

I love America, but don't love violence and murder.

Your comment Dave is rather heartless, per usual.

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 3:57 PM

I don't think any of the stories has yet mentioned what color the shooter was FGCHill. And people think my "Love It or Leave It joke was irritating!!!!????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 4:02 PM

Well...some people after learning about a multiple shooting within our midst (and a murder) don't really find it an appropriate time to be making jokes.

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 4:04 PM

Dave,

Wait for it...........

I also was commenting (not attacking) on BooklynGreene's post where she mentions that:

"The economic problems have been impacting many communities of color for much longer and causing hardships, stresses and trauma."

Posted by: FGCHill at October 27, 2008 4:19 PM

Yes, we did find your comment about loving it or leaving it irritating. It's our country, too, and we're not going anywhere.

Posted by: JIPS at October 27, 2008 4:23 PM

It was about as irritating as 11217 pointing out that crime is lower in other countries. NYC has about the lowest crime rate of any major city in the U.S.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 4:27 PM

Does it seem like there has been a surge in violent crimes in this area lately?

And why on earth is that crackdealer and murderer "Ben" glorified on the recently restored mural on Myrtle Avenue? The ignorance of whoever painted it and whoever leaves candles beneath it pisses me off whenever I walk by it.

I honestly don't know if the benefits of living here outweigh the risks.

Posted by: brooklynfamily at October 27, 2008 4:31 PM

Dave, don't you have work to do in your hedge fund business? Yes? So shut the F up already.

Posted by: Leo at October 27, 2008 4:32 PM

11217 is right on this. Our guns laws are insane. Our crime rate is far too high, in every city.

I love America. I have never bought into the idea that to protest the status quo is somehow unpatriotic.

Posted by: Ringo at October 27, 2008 4:34 PM

Thanks for coming on and adding something Leo. 11217's comment about crime being lower in Europe was about as helpful as yours. If 11217 wants to cite the crime statistics throughout the major cities of Europe and debate the social policies behind them vs. what's going here then I welcome the discussion. But his remark, as it stands, and his implied conclusion is pithy. So I couldn' resist the "bumper sticker" mentality reply. Which all of you took the bait.

Even you Leo, as a lawyer , should be able to grasp that.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 4:36 PM

seriously dave, get to work! Based on your average of 40 posts per day (and thats conservative), id say you have more free time on your hands than a 9 yr old during the summertime...

Posted by: bktycoon at October 27, 2008 4:37 PM

There is no bright side to this, I am just relieved that there was only one Shooting today and not two as originally thought.

Posted by: FGCHill at October 27, 2008 4:42 PM

And I'm jst hoping that the shooter is actually caught without further bloodshed.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 4:44 PM

your first post on the topic:

Glad these things don't happen in Bed Stuy. Human remains?? Ugh.

Very nice, and very helpful.

I was working from home today, and my babysitter was giving my toddler lunch when we heard the gunshots. My little girl put her finger near her ear and said "shhh" "shhh" like she does when she hears a siren or loud noise.

Now I'm no crime alarmist, and I don't particularly worry for my family's personal safety on the basis of one or a few crimes. but it saddens me that my 20 month old daughter is subjected to that sound, when all I want is her to be innocent.

So pardon me for not appreciating your particular brand of stupidity.

Posted by: Leo at October 27, 2008 4:47 PM

Nothing was at all confirmed that there was anything of the sort initially Leo. Read the first 4 posts.

On the neighborhood issue that others have posted on, it does seem that this particular precinct has had more than its fair share of crime and I believe in other posts over the past 6 months or so that there's been an indication that the precinct is somewhat unresponsive to the "allegations."

BTW your first post was also "very nice and very helful" Pot=Kettle

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 4:53 PM

Sorry...second post. The one where you told me to "Shut the F up already." That type of post usually wins you a lot of credibility.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 5:03 PM

Hey DaveinBedsty, the stats for gun violence in the US are off the hook. Check out this passage from the Independent:

"In the US, there are roughly 17,000 murders a year, of which about 15,000 are committed with firearms. By contrast, Britain, Australia and Canada combined see fewer than 350 gun-related murders each year. And it's not just about murder. The non-gun-related suicide rate in the US is consistent with the rest of the developed world. Factor in firearms, and the rate is suddenly twice as high as the rest of the developed world."

Why not bring some sensible gun control to this country, to prevent the flow of cheap illegal handguns into the city, as our own Mayor has tried to do by closing loopholes and following through on interstate enforcement?

In any case, whatever you think about gun laws, "Love it or Leave it" is just a silly attitude.

Anyone ever seen Dave and Xander in the same room? I thought not...

Hope there's an update on this soon.

Posted by: spnder at October 27, 2008 5:10 PM

Not the biggest Fort Greene fan, but in it's defense, stuff like this is rare and when it does happen it happens all over. Wasn't there a hardcore shootout on the Upper East Side last year?

Posted by: A Guest at October 27, 2008 5:11 PM

"Anyone ever seen Dave and Xander in the same room?" Very creative spnder. Xander, or at least his blog persona is a racist. Highly likely that he's just trying to bait people anyway. I am not a racist but my Love It or Leave It comment was a snarky comment to a very open-ended comment and that was that. If you all can't grasp that then you need to chill out.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2008 5:19 PM

I'm sure crime rising has more to do with police force reductions. It seems to me that people who are laid off from jobs because of the economy are not the people who go around shooting each other - it's a different population - namely kids who are for the most part unemployable because of deplorable education and seriously deprived upbringing.

Posted by: gkw at October 27, 2008 5:31 PM

Yay...A story to give all the liberal racist on Brownstowner an excuse to mention the "Ghetto" and talk about how shitty Brooklyn Neighborhoods are.

Posted by: DizzyNYC at October 27, 2008 5:57 PM

I am far from a racist, I hate everyone equally, but it doesn't change the fact that Fort Greene sucks donkey balls.

Posted by: Xander Crews at October 27, 2008 6:02 PM

Some of these kids who are running around doing some of these sorts of things (albeit not usually as serious as murder) are partially this way because of the hopelessness they feel in living in a city where they know they will never be able to own a home or even pay rent unless they live 5 to a studio. We have created this new generation of hopeless high school graduate or high school dropout. Either way, a young kid fresh out of school or even fresh out of college can only afford to live with a bunch of other people with what wages are for these young people. How frustrating is that. Seriously, could anyone on here afford to live by themselves or even with another person in this entire city making McDonalds or bodega wages - typical jobs for young people? It's no surprise they feel totally helpless, hopeless, and turn to selling drugs, guns, robbing people, etc. The gentrification is/was good for older established folks, but there has to be a break for low and lower middle income people who stay in the city or else desperate people tend to do desperate things. Now that unemployment is on the rise and prices are going up and rents are totally exhorbitant, expect more to come.

Posted by: williamsburgguy at October 27, 2008 6:05 PM

Xander could be one of the most ridiculous people on the net these days. Man, you make Don Imus look like a Saint. By the way, calling this neighborhood a "ghetto" should be a million times more offensive to those who have made this their home for decades, than the newer folks. Xander if you don't live in Fort Greene get your nose out of a discussion about it. I don't ramble on about your apartment in the Farragut Houses. By the way, my neighbor wants his laptop back.

Williamsburgy, I think that the kids in Detroit, Butte, Merced and all the other godforsaken places in this country where there are no jobs or opportunities whatsoever may have a reason to complain. New York City? Not so much. There is affordable housing here, actually. There are decent schools. There is public transportation, there are unions. There's more than just the Walmart on the other side of the tracks to provide opportunities.

Stop being an apologist, you're not keeping it real.

The City Room post has been updated with further info. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/27/gunman-shoots-4-at-brooklyn-hair-salon/

Posted by: bifteck at October 27, 2008 6:59 PM

while we discuss the "hideousness" of granite kitchen counters and recessed lighting in our million dollar brownstones, we should not forget that Brooklyn is largely a city of poor people, some of whom are desperately poor. Many of whom are addleded by drugs and alcohol and some of whom are psychotic.
This ain't Darien, Conn. or Alpine, NJ. In many ways it is still the inner city of yore. It's just gotten a hell of a lot more expensive for newcomers to live here.
Like sex on a commercial flight, part of the appeal of living in Brooklyn was the danger and daring of it. That may wear off in hard times.

Posted by: sam at October 27, 2008 7:08 PM

Sam,

Give it a few years, your prediction is wrong. You cannot stop the Manhattan spread and Fort Greene is between Manhattan and Park Slope. Drug addicts and alcoholics will be swept away. I don't know ANYONE who moved here for "daring and danger".

Posted by: The When at October 27, 2008 7:24 PM

This is disturbing for many reasons 1. It happened in the middle of the day. 2. It was in a busy area 3. Innocent people were shot. My nanny and my child were walking around here when they heard gunshots and had to run away. They could have easily been caught in the gunfire.

Posted by: chnewbie at October 27, 2008 7:43 PM

does anyone known if they caught the shooter yet?

Posted by: Clintonhill7 at October 27, 2008 8:56 PM

I'm not being an apologist, and true we don't know the age of this particular shooter but someone made a remark about the kids/young folks and some of the criminal things they are doing, especially in areas such as FG where the young folks hear the old folks talking about gentrifiers. I work with schools in all 5 boroughs, more directly with schools and school administrators and this exact kind of research. True not all kids are bad, but many/most of the ones who do turn out "bad" can be attributed back to poverty at some point in their lives, and in our city you would truly be surprised at what income level poverty really begins - certainly not at a level that any young person out of school would make. Most likely no-one reading this entire blog knows anything about what its like to not be able to pay the rent here, or being forced to live 4-5 people in a tiny apartment - tenement style just to pay the monthly rent. So I am not asking anyone on here to feel sorry for anyone, but just making a point that when you start blaming delinquent kids for crime there is adequate research now in our city to show that the is a direct correlation to them or their families and the high housing prices/conditions, something that this blog has tried to make out that has done such great things for the city. The families being displaced are not actually leaving the city -for a lot of them they are just piling in with others and becoming increasingly more aggravated.

Posted by: williamsburgguy at October 27, 2008 9:48 PM

Williamsburgguy:

Your argument makes no sense.

Crime was OUT OF CONTROL when parts of Brooklyn were redlined and you could buy a brownstone for 1 dollar.

Now that homes cost more than they ever have, crime and murders are at an all time low.

Today's events are horrible, but your theory holds no water.

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2008 11:07 PM

williamsburgguy,

Stay in Williamsburg with your "White Guilt"

I have none, and I live in Fort Greene, not Williamsburg

Posted by: The When at October 27, 2008 11:11 PM

I was sitting across the street having lunch with friends at Habana outpost when this happened. Ethan Hawke and some film crew guys were sitting at the table near to us - I suppose they were filming nearby.

We were busy - distracted by our pseudo-star sighting - when we heard the shots and nobody at habana moved for a minute or two. I think it didn't register with anyone outside that they were real shots until we all saw people running. Then everyone bolted inside huddled behind a wall inside Habana. It was terrifying - we had a small child with us as well. I lived in FG for 6yrs before we got priced out when we were looking to buy. My current nabe (where I have heard gunfire several times) seems like a more likely candidate for this type of stuff than FG...so surreal.

I have heard about an increase in crime in FG. The discovery in the park, a story of someone being attacked for his iphone (jaw broken and teeth knocked out) on dekalb and vanderbilt at 9am taking his kid to school. I really love FG and still rent a workspace there. But there is clearly a rough side to it that still exists and probably always will.

Posted by: ppsboogie at October 27, 2008 11:19 PM

Williamsburguy, many of us have small apartments, crappy jobs, and have been disenfranchised. Anyways, if you're going to make that argument, you should probably move out of Williamsburg since you're obviously part of the "problem."

Posted by: Heather at October 28, 2008 12:44 AM

yep barely can afford my rent, live paycheck to paycheck, was living in harlem with 4 other people! (granted it was a 5 bedroom apt) just to make ends meet for a while (at 31 years old btw). i guess maybe that's not "piled" up. but i would never to think to rob or shoot someone for money or items. of course maybe i have been dealt more opportunities (barely) in life and since i do have an education (state school in jersey) it's still a lot better than what a lot of other people were able to get out of life. so maybe for some it might not be what they have "right now" but what they might be able to have at some point? tho for months now ive been feeling my future is pretty damn bleak myself. :(

Posted by: britt14 at October 28, 2008 6:07 PM

Theres no way this can be chalked up to the recession, or lack of jobs or any of that ridiculous reasoning. They weren't randomly shooting looking to rob someone, they had a target. It was an intentional murder where 4 other people got hit.

Thats why you should always pay your debts on time. In the words of one of the area's finest, "they gon' want their money rain, sleet, hail, snow". I guess now sunshine can be included in there.
